The Coach Is the Default, and It Is Genuinely Good
Most people who land at Catania Fontanarossa and sleep in Taormina take the coach, and for most of them that is the right call. One vehicle from the airport to the town — no change, no connection to miss — €7.00 one way, €14.00 return, 80 to 90 minutes, most runs scheduled at 85. Nothing else here is that simple for that money.
One thing confuses people at the stop: the service is sold by two companies of the same group, and both line names are written from the Taormina end. Etna Trasporti runs it as line ET07, «TAORMINA – CATANIA – APT FONTANAROSSA»; Interbus runs it as line IN14, «TAORMINA – CATANIA – SIRACUSA – PORTOPALO». Same road, same fare, same stop. On a mid-August weekday Etna Trasporti operates 29 of the 44 departures and Interbus the other 15, so whichever livery pulls in first is your coach.
The run is direct — one vehicle — but not non-stop. A typical morning run leaves the airport at 07:15, calls at Catania’s Via Archimede coach station at 07:30, Viale della Libertà 182 at 07:32 and Piazza Michelangelo at 07:40, then Taormina Capotaormina at 08:35 and Tombe Bizantine at 08:38, arriving at Taormina Terminal Bus at 08:40. Those city stops are why the first 25 minutes feel slow: you are still in Catania.
Timetable: 44 Departures in August, 23 in November
Frequency is the coach’s strongest argument in summer and its weakest in winter.
Mid-August weekday, airport to Taormina: 44 departures. The first leaves the airport at 07:15 and reaches Taormina at 08:40; the last leaves at 22:45 and arrives at 00:10. Departures run roughly every 15 minutes through the morning and every 30 minutes from early afternoon. In high season you do not plan around the timetable: clear the terminal, walk to the stop, wait a few minutes.
Mid-November weekday, same route: the operators’ booking system shows 23 departures instead of 44. The first is still 07:15, but the last one leaves at 19:45, not 22:45. That is a three-hour cliff edge, and it catches out people who read a summer blog post in October. Landing in the evening outside high season? Check your actual date in the operator’s system before assuming there is a coach.
The same asymmetry applies in the other direction. On a mid-August weekday there are also 44 departures from Taormina Terminal Bus to the airport: the first leaves at 06:15 and reaches the airport at 07:40, the last leaves at 22:45 and arrives at 00:10. If your flight home boards before about 08:30, the first coach does not get you there in time — that is a hard limit, not a matter of hurrying.

Tickets: €7.00, and Buy Before You Reach the Stop
The fare is identical whichever of the two companies you travel with: €7.00 for a single («Corsa semplice») and €14.00 for a return («Andata/Ritorno»). The web fare («Corsa semplice Web») is also €7.00: buying online costs nothing extra, so there is no reason to queue at a desk.
Both operators tell passengers to buy before reaching the stop — the instruction on their site is explicit: «Ricorda di acquistare il tuo biglietto prima di recarti in fermata». The three channels they publish are the operator website, the Interbus / Etna Trasporti app, and authorised ticket offices («biglietterie abilitate»). Neither company states on its public pages whether you can buy from the driver, or at what cost. Do not gamble on it after a long flight: buy in the app while you wait for your bag, and the question disappears.
Etna Trasporti also sells a weekly airport pass on this route, the «Turistico settimanale APT», at €39.20. Do the arithmetic first: at €7.00 a leg it only pays for itself from the sixth single journey, so it suits repeat commuters, not a couple making one return trip.
Finding the Coach at the Airport — and Where It Leaves You in Taormina
At Catania Fontanarossa the stop is registered in the Sicilian regional stop database as «AEROPORTO CATANIA – Terminal Arrivi» (stop code CT_14) — the Arrivals side of the terminal. The official record names no numbered bay, so allow a couple of minutes outside Arrivals and confirm the line (ET07 or IN14) with the driver.
