What this journey actually is
This is not an airport transfer in the usual sense. It is a crossing of Sicily, north coast to south, and the distance depends on who is measuring: the Comune di Palma di Montechiaro puts Palermo Falcone e Borsellino at 180 km from the town along the SS189, while routing the trip on the real road network with OSRM gives about 208 km and roughly 2 h 53 min of driving. Both checked 12 August 2026, and no official source reconciles them: budget around three hours behind the wheel. (The same page puts Comiso at 94 km and Catania Fontanarossa at 160 km, both closer than Palermo, if the flights are not booked yet.)
Mandranova is not a mapped locality: it does not come up on OpenStreetMap or Nominatim, and no official, municipal or cartographic source we could find publishes its coordinates (checked 12 August 2026). That is the whole reason this page exists. Reaching Agrigento, and then Palma di Montechiaro, is a solved problem with a published fare and timetable; the last stretch to the gate is where plans break.
Leg one: the SAL coach from the airport to Agrigento
There is a direct coach from the terminal to Agrigento, and it is genuinely good: Autolinee SAL's Porto Empedocle – Agrigento – Palermo Punta Raisi line, €12.30 one way per person, 2 h 55 min according to the operator's own sales system, no intermediate stops.
Two caveats. The airport's page declares that run as 2 h 40 min while SAL sells it as 2 h 55 min — fifteen minutes, which matters if you are cutting a connection fine. And the airport page says tickets are bought on board while the SAL site also sells them online: buy online if it lets you, and carry cash as a fallback. The stop is easy to walk past — at ground level, Arrivals Hall, bus stops for all destinations on your right.
Weekday departures from the airport (verified for Thursday 20 August 2026): 08:30, 10:45, 12:15, 15:30, 17:30, 19:30 — into Agrigento at 11:25, 13:40, 15:10, 18:25, 20:25 and 22:25. On Sunday four run (verified for 23 August 2026): 08:30, 12:15, 15:30, 19:30; the 10:45 and 17:30 do not.
Hence the first hard constraint: first coach 08:30, last coach 19:30. Land at 21:15 on a cheap evening flight and there is no direct bus to Agrigento that day on the timetables we checked.

Leg two: Agrigento to Palma di Montechiaro
The airport coach terminates at Piazzale Rosselli, Agrigento's bus terminal — the same forecourt the Palma coach leaves from. That second leg costs €3.10, takes 30 minutes, and sets you down at Via Luigi Pirandello 47, in the town itself.
Monday to Saturday there are twelve departures (verified for 20 and 22 August 2026): 06:30, 06:45, 07:30, 08:00, 08:45, 10:30, 11:30, 13:30, 14:30, 15:30, 17:00, 19:15. For a rural route, a decent service.
On Sunday there is nothing. Not a reduced timetable: the official search for Sunday 23 August 2026 returns zero departures between Agrigento and Palma di Montechiaro. The airport coach still runs on Sundays and will deliver you to Piazzale Rosselli, where you stay until Monday morning. It is the most expensive mistake available on this route.
One more detail shapes the end of your journey. These coaches stop at exactly five places: Agrigento Piazzale Rosselli, Villaggio Mosè (Viale Sciascia 177), Palma di Montechiaro (Via L. Pirandello 47), Licata (Piazzale Martiri delle Foibe) and Gela (Piazza Stazione). Between Palma and Licata there is no stop at all: the coach runs the SS115 through open country and does not open its doors. Anywhere along that stretch is off the bus network, and asking the driver does not create a stop the route does not have.

The connections that work, and the two arrivals that strand you
Put the two timetables side by side and the trip stops being theoretical. The weekday pairings at Piazzale Rosselli are these:
- Airport 08:30 → Agrigento 11:25, next Palma coach 11:30. Five minutes: treat it as missed, because a coach that has just crossed the island is not one you bet on. Realistically, 13:30.
- Airport 10:45 → Agrigento 13:40, connecting to 14:30. Fifty minutes: the comfortable one.
- Airport 12:15 → Agrigento 15:10, connecting to 15:30. Twenty minutes, same forecourt, workable if nothing slips.
- Airport 15:30 → Agrigento 18:25, connecting to 19:15, the last Palma coach of the day.
- Airport 17:30 → Agrigento 20:25, and 19:30 → 22:25. Nothing left either time: you are staying in Agrigento.
The rule, then: on a weekday, be through baggage reclaim in time for the 15:30 coach at the latest. Anything later reaches Agrigento and no further. On the twenty-minute connection, remember the fifteen-minute gap between the airport's declared duration and SAL's — that is most of your margin.
