Quick answer — Agrigento to Piazza Armerina and the Villa Romana del Casale

Start with the fact that decides everything: no direct bus
Most guides to the Villa Romana del Casale wave at transport with "buses connect Piazza Armerina with the main Sicilian towns". They do — but not with Agrigento.
SAIS Autolinee publishes, for each town it serves, the origins from which you can actually buy a ticket. For Piazza Armerina: Barrafranca, Calascibetta, Caltagirone, Caltanissetta, Comiso, Enna, Enna Stazione, Ispica, Mirabella Imbaccari, Modica, Palermo, Pergusa, Pietraperzia, Ragusa, Termini Imerese, Valguarnera Caropepe, Villarosa and Vittoria. Eighteen origins. Agrigento is not among them (checked 12 August 2026 on the SAIS page for Piazza Armerina).
That is not an omission on a marketing page. The operator's line register, the one behind its ticketing system, gives the same answer: the only services touching Piazza Armerina are line 172 Palermo–Enna–Piazza Armerina–Gela, line 173 Palermo–Enna Bassa–Piazza Armerina–Caltagirone, line 174 Caltagirone–Piazza Armerina–Enna, with a branch to Aidone and a deviation via Valguarnera, and line 182 Pietraperzia–Barrafranca–Piazza Armerina. All four are active. None goes near Agrigento (SAIS line register, checked 12 August 2026).
Read those four lines as a shape and the geography explains itself: Piazza Armerina hangs off Enna to the north and Caltagirone to the east, with Palermo at the far end of the trunk. Agrigento sits on the south coast, on the axis that runs up to Palermo. Sicilian public transport moves people to the coast and the two big cities, not between inland provinces.
So from Agrigento there are three honest options: a change inland, with times you must confirm by phone; your own car; or a car with a driver. Anyone promising a direct coach has not read the operator's list.
The change everyone assumes, and what nobody publishes
Two of the eighteen sellable origins sit inland on the map between the south coast and the mosaics: Caltanissetta and Enna. Enna is the real hub — its SAIS terminal is at Viale Diaz 80, and the operator's page for Enna lists more than 38 destinations, Piazza Armerina among them (checked 12 August 2026 on the SAIS page for Enna). From Enna, the second leg exists.
The first leg is the part we could not stand behind, and it is the leg you would be taking. A direct road connection Agrigento–Caltanissetta appears neither in the SAIS Autolinee line register nor among Cuffaro's routes, and we could not check AST, whose site serves an invalid TLS certificate and publishes no consultable timetable index. Agrigento to Enna we could not verify either. So this is not a confirmed connection with unpublished times: it is a change to establish at a ticket counter before you build a day on it, and for Caltanissetta you would be asking about a service we could not find at all.
And here is where we stop rather than fill the gap with a plausible-sounding timetable. SAIS does not publish its departure times, durations or fares on the open web, and its booking engine only produces times inside a live session. We tried; we will not guess.
Which means one phone call rather than an hour of searching. The SAIS Trasporti ticket office in Agrigento is in Piazza Fratelli Rosselli, on 0922 26059 or 333 7678393, with a call centre on 091 2742800 (SAIS Trasporti, Agrigento office, checked 12 August 2026). Ask about the return as well as the outbound: the return is the leg that kills the idea.

One more thing before you plan around a bus. The SAIS stop register contains a purchasable stop called "SP15 (Scavi del Casale)", at 37.377054 N, 14.332016 E — on the provincial road near the excavations, not in the town. It sounds perfect until you measure it: roughly 1.3 km in a straight line from the Villa, the last stretch on foot along a provincial road. We could not establish which line calls there, or how often — confirm with SAIS before designing a day around it.
Cuffaro goes west, not east
Spend a day in Agrigento and you will see Cuffaro coaches, and reasonably assume they are the way inland. They are not.
Autoservizi Cuffaro runs the Palermo axis and only the Palermo axis: Palermo towards Agrigento, Canicattì, Favara, Racalmuto, Grotte, Castrofilippo, Santa Elisabetta, Raffadali and Aragona. It does not serve Piazza Armerina, and it does not serve Caltanissetta (Cuffaro, official route list, checked 12 August 2026).
What Cuffaro does, and does well, is Agrigento to Palermo in about two hours, from Piazzetta Rosselli to Piazzetta Cairoli next to Palermo Centrale. On weekdays there are twelve departures from Agrigento, the first at 4:45 and the last at 18:00; on Saturdays, nine. On Sundays and public holidays there are five: 8:15, 10:30, 15:30, 16:00 and 17:00 (Cuffaro official Palermo–Agrigento timetable, checked 12 August 2026).
That Sunday collapse — service more than halved — is the regional pattern, and it is what happens to any inland connection you try to string together on a Sunday. If your only free day is a Sunday, weigh that first.

