Six sit inside ticketed reserves, one cannot be entered without a booking that was sold out a week ahead in high season, and for four of the most famous no official source will even tell you whether it is sand or pebbles.
There is no published public bus from Taormina to either base of Etna, so the day starts with a car, a driver or a tour. On paper a ticket takes you to 2,500 m on the south side, though whether the cable car is running that day needs a phone call; above that the mountain is a permission, not a purchase, and in August 2026 the summit craters are closed.
Two days cover Palermo’s Arab-Norman UNESCO monuments, one market at opening hour and the Capuchin Catacombs; a third adds Monreale, Mondello or Cefalù. The trap is not distance but opening hours — the Martorana is open three hours a day, and Palazzo Reale, being the seat of the Sicilian Parliament, can close without notice.
Taormina fits into one day, but almost everyone runs it in the wrong order and reaches the Corso at the busiest hour of it. Teatro Antico at nine, the free sites before lunch, the cable car down to the sea after — with every price and opening time taken from the operators that set them.
