The honest starting point: on this route the bus is good
Siracusa is one of the destinations where I do not try to talk anyone out of the public bus. This is not a tourist shuttle with a tourist price: it is a regional line, operated by Interbus S.p.A. as line IN01 on the long Portopalo–Pachino–Siracusa–Catania–Palermo route, that calls at the airport on the way. For Wednesday 12 August 2026, a summer weekday, the operator's own booking system listed 36 departures from the airport to Siracusa, all Interbus, no change anywhere (checked 11 August 2026, booking.interbus.it).
The scheduled running time is 70 minutes — every departure I checked carried exactly the same figure, and even the overnight 00:10 run is timetabled at 69. That is what the schedule promises, not what August traffic guarantees: leave margin if you have somewhere to be.
Finding the stop is simple because there is only one, registered in the Sicilian regional stop database as "AEROPORTO CATANIA – Terminal Arrivi", code CT_14 — at the arrivals terminal itself (official Interbus stop list, checked 11 August 2026 via booking.interbus.it). No shuttle, no second terminal, no remote bay.
The Interbus timetable, and its two gaps
On a weekday the first daytime departure from Catania Airport to Siracusa is at 07:10 and the last at 23:10, with one further departure at 00:10 overnight. In between, the frequency is genuinely good:
- 09:10 to 12:10: a bus every 15 minutes
- 12:10 to 20:10: a bus every 30 minutes
- Late evening: hourly, at 21:10, 22:10 and 23:10
At weekends the service thins rather than collapsing: for Saturday 16 August 2026 the same system returned 34 departures instead of 36, with the last evening bus at 22:10 instead of 23:10 (checked 11 August 2026, booking.interbus.it). If you land on a Saturday evening, that hour matters.
Two gaps matter. First: after the 00:10 run there is nothing until 07:10 — a seven-hour hole covering exactly the arrivals low-cost airlines like to schedule. Second, a gap in the information: the timetable system returns no service-calendar note for the 00:10, so I cannot tell you whether it runs every night of the year or only on selected dates. If your plan depends on it, check your date on booking.interbus.it and have a plan B.
What the ticket costs
The Interbus one-way fare from Catania Airport to Siracusa is €6.20 ("Corsa semplice"), and the web fare is exactly the same €6.20 — no online discount, no penalty for buying at a desk. The return ("Andata/Ritorno") costs €9.60, which works out at €4.80 a leg (fares checked 11 August 2026 in the official Interbus fare table via booking.interbus.it).
Two consequences. Flying home from Catania? Buy the return at the same time: €2.80 saved per person and no counter queue on the way back. And this fare is why the bus wins so often here — four one-way tickets come to €24.80. Any honest comparison with a private car starts from that number.
Buying it: Interbus wants the ticket before you reach the stop
This part catches people. Interbus asks passengers to buy the ticket before going to the stop — the channels it lists officially are its website interbus.it, the Interbus app, and authorised ticket offices (Interbus, "Dove acquistare", checked 11 August 2026). Payment on board is not among the listed channels and the site does not say whether it is accepted — do not land assuming you can tap your way onto the bus.
There is an Interbus ticket office inside the airport: SEIM S.r.l., Piazzale Terminal Arrivi, tel. +39 348 3921803 (same source, same date). The simplest routine: buy in the app at baggage reclaim, walk out, get on.
Luggage: a free allowance smaller than most check-in cases
Interbus carries one item of hand luggage plus one hold bag free of charge. The hold bag must be no larger than 50x40x25 cm and no heavier than 20 kg; a small musical instrument or a folded pushchair may travel in addition (Interbus, "Bagagli", checked 11 August 2026).
Those dimensions are the biggest reason this article is not simply "take the bus". A 50x40x25 cm box is a cabin-sized case; the large suitcase most people check in for a week in Sicily exceeds it in at least one dimension. Interbus publishes no excess-baggage fee — ask at the SEIM office before you join the queue at the stop.
Two rules are absolute. Bicycles travel only dismantled into two pieces and bagged. Electric scooters and other battery-powered transport devices are not accepted at all — not folded, not with the battery removed.
