The day of the week decides everything
Most airport-to-resort routes have one answer. This one has two, and what switches between them is the calendar, not the hour.
On Sundays and public holidays a direct train runs from the station underneath the airport terminal all the way to Cefalù: one train, one ticket, €13.10 a head. On every other day that train does not exist, and the journey becomes two trains with a change at Palermo Centrale.
We ran the same search on the Trenitalia sales engine, date by date, on 12 August 2026: five direct departures on Sunday 16 August, and zero on Thursday 13 August, Friday 14 August, Saturday 22 August, Saturday 5 September and Saturday 12 September. Saturday 15 August does show the five runs — but only because Ferragosto is a public holiday, not because Saturdays work.
Trenitalia and the Regione Siciliana call the seasonal service the "Cefalù Line", and the official description matches the sales engine: on holidays, 18 extra connections between Palermo Centrale and Cefalù and 8 between Palermo Aeroporto and Cefalù; on Saturdays, 5 extra from Palermo Centrale and 4 from Palermo Notarbartolo — note the station, because it is not the airport; Monday to Friday, 2 extra from Palermo Centrale and nothing from the airport.

The Sunday train: the best deal on this route
Land on a Sunday in season and the train is the cheapest and simplest way to reach Cefalù. We are not going to pretend otherwise.
The five direct departures the sales engine showed on 12 August 2026 for Sunday 16 August leave the airport at 06:56 (arriving 08:34), 10:56 (12:30), 14:56 (16:30), 16:56 (18:44) and 17:40 (19:30), at €13.10 per person. The same Sunday shows three direct returns from Cefalù to the airport — 08:53 → 10:32, 10:30 → 12:15 and 18:54 → 20:34 — also at €13.10. Five out and three back is exactly the "8 connections" the region advertises.
The airport station is in the basement of the terminal, in the airport's own words. But with five departures only, the first at 06:56 and the last at 17:40, missing one is not a fifteen-minute problem: land at 18:30 on a Sunday and the last direct has gone.
One caveat: nobody has published the start and end dates of the 2026 Cefalù Line season. What we can tell you is what the sales engine showed on 12 August 2026 — direct runs still appear on Sunday 27 September and have disappeared by Sunday 4 October. Treat that as an observation, not an announcement, and search your own date on lefrecce.it.
There is no bus from Palermo Airport to Cefalù
This comes up constantly, and the answer is a flat no.
The airport publishes the full list of coach companies serving the terminal — Cracchiolo, Prestia e Comandè, Segesta, SAL, Gallo, SAIS, Russo and Salemi — with every destination they cover: Cinisi, Terrasini, Trapani, Agrigento, Porto Empedocle, Sciacca, Menfi, Ribera, Catania, Messina, Enna, San Vito Lo Capo, Castellammare del Golfo, Marsala and Mazara del Vallo. Cefalù is not on that list.
You can reach Palermo by coach and look for onward road transport there, but we could not read a timetable or fare for a Palermo-to-Cefalù coach on any operator's website: the search only works through a booking form, and aggregator numbers are not a source we will print. On this route the railway is the public transport; the coach exists only to cover the airport-to-Palermo leg.