An unplanned night in Agrigento is no punishment, with the Valley of the Temples there — we cover that road in the Palermo to Agrigento guide — but it is still a night you did not budget for.
The last stretch, which is the real problem
Here the timetables run out. The coach sets you down at Via Luigi Pirandello 47, in the middle of Palma di Montechiaro. How far Mandranova is from that stop, and in which direction, we cannot tell you from any official source: it is not mapped as a locality and nobody publishes its coordinates. Between the bus stop and the gate there is no published service we could verify on 12 August 2026 — no timetable, no fare — and we will not invent one to fill the gap.
So, the most useful line on this page: settle the last stretch before you book the flights, not after. Ask the estate directly how guests arriving without a car reach the gate, whether they collect from the bus stop in Palma di Montechiaro or from Agrigento, and up to what hour. Get it in writing. If you need your own wheels, you want to know while the flight is still refundable.
What not to do is improvise on the ground: a small town, late afternoon, luggage, a lift needed to an address no timetable covers, in August heat. Trivial with a phone call three weeks earlier; awkward at 19:45 on a Saturday.
Why the train is not on this list
A big island with a rail network ought to have a train from Palermo to Agrigento. On paper it does; on the day we checked, it does not. Search Palermo Centrale to Agrigento Centrale on the Trenitalia planner and every solution comes back flagged treno effettuato con bus — operated by coach. Train 5434, for instance, runs as bus PA792: 3 h 23 min, €11.40. From Palermo Airport the planner returns 4 h 29 min to 5 h 05 min for €15.90, again largely by road: more money than the direct SAL coach, an hour and a half more time, and a bus anyway. We did not find, on the planner itself, a notice setting out the cause of the substitution or the date it ends — our Palermo to Agrigento guide follows the works notices published for that line — so check both for your own dates.
Down the coast it is worse. Palma has no station: the Comune names Agrigento (25 km) and Licata (20 km) as its reference stations. Licata's station is active but effectively cut off — trains reach it only from Canicattì, three times a day, and from Agrigento Centrale there is a single rail solution routed through Caltanissetta Centrale taking 5 h 09 min. There is no coastal railway between the two: here the coach is not the poor relation, it is the network. One consolation if you do reach Agrigento by rail from elsewhere — OpenStreetMap coordinates put the station about 370 metres from the Piazzale Rosselli bus terminal, a short walk rather than a taxi.
Going through Palermo city: Cuffaro and the long way round
Search for buses from Palermo to Agrigento and the first name you meet is Autoservizi Cuffaro, the historic operator on that corridor: cheaper than SAL at €8.60 one way, €13.70 return valid 30 days, about two hours, and on weekdays far more frequent — 05:45, 08:15, 09:15, 10:30, 12:00, 13:30, 14:00, 14:45, 15:30, 17:00, 18:00, 19:00. Saturdays drop to nine runs, Sundays and public holidays to five (08:15, 12:00, 15:30, 17:00, 19:30).
The catch is where it starts. Cuffaro does not serve the airport: its Palermo terminus is Piazzetta Cairoli, beside the Stazione Centrale, about an hour of city transport from where you will be standing with your suitcase.
Two ways to cover that hour. Prestia e Comande links the airport and Palermo Stazione Centrale every 30 minutes, in 50 minutes, all year including holidays. Read the timetable carefully: the operator publishes a single service window for the line, 05:05 to 01:05, without saying which of those is the first and last run from the airport — so if you are landing late, confirm the departure you need rather than assuming one at 01:05. Buy online, in the app, at the airport or Terminal Fazello ticket offices, or on board, where it is cash or contactless card only. Children aged 0 to 2 travel free, and the fare is not printed publicly, so check it in the channel you buy from. Or take the train: the airport station is on the basement level of the terminal, open daily, and Palermo Centrale costs €6.80 for about 1 h 02 min, first departure 05:18.
Add it up: an hour to Palermo Centrale, a wait, two hours to Agrigento, another wait, thirty minutes to Palma. You save a few euros and spend most of a day. Worth it only if your flight lands outside the SAL window and you wanted a night in Palermo anyway.

The ATA coach the Comune lists, and how to check it
One more service is worth a phone call. The Comune di Palma di Montechiaro publishes a direct Palermo – Palma di Montechiaro link operated by ATA srl, telephone 0922 29692: four runs a day, leaving Palermo at 10:30, 14:00, 16:00 and 18:00, into Palma at 12:50, 16:20, 18:20 and 20:20; back from Palma at 04:50, 06:50, 10:20 and 14:50.