Where the bus leaves you in Siracusa, and how far Ortigia really is
The line terminates at the Corso Umberto 196 bus terminal (regional stop code SR_1435), after eight other stops inside Siracusa: Scala Greca 394, Scala Greca 240, Viale Teracati 184, Viale Tica 170, Viale Tica 141, Via Von Platen, Corso Gelone (Parco Archeologico) and Corso Gelone 50, the last one two minutes before the terminus (stop sequence checked 11 August 2026 via booking.interbus.it).
Staying near the archaeological park? Get off at Corso Gelone (Parco Archeologico) rather than riding to the end and walking back; likewise along Viale Tica or Viale Teracati. The terminus is right only for Ortigia and the station area.
For Ortigia, from the terminal it is about 1.25 km, roughly 15 minutes on foot, to the Ponte Umbertino, the bridge onto the island, and about 1.76 km, roughly 22 minutes, to Piazza Duomo (pedestrian routing on OpenStreetMap data from the official stop coordinates, checked 11 August 2026). Those are figures for walking normally, not dragging two cases through an August afternoon.
The stop names mislead: I could not verify any stop on this line inside Ortigia. The closest-sounding ones are on Corso Gelone, on the mainland side, roughly as far from the bridge as the terminus. Plan the last stretch on foot or by local taxi.
Comparing with the train: Siracusa railway station and the Corso Umberto terminal are about 200 metres apart, and the station is about 1.4 km from the Ponte Umbertino (same OpenStreetMap routing, checked 11 August 2026) — the bus wins by a couple of minutes' walk, no more.
The train, and the ticket trap that costs you the shuttle
Catania airport has its own railway station, Catania Aeroporto Fontanarossa, which the airport operator says is reachable on foot via a pedestrian path of about 600 metres; an AMTS shuttle also links terminal and station every 10 minutes from 04:30 to 22:40 (aeroporto.catania.it, checked 11 August 2026). The airport lists the shuttle at €1.00 while the combined rail ticket implies slightly more — when two official sources disagree, call it about a euro.
From that station there are 12 direct trains a day to Siracusa, no change, at €8.80, taking between 58 minutes and 1h22; first at 06:11, last at 22:28 (checked 11 August 2026 for Wednesday 12 August 2026 on lefrecce.it). At its best the train beats the bus. At its worst it is slower — and there are 12 of them against 36 buses.
Now the trap. A Trenitalia ticket to the destination "Catania Aeroporto Fontanarossa" does not include the airport shuttle. For the combined ticket you must select "Catania Aeroporto Fontanarossa Bus", priced from the terminal itself: €10.20 to Siracusa, Fontanarossa Airlink shuttle and regional train included (both checked 11 August 2026 on lefrecce.it). Buy the wrong one and you are at the terminal holding a ticket that starts at a station you have not reached.
On the 600-metre walk, the airport publishes the distance and nothing else — nothing on signage, steps or how it works with big cases at night. If in doubt, take the shuttle while it runs.
The unglamorous summary: from the terminal the train costs €10.20 against €6.20, runs 12 times against 36, adds a transfer, and lands you about 200 metres further from Ortigia. It wins when your train is a fast one and the timing fits your flight. Otherwise, the bus.
Going via Catania Centrale instead
The third route is into Catania first, then train. The airport link is the AMTS Alibus: €4, also valid on all other AMT urban lines for 90 minutes, with 60 departures a day from 04:40 to 00:30 and — unusually for Sicily — the same timetable on weekdays, Sundays and holidays. Between 08:00 and 20:00 it leaves every 18 minutes, and AMTS states every run passes Catania Stazione Centrale 15 minutes after leaving the airport (amts.ct.it/alibus and the AMTS Alibus timetable, both checked 11 August 2026).
One warning that costs people a fine: ordinary AMT tickets are not valid on Alibus — 90-minute tickets, day tickets, special and reserved tickets, FCE tickets and ordinary season passes are all explicitly excluded. You need the Alibus ticket itself, sold on board in cash or by card, in the AMT Catania app, at the season-ticket office, AMT resellers and affiliated hotels.
From Catania Centrale, direct regional trains to Siracusa cost €8.80 and take 1h10–1h30; the Intercity costs €10.50 (checked 11 August 2026 on lefrecce.it). That is €12.80 across two vehicles against €6.20 direct. It makes sense for one reason only: a few hours in Catania on the way — see our Catania destination page for what to do with them. As a route to Siracusa, it is the worst of the three.