In Taormina the coach terminates at «TAORMINA – Via Pirandello – Terminal Bus» (regional stop code ME_1228). This matters more than it sounds: the terminal is up in the town itself, not down on the coast — which is exactly what the train does not do. From there you continue on foot, so check your hotel’s position on a map first: Taormina’s side streets are stairs as often as they are streets.
Two stops before the terminus the coach calls at Capotaormina and Tombe Bizantine. If you are staying down towards the sea, ask the driver — getting off early can save you a walk back downhill.
The Train: Two Ways to Do It, and One Trap
Catania Airport has its own railway station, Catania Aeroporto Fontanarossa, which the airport operator says is reachable on foot from the terminal along a pedestrian path of about 600 metres. An AMTS shuttle also links terminal and station every 10 minutes, from 04:30 to 22:40, for €1.00.
Option A — straight from the airport station. Direct regional trains run from Catania Aeroporto Fontanarossa to Taormina-Giardini for €6.50, in 49 minutes to 1h14. Sold as a combined shuttle+train ticket from «CATANIA AEROPORTO FONTANAROSSA BUS» the total is €7.90 — €6.50 of train plus €1.40 of shuttle. Here is the trap, and the airport itself flags it: a Trenitalia ticket bought to «Catania Aeroporto Fontanarossa» without the word «Bus» does not include the shuttle. Two nearly identical station names, one of which leaves you paying twice or walking the 600 metres with your luggage.
The airport quotes €1.00 for the standalone shuttle while Trenitalia prices the bus leg of its integrated ticket at €1.40 — two official figures for two different products, worth a glance at the machine.
Option B — via Catania Centrale. The AMTS Alibus links the airport to Catania Centrale station. The ticket is €4.00, valid 90 minutes on Alibus and on all other AMT urban lines, and can be bought on board in cash or by card, on the AMT Catania app, at AMT resellers and the subscription office, and at affiliated hotels. It runs from 04:40 to 00:30, the same timetable on weekdays and Sundays, and AMTS states that on every run Catania Centrale is reached 15 minutes after departure from the airport. Buses leave from the forecourt in front of the old terminal building. From Catania Centrale, direct regional trains to Taormina-Giardini cost €5.50 and take 36 minutes to 1h08; the Intercity costs €8.50 and takes 36 to 41 minutes. Direct trains run from 05:01 to 21:20, roughly every 30 to 60 minutes, plus a late Intercity Notte at 22:33.
And now the real problem with the train. Taormina-Giardini station is not in Taormina. It sits down at sea level in Giardini Naxos — the operators’ own stop database lists it as «GIARDINI NAXOS – Stazione FS» with the note «Stazione FS Taormina», about 1.3 km in a straight line from Taormina Terminal Bus. In a straight line, because the town centre is 204 metres above sea level (ISTAT altimetric data, zone «Collina Litoranea»). That is the whole story: you do not walk up with suitcases.
The climb is covered by the same Interbus / Etna Trasporti local buses, and the service is dense: 104 runs a day from Taormina-Giardini station to Taormina Terminal Bus, 5 to 15 minutes, €1.10 one way and €1.70 return, from 06:05 in the morning until 23:45, with a handful of night runs after midnight. So the train is perfectly workable — it is just three vehicles and roughly €9.00 (€7.90 + €1.10) against one vehicle and €7.00 for the coach. Taxi: What Is Published, and What Is Not
This is where most pages online make something up, so let us be precise about what exists.
At Catania Airport the taxi ranks are at the exit of the Arrivals level. Authorised taxis licensed by the Comune di Catania are white, marked «TAXI» on the roof, and carry a licence number on the doors, at the rear and inside the vehicle. The airport warns in writing that any other vehicle waiting at the exit may be driven by someone without a licence, and may charge a fare that is higher than — or simply different from — the one set by the Comune di Catania.