If it runs, and if it stops where you need it, that removes the change at Agrigento — on this route, the whole game. But be careful: the Comune's page says "from Palermo" without stating that the coach calls at the airport, and we could not confirm any of it against the carrier's own published material on 12 August 2026. Municipal pages outlive the services they describe. Treat those times as a lead, not a plan: ring the number and ask whether the service still runs, whether it operates on your day, and where exactly it picks up.
Taxi from Palermo airport: what the fixed fares cover
The rank is at the exit of the Arrivals area, and the airport publishes fixed fares: €39 to Viale Michelangelo or Viale Lazio, €44 to Corso Calatafimi or Corso Vittorio Emanuele, €50 to the Stazione Centrale or Brancaccio, plus a shared taxi at €10 per passenger once four have gathered. All city fares. Nothing published covers a 200 km run into the province of Agrigento, so the price is whatever is agreed at the kerb by a driver pricing in a long empty return — settle the total out loud before any luggage goes in the boot. When you do not need a private transfer
We sell private transfers, and would rather be straight than sell you one you do not need. Take the SAL coaches and keep the difference if all of this is true:
- You are not travelling on a Sunday, since the Sunday gap between Agrigento and Palma is absolute. We verified the airport departures on a Thursday and a Sunday, and the Palma leg on a Thursday and a Saturday: for any other day, run the search yourself.
- You are one or two people with hand luggage or one case each. €15.40 a head to cross Sicily is not a close contest against any car.
- Your flight lands in time for the 12:15 or 15:30 coach — realistically, with baggage reclaim, not on the scheduled arrival.
- The estate has confirmed it can collect you in Palma di Montechiaro or Agrigento, at the hour you would actually arrive.
- You are hiring a car anyway, since once you are off the coach network a car is not a luxury.
The public-transport version of this trip costs less than a restaurant dinner. If that is you, buy the SAL tickets and go read about the rest of the island.
When a car with a driver earns its place
The honest case is narrower than the marketing claims, and it is about the calendar and the load, not the distance:
- You arrive on a Sunday, when there is no second leg and the coach leaves you in Agrigento with a night to fill.
- You land after 19:30 or before 08:30, when the direct coach does not exist, or after about 16:00 on a weekday, when the last Palma departure has gone at 19:15.
- You are three or more with luggage, or travelling with children, a pushchair or a car seat. Multiply €15.40 by four, add two coaches, a wait and an unsolved last stretch, and it stops being about money.
- Your flight tends to run late. The pickup is planned on your real arrival time; the 15:30 coach leaves at 15:30 regardless.
- The last stretch is unresolved. One vehicle from the terminal to the gate removes the part of this journey no timetable covers.
A private transfer from Palermo Airport to Mandranova gives you a driver in arrivals with your name, one vehicle to the door, and a fixed price per vehicle confirmed before you pay — no meter, no fare invented at the kerb, no connection to miss. What it does not give you is a better deal than €15.40 on a coach.
Getting back to the airport
Plan the return separately: it is not a mirror of the outward trip. SAL leaves Agrigento for Palermo airport at 02:20, 06:20, 08:35, 10:50, 13:10 and 15:20, again 2 h 55 min and €12.30. The last useful departure is 15:20, into the airport at 18:15.
Work backwards from that. An evening flight out of Palermo is comfortable; an early-afternoon one is not, unless you take the 06:20 — or the 02:20, which exists, and which someone always needs. All of those leave from Agrigento: you have to get there from Palma first, and those departures are not simply the outward times reversed, so run the SAL search for your own date and direction. For a genuinely early flight the answer is usually a night in Agrigento near the terminal, or a car at the hour you need.
What to check before you travel
Everything above was verified on 12 August 2026, and Sicilian timetables change with the season. Three things to re-check:
- The SAL search for your exact date, both legs, both directions — a public holiday can behave like a Sunday.
- Your realistic arrival time against the 15:30 coach and the 19:30 last departure, baggage reclaim included.
- How the last stretch is covered, in writing, from whoever is expecting you.
Arriving on a Sunday, or after the last coach
A private transfer from Palermo Airport to Mandranova puts a driver in arrivals with your name, plans the pickup on your flight's real arrival time, and takes one vehicle to the gate — including Sundays, when no coach runs between Agrigento and Palma di Montechiaro.