Taxis at Catania airport
The taxi ranks are at the exit of the arrivals level. Official Comune di Catania taxis are white, with a "TAXI" sign on the roof and a licence number on the doors, and the airport's own advice is to ask the fare before boarding. Notice what is missing: a price. The airport publishes no tariff for Siracusa — none exists to quote. A taxi here is a fare negotiated at the kerb, after a flight, with no published reference to argue against. When you do not need a private transfer
Most people reading this page should take the Interbus. Specifically, take the bus if all of the following are true:
- You land on a weekday between roughly 07:10 and 23:10 — or at a weekend before 22:10 — with time to spare after baggage reclaim.
- There are one or two of you, with luggage that fits the free allowance.
- You are staying in Ortigia, near the station, or along the Corso Gelone / Viale Tica axis the bus already passes.
- Fifteen to twenty-two minutes on foot at the far end is not a problem for you or your bags.
In that scenario the bus costs €6.20, takes 70 minutes, runs up to four times an hour mid-morning, and drops you marginally closer to Ortigia than the train would. A private car gains you little you will notice — spend the money on dinner in Ortigia instead. The same holds in reverse: leaving mid-morning, turn up at the terminal and you will be on a bus within a quarter of an hour.
When a private transfer actually earns its place
The bus is good, but it does not solve every problem. The cases I see most often on this route:
- You land in the gap. Between 00:10 and 07:10 there is no direct bus, and the 00:10 has no published service calendar. A car booked in advance does not depend on luck.
- Weekend late arrivals. On Saturday and Sunday the last bus is 22:10. A 21:50 landing on a Saturday is a gamble on the baggage belt.
- Early flights out. The times verified here are airport-to-Siracusa; the Siracusa-to-airport leg has its own timetable, so check the first return departure for your date on booking.interbus.it — if it does not reach the airport with the margin your airline demands, a booked car leaves when you need it to.
- Family luggage. The free allowance is one cabin-sized hold bag per person, with no published excess fee. Four people with four large cases are outside the published rules.
- Bikes and e-scooters. A bike must be dismantled into two pieces in a bag; battery-powered scooters are refused outright.
- Your flight is late. A driver tracks the flight and waits. A 23:10 bus does not.
- Your address is not on the line. The bus serves nine stops in Siracusa. Staying outside that corridor leaves you a second leg to organise at the worst moment.
On price: the private transfer from Catania Airport to Siracusa is quoted as a fixed price for your vehicle, date and passenger count, confirmed when you book — not a meter, not a kerbside negotiation. What it is not, and what I will not pretend it is, is cheaper than €6.20.
How much time to allow after landing
The sequence: buy the ticket in the Interbus app while you wait at baggage reclaim, with the SEIM office in arrivals as the fallback; walk out — the stop is at the terminal. Then read the clock against the timetable, not against your optimism.
The window that ruins holidays is the last hour of service. Landing at 22:30 on a weekday and aiming for the 23:10 gives you forty minutes to clear the aircraft, collect bags and have a ticket — usually fine, occasionally not, and "occasionally not" means a seven-hour wait or an unquoted taxi. On Saturday, the same arithmetic an hour earlier. Scheduled near that edge? Book the car and stop thinking about it.
For the way home: the times here were checked in the airport-to-Siracusa direction, so check the return timetable for your date on booking.interbus.it, then add the margin your airline demands plus the walk from Ortigia to the Corso Umberto terminal.
What I could not verify, and where to check it
Some things are simply not published. At the time of writing:
- No taxi tariff to Siracusa is published by the airport — its own advice is to agree the fare before you board.
- No excess-baggage fee is published by Interbus, only the free allowance. Ask at the SEIM office.
- Payment on board is not listed among the official purchase channels — assume you need a ticket in advance.
- Left-luggage facilities at the Corso Umberto terminal or Siracusa station are not published anywhere official I could find.
- The 00:10 night departure carries no service-calendar note — verify your date on booking.interbus.it.
- The 600-metre airport footpath to Fontanarossa station is published as a distance and nothing more.
Everything else was checked on 11 August 2026 against the official sources linked above. Sicilian timetables change with the season and the school calendar; check your own date before you rely on any of them.
