Why Take the Hydrofoil
The hydrofoil from Naples to Sorrento is the most scenic of all the options — 45 minutes crossing the Bay of Naples with Vesuvius rising on your left and the Sorrento peninsula opening ahead. It’s also the only sea crossing and therefore the only one that skips Naples traffic entirely. You board in the city centre (Molo Beverello, a 5-minute walk from the metro L1 Municipio station) and land at Sorrento Marina Piccola, 10 minutes’ walk from Piazza Tasso.
The tradeoff: it’s seasonal (April to mid-October typically), weather-dependent (cancelled when the sea is rough), and you still need to reach Molo Beverello from the airport.
2026 Timetable (Indicative)
Three operators run the route: Alilauro, NLG and SNAV. Schedules vary by month — more departures in July–August, fewer at the shoulders. Always verify on the operator’s website the week of travel.
| Naples Beverello → Sorrento | Operator | Duration |
|---|---|---|
| 09:00 | Alilauro | 45 min |
| 10:35 | NLG | 40 min |
| 12:30 | Alilauro | 45 min |
| 14:30 | NLG | 40 min |
| 16:00 | SNAV | 45 min |
| 17:15 | Alilauro | 45 min |
| 18:30 | NLG | 40 min |
Return from Sorrento to Naples follows roughly the same pattern. Last return typically 19:15 in peak season, earlier in shoulder months. Book online in advance during July and August — hydrofoils routinely sell out on weekends.
Tickets
- Online: alilauro.it, nlg.it, snav.it, or aggregators like ferryhopper.com. Book 1–7 days ahead in peak season.
- At the port: ticket booths at Molo Beverello for each operator. Lines are long in July and August.
- Price: €14–€18 for adults; children 4–12 approximately half price; luggage one standard piece free, €3–5 supplement for extra.
From Naples Airport to Molo Beverello
The airport and the port are 7 km apart; allow 30–40 minutes for the transfer:
- Alibus: €5, 25 minutes, direct bus from Terminal 1 arrivals to Molo Beverello. Runs every 20 minutes.
- Taxi: €23 fixed fare «tariffa predeterminata», 15–30 minutes depending on traffic.
Budget a 90-minute window between your flight landing and the hydrofoil departure. The Alibus + port queue + security check process can eat more time than expected.

Weather Cancellations
Hydrofoils run on «mare forza 3» (moderate sea) or calmer. When the forecast hits force 4+, services are cancelled or reduced. This happens:
- Occasionally in April and October (10–15% of days)
- Rarely in May, June, September (5% of days)
- Very rarely in July–August (2% of days)
Check alilauro.it in the morning if the forecast is poor. If cancelled, operators issue a full refund or date change. Your backup plan: Circumvesuviana train (75 min, €5), Curreri coach from airport (80 min, €10), or a private transfer (60 min, fixed price).
Arriving at Sorrento Marina Piccola
The hydrofoil docks at Marina Piccola, a small harbour on the east side of Sorrento. From here:
- To Piazza Tasso (town centre): 15-minute uphill walk via Via Luigi De Maio, or the small shuttle bus (€1.30), or a taxi (€10).
- To Marina Grande fishing village: 20-minute walk along the waterfront.
- Onward to Capri / Positano / Amalfi: same dock, different operator counters.
When the Hydrofoil Makes Sense
The sea route is ideal if:
- You’re already in central Naples (not at the airport)
- You enjoy the scenic approach to Sorrento from the water
- The weather forecast is calm
- You’re travelling light (one small suitcase or carry-on)
- It’s peak summer and you want to skip Naples traffic
It’s not the right choice if:
- You’re travelling November to March (service suspended or minimal)
- You have more than 2 large suitcases
- The sea forecast is rough
- You need a guaranteed arrival time (booking flights, cruise transfers)