Any other day: the change at Palermo Centrale
Monday to Saturday the journey has two legs. It works, it is cheap, and it costs about two and a half hours.
Leg one, airport to Palermo Centrale. The train costs €6.80, with around 36 direct departures a day from 05:18 (arriving 06:20) to 22:40 (arriving 23:40). Journey time is 51 minutes on the quickest services and 1h02 to 1h09 on the rest.
One number needs correcting, because it is everywhere. Trenitalia's page advertises the airport link as "just over half an hour" — true, but it refers to Palermo Notarbartolo, not Palermo Centrale. Airport to Notarbartolo is 33 minutes; airport to Centrale is 51 minutes at best.
Leg two, Palermo Centrale to Cefalù. This part is easy: on the weekday we checked there were 24 direct connections and not one requiring a change; Saturday had 26 and Sunday 19. The Regionale fare is €7.10, rising to €9.00 on Intercity services that stop at Cefalù. Journey time runs from 45 minutes on the fastest — Regionale Veloce 5350, 05:01 to 05:46 — to the 50 to 58 minutes typical of the Regionali.
Buy one ticket, not two. The sales engine prices the whole airport-to-Cefalù journey at €13.10, less than the legs bought separately (€6.80 + €7.10 = €13.90). The point is not the size of the saving; it is that the through ticket exists if you type Cefalù as your destination. Door to door it comes to 2h04 to 2h33, the first workable solution leaving at 05:18 and arriving at 07:43.
Land on a Saturday afternoon and there is a variant worth knowing: the Saturday direct trains leave from Palermo Notarbartolo, 33 minutes from the airport, and we verified two of them for Saturday 22 August 2026, at 17:07 and 19:07. Whether that beats the change at Centrale depends on when you clear arrivals, so check both on the day.
The airport coach: cheaper into the city, but it does not reach Cefalù
Prestia e Comandè runs the airport to Stazione Centrale line every 30 minutes, every day including public holidays, with a declared journey time of 50 minutes. From the airport the first departure is at 05:05 and the last at 01:05, with an official flexibility of 10 to 15 minutes on the runs after midnight; Palermo to the airport runs from 03:30 to 21:30.
An adult single is €6.00 online or at a ticket office and €6.50 on board in cash or by card; a return is €10.00 online, €11.00 on board. Children aged 2 to 12 pay €4.00 single, under-2s travel free. At the airport, all bus stops are at the exit of the terminal, ground floor, arrivals area, on the right. In the city the terminus is at Stazione Centrale in Via T. Fazello, with stops at Politeama, Via Libertà and Via Roma.
So when does the coach beat the train? Almost never for the whole journey: it saves nothing on the Cefalù leg. It earns its place in one situation — your flight is late, the last airport train has gone, and you want to reach Palermo to sleep and continue in the morning. The coach runs until 01:05; the train stops at 22:40.

The evening that catches people out
On the weekday we checked, the last train from Palermo Centrale to Cefalù left at 21:33, arriving 22:30; the first left at 04:44, arriving 06:03. Put that next to the airport leg, which takes 51 minutes at best: if you clear the terminal much after 20:30, you are not making the last train, and the railway will not take you to Cefalù that night.
It is a common trap: summer flights into Palermo land late, and Cefalù is a beach town people book for the same night. There is no direct coach to fall back on. What is left is a road transfer, or an unplanned night in Palermo and a train in the morning.
The mirror image matters for the return, so plan it when you book the outbound. On the same weekday the first train from Cefalù to Palermo Centrale left at 05:25 (arriving 06:35), the last Regionale at 21:03 (arriving 21:59), plus an Intercity at 22:03 arriving 23:02 for €9.00. Add the airport leg and a dawn flight out of Palermo is arithmetic to do the night before.
Arriving at Cefalù station: the last kilometre
Part of why Cefalù works so well by train is that the station is in the town: Via Antonio Gramsci, on the south-western side of the built-up area, with the Palermo–Messina line running between it and the sea. We measured the walks on pedestrian routing, not in a straight line:
- 650 m, about 9 minutes to Piazza Garibaldi, the entrance to the old town at the top of Corso Ruggero.
- 850 m, about 11 minutes to the beach on Lungomare Giuseppe Giardina.
- 930 m, about 12 minutes to Piazza Duomo.
None of it is hard going, though the last stretch to the Duomo is slightly uphill. The station is well equipped for a town this size: three platforms, a waiting room, toilets, a bar, a newsstand and a tobacconist, a local bus stop outside, reserved parking and a step-free route to platform 1. Assistance for passengers with disabilities or reduced mobility runs through the Sala Blu network, coordinated from Messina, with requests made up to 12 hours before departure. Ticketing is self-service; we could not confirm the hours of a staffed counter, so do not count on one.
Two things we cannot tell you, because no official source publishes them: what a taxi costs from the station to your hotel, and how often the town bus outside runs.

