The Leonardo Express in Short
The Leonardo Express is Rome’s dedicated airport train — a non-stop shuttle between Fiumicino “Leonardo da Vinci” Airport and Roma Termini, the city’s central station. No intermediate stops, no seat reservations needed, departures every 15 minutes through the day. At €14 it is not the cheapest way into town, but it is the most predictable: 32 minutes platform to platform, immune to Rome’s traffic.
Luggage travels free — including large suitcases — and there is step-free access at both ends. It is run by Trenitalia, so tickets are sold through the Trenitalia app, website, machines and desks. Don’t confuse it with the FL1 regional line, which leaves from the same airport station but serves different Rome stations (more on that below).
Tickets: Where to Buy and How Much
- Price: €14 one-way, second class only. No advance booking needed — the ticket is valid for any departure within its validity window.
- Mini Group fare: 4 tickets bought together cost €40 instead of €56 — worth knowing for families and small groups (still compare with a private transfer for door-to-door value).
- Children: under 4 travel free; for every paying adult, one child aged 4–12 travels free as well.
- Where: Trenitalia app or trenitalia.com (QR code, no validation needed), self-service machines and ticket desks at the airport station and Termini, and authorised newsagents.
- Paper tickets must be validated in the green machines at the platform before boarding — unvalidated tickets risk a fine.
Tip: buy the return leg at the same time
Queues at the airport ticket machines can be long when several flights land together. Buying both directions in the app — or grabbing the return ticket while you’re at the machine — saves you the queue on the way back.

Finding the Train at Fiumicino
The railway station is inside the airport complex, a signposted walk from both Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 arrivals — follow the “Treni / Trains” icons. Allow 10–15 minutes from baggage reclaim to the platform, a bit more at peak times. The Leonardo Express has its own dedicated platform; departure boards clearly separate it from the FL1 regional trains, and the destination reads “Roma Termini”.
At Termini the train arrives at the dedicated Leonardo Express platforms at the far end of the station — allow about 10 minutes on foot from the train to the main concourse, taxi rank or metro.
The FL1 Alternative — €8, but Not to Termini
The FL1 regional line leaves from the same airport station and costs €8. It does not stop at Termini: it crosses Rome via Trastevere (about 31 minutes), Ostiense and Tiburtina (about 48 minutes), running every 15 minutes on weekdays and every 30 minutes on weekends and holidays.
If your accommodation is in Trastevere, Testaccio/Ostiense or near Tiburtina, the FL1 is genuinely the better train — cheaper than the Leonardo Express and it leaves you closer to your bed. If you are staying around Termini, Monti or the historic centre, stick with the Leonardo Express.
Taxi: the €55 Fixed Fare
Licensed Rome taxis (white cars) apply an official fixed fare of €55 from Fiumicino to any destination within the Aurelian Walls — which covers the historic centre, Termini, Monti, Trastevere and the Vatican area. The fare includes luggage and all supplements, for up to the vehicle’s licensed capacity. Other official fixed fares from FCO: Ostiense station €50, Tiburtina station €60, Ciampino Airport €55, Civitavecchia port €130 (source: Aeroporti di Roma).
Use only the official taxi ranks outside arrivals and ignore anyone offering rides inside the terminal. If your destination is outside the Aurelian Walls, the meter applies instead — ask for an estimate before setting off.
Rome’s airport is also served by several coach operators to Termini; they are the slowest option and schedules vary — the current list is on adr.it.
When the Train Isn’t the Right Choice
The Leonardo Express is ideal for solo travellers and couples with standard luggage, heading somewhere near Termini during the day. It is not the best option if:
- You land after 23:00 — by the time you clear baggage, the 23:27 last train is a gamble.
- Your flight arrives before 06:00 or you need the airport before 05:30.
- You are a group of 3–4+ with suitcases — door-to-door starts beating station-to-station on convenience and often on price per person.
- Your hotel is nowhere near Termini — add a taxi or metro leg (and stairs) to the €14.
- You are connecting to a cruise in Civitavecchia — see our Civitavecchia guide.
Door-to-door, any hour
A private transfer from Fiumicino to the centre of Rome books a driver who waits in arrivals with your name, tracks your flight if it’s late, and drives you to your hotel door — no queues, no platforms, no last-train anxiety. Fixed price confirmed at booking, day and night.