The airport itself publishes no taxi fare. It says only that fares are those set by the Comune di Catania, and advises asking staff about the applicable fare before boarding. The fixed fares approved by the Comune di Catania, in force from 1 July 2026, cover only journeys inside Catania: Piazza Duomo to the airport and Stazione Centrale to the airport, both at €27.00. The meter rates are €4.00 flagfall, €1.60 per kilometre, €7.00 minimum fare and €26.00 per hour of waiting (tariff resolution as reported by Balarm).
There is no fixed municipal fare for Taormina, which is in a different province altogether. Beyond the Catania municipal boundary the rule is stated plainly by the local radio taxi service: «Oltre il confine di territorio Comunale le tariffe per il trasporto vengono concordate tra le parti» — fares beyond the city boundary are agreed between the parties. Any number you see quoted online as «the taxi fare to Taormina» is one company’s commercial quote, not an official tariff. If you take a taxi, agree the total in advance, out loud, before the bags go in the boot.
When a Private Transfer Earns Its Keep
We sell private transfers and we are not going to pretend the €7.00 coach does not exist. It does, and in August it leaves every 15 minutes. A car with a driver is worth the difference in a specific set of situations:
- You land outside coach hours. Last departure is 22:45 in mid-August and 19:45 in mid-November. A delayed evening flight can put you on the wrong side of that line with nothing scheduled left.
- You fly out early. The first coach from Taormina reaches the airport at 07:40. For a 07:00 check-in that is not a tight connection, it is no connection.
- You are three or more. Four coach singles are €28.00 and you still arrive at Via Pirandello with the bags; door to door for the same group changes the arithmetic and eliminates the walk.
- Luggage. Neither operator publishes a luggage allowance for this route, so you find out at the hold door. With a buggy, golf clubs or four large cases, book a vehicle sized for them.
- Small children. Toddlers plus an uphill walk at the end of a travel day is the combination people most often regret.
- Your hotel is not near Via Pirandello. Taormina spreads over hairpins between the sea and the 204-metre ridge. The coach terminal is one point; your door is another.
- The flight is late. A booked driver monitors the arrival; waiting time, and what happens if a delay pushes your pickup into night hours, are set out in the booking conditions rather than negotiated at the kerb. A coach simply leaves on schedule, and a rank does not care.

The one thing to read before you book is the booking conditions: waiting time, and a delay that moves your pickup into night hours, are settled there in writing — not improvised when the car door opens.
When You Do Not Need a Private Transfer
Plenty of people reading this should just take the coach. Book nothing, spend €7.00, and put the difference towards dinner.
Take the coach if you are one or two people with normal luggage, landing between mid-morning and mid-evening in season, staying somewhere you can reach on foot from Via Pirandello. The frequency in summer means you barely wait, the fare is a rounding error on a Sicilian holiday, and the road up from the coast is genuinely a good introduction to where you have just arrived.
Take the train if you are heading to Giardini Naxos rather than up to Taormina, or if you are continuing north along the coast the same day. The station is right there at sea level, which is a disadvantage for Taormina and an advantage for the beach towns.
Take Alibus and the train if you are stopping in Catania first — lunch, the fish market, an afternoon before heading north. Paying €4.00 to reach Catania Centrale and picking up a train later beats a transfer that sits parked while you wander the city.
Going Back: Taormina to Catania Airport
Do not assume the return mirrors the arrival: the hours differ. On a mid-August weekday there are 44 coaches from Taormina Terminal Bus to the airport: first at 06:15, arriving 07:40; last at 22:45, arriving 00:10. Scheduled journey time is again 80 to 90 minutes.
Build in a margin. The coach shares the coast road and the Catania city stops with everyone else, and 85 minutes is a timetable, not a promise: taking a departure two earlier than the one that theoretically works costs you nothing but a coffee at the airport. For anything boarding before roughly 08:30, or for off-season evenings when the last coach has gone by 19:45, book a car the day before rather than improvising at the terminal.