The road: what we can and cannot tell you
No authority publishes a distance or a driving time for Palermo Airport to Cefalù, and we are not going to print one we cannot source. What we can tell you is what moves the needle: the motorway east of Palermo in high season, and the last streets of Cefalù in the evening, which are narrow and busy — we have no published journey-time data for those conditions and will not invent it. On taxis we have nothing to report either: no authority publishes a fixed fare for this run, so we are not quoting one.
What can be compared is the rail clock, because Trenitalia publishes it. The train on a normal weekday takes 2h04 to 2h33 with one change, and that clock starts when you reach a platform, not when the wheels touch down. On a Sunday the direct takes 1h29 to 1h50 for €13.10, which is as good as this route gets and says how much that seasonal service is worth. The road does not compete on a published time: what it removes is the change, the platform and the timetable.
When you do not need a private transfer
We sell private transfers, and would still rather you took the train when the train is right for you — on this route it very often is. Book rail and keep the difference when:
- You land on a Sunday or public holiday in season, in time for one of the five direct departures. €13.10 a head, no change, straight into town.
- You are one or two people with a case each, arriving during the day. It is a single change, and 24 direct trains a weekday means you are never waiting long for the second leg.
- Your accommodation is in the old town or near the seafront. Nine to twelve minutes on foot from the station.
- You are travelling with a bicycle. Bikes go free on Sicilian Regionale trains, with up to 12 bike spaces per train depending on the rolling stock. No car beats that.
If that is you, buy a through ticket to Cefalù, find the station in the basement of the terminal, and read a book.
When a car with a driver earns its place
The honest case is narrow, and it has nothing to do with the train being bad:
- You land on a weekday evening. After the last train from Palermo Centrale at 21:33 the railway is done — the difference between sleeping in Cefalù and sleeping in Palermo.
- You are flying out early. The first train from Cefalù leaves at 05:25 and the airport leg comes after it; for a dawn check-in the arithmetic does not close.
- You are three or more with cases. Multiply €13.10 by four or five, add a change at Palermo Centrale with a luggage trolley, and the comparison stops being about money.
- Children, a pushchair, a car seat, or someone who cannot manage the walk. Two trains, one change and a 900-metre uphill finish is a rough first hour of a holiday.
- Your flight is likely to be late. Pickup is scheduled on the real flight time, so a delay moves the driver rather than costing you a connection; waiting follows the booking conditions, shown before you pay.
- You are staying outside the centre — up towards the Rocca, or along the coast — where "the station is close to everything" stops being true.
What you get is a driver in arrivals, one vehicle to the door, and a fixed price confirmed before you pay, with the cases counted in advance: see the conditions on the Palermo Airport to Cefalù transfer page. What you do not get is a cheaper journey than a €13.10 train ticket, and we will not pretend you do.
Going on from Cefalù station
If Cefalù is your base rather than your destination, the station has one more thing worth knowing: Trenitalia's combined train-and-bus Link ticket into the Madonie villages, with SAIS Trasporti coaches leaving from the forecourt in front of the station. The supplement is bought with the train ticket in one transaction — €2.90 to Castelbuono, €4.80 to Geraci Siculo, €6.80 to Gangi — and carries no discounts.

What to check on the day you travel
Everything above was verified on 12 August 2026 against the sources linked beside each figure. Check four things before you leave:
- Whether your arrival day is a "festivo". A Sunday or public holiday means the direct train may run; a Saturday does not. Ferragosto behaves like a Sunday.
- Your realistic arrival time against 21:33 — realistic meaning after baggage reclaim, not the time on the boarding pass.
- That you are buying through to Cefalù, not to Palermo Centrale: one ticket at €13.10 rather than two at €13.90.
- Whether the Cefalù Line is still running your week. No official season dates have been published; direct runs were still showing on 27 September 2026 and gone by 4 October.
Get those right and this is an easy journey. Get the first two wrong and it is a long evening in a city you had not planned to visit.