The road: one inland run, and where you park
By car it is a straightforward inland run, coast to hills, with no change and no connection to miss. We will not print a distance or a drive time we could not source: neither the park nor the bus operators publish one for this pair, and a number invented for a blog post is exactly the number you would plan your afternoon around. Look the route up in your maps app on the morning you travel, then add for a tractor on a provincial road, roadworks, or an August queue at the Villa car park.
The Villa's address is SP 90, 94015 Piazza Armerina (EN). There is a large car park for cars, motorbikes and vans, charged by the hour, taking cash or card at the POS — but not American Express. The ticket office number is +39 0935 680036 (Villa Romana del Casale, contacts, checked 12 August 2026).
Note what that address implies. If you drive, you arrive at the entrance. If you come by coach, you arrive in the town — and you still have a problem to solve. Set off early enough, too, that the drive does not land you there in the hottest hours.
The last four kilometres: the shuttle from the town to the Villa
The Villa is roughly 4.3 km in a straight line from the bus terminus in Piazza Marescalchi and about 3.7 km from the town centre at Piazza Gen. Cascino — figures calculated from the official coordinates, so the road is longer. Not a walk to attempt with a bag in July.
There is a dedicated shuttle, and it is cheap: run by SA.DA. TOURS srl (S.G.S. Parcheggi) of Via Papa Montini 21, Piazza Armerina, on 366 4448128, operating from 1 April to 30 October. Fares are €1.50 one way on board and €2.50 for a day return.
Six runs a day. Outbound it leaves Piazza Senatore Marescalchi — the same square where SAIS coaches stop — at 09:35, 10:30, 12:30, 14:30, 16:35 and 17:30, calls at Piazza Gen. Cascino (the town info point) ten minutes later at 09:45, 10:35, 12:35, 14:35, 16:45 and 17:40, and reaches the Villa at 09:55, 10:45, 12:45, 14:45, 16:55 and 17:50. That is 20 minutes from the terminus, 10 from the info point.
Coming back it leaves the Villa at 10:05, 12:15, 14:15, 16:15, 17:05 and 19:00, reaching Piazza Marescalchi at 10:25, 12:30, 14:30, 16:30, 17:25 and 19:30. The 19:00 is the last one. Miss it and you are 4 km from town on a provincial road at dusk.
Now the detail that turns a good service into a trap: every run must be booked 15 minutes before departure. The official notice says so in Italian and English — turning up at 12:29 is not the same as having a seat at 12:30. The notice gives the season without stating which days the shuttle runs, so we cannot tell you whether it operates on a Sunday. Both are a phone call.
Read the two timetables together and the constraint appears: arriving by public transport, your visit has to fit between one shuttle out and one back — realistically the 10:30 out and the 14:15 or 16:15 back, if the coach into town lands at the right hour. Workable for one. Poor for four who also wanted Morgantina.

Tickets and hours at the Villa Romana del Casale
The numbers are simple, and the calendar is generous.
- Admission: €14 full, €7 reduced. Free for teachers, minors and visitors with a disability.
- Hours: open every day 09:00–19:00, with the ticket office closing and last entry at 18:00. No weekly closing day is listed — it opens on Sundays too, rarer than it sounds inland.
- Temporary exhibition: since 11 July 2025 a G. Aceves exhibition has been running; the combined ticket is €17.00 full, €10.00 reduced — a €3.00 supplement.
- Combined ticket: one ticket covers the Villa, the archaeological area of Morgantina, the Archaeological Museum of Aidone, the Museo della Città e del Territorio in Piazza Armerina and the Museo Interdisciplinare in Enna. With a car, this is the ticket to ask for.
There is also an evening opening from 10 May, 20:00–23:00, last entry 22:30. Its closing date is contested between the two official sources: the regional park's ticket page says 21 September, the Villa's own site says 14 September (both checked 12 August 2026). If you are travelling in the second half of September, treat the evening session as unconfirmed until the ticket office tells you otherwise on +39 0935 680036. Put the evening slot next to the shuttle timetable and a second problem is immediate: the last shuttle leaves the Villa at 19:00, an hour before the evening session begins. There is no public transport home — you need a car, your own or someone else's. Check the evening price too; the two sources diverge on it as well, and the figures above are the daytime ones we could verify.

Making the day worth the drive: Morgantina, Aidone and Palazzo Trigona
You have come a long way inland, and the combined ticket already covers the rest of the day. The catch is that every other site keeps shorter hours than the Villa, so the sequence matters more than the map. In August 2026:
- Museo della Città e del Territorio (Palazzo Trigona), in the centre of Piazza Armerina: weekdays except Monday, 09:00–19:00 with last entry at 18:00; on Sundays only 09:00–13:00, last entry 12:30.
- Archaeological area of Morgantina: weekdays 09:00–13:30, last entry 12:30; Sundays 09:00–16:30, last entry 15:30. The opposite way round — Sunday is the long day.
- Archaeological Museum of Aidone, home of the Venus of Morgantina: from 16 to 31 August, every day 09:00–18:00 with last entry at 17:00.
Aidone is reachable by scheduled bus in principle — the SAIS stop is in Piazza Generale Cultreri, served by line 174 with its Aidone branch. In practice, chaining the Villa, Morgantina and Aidone in a day on public transport, with a shuttle that runs six times and must be booked ahead, is a plan that looks good at 11pm and falls apart by 10:30.
With your own car it is an easy day: mosaics in the morning, Morgantina before its 12:30 last entry, the Venus at Aidone in the afternoon. Four opening-hour windows that only line up if you control your own timing.

When you do not need a private transfer
We sell private transfers, and would rather you skip one you do not need. On this route, don't book a car if:
- You already have a hire car in Agrigento. It is ordinary inland driving and the Villa has its own car park. Paying twice for the same journey makes no sense.
- You are one person, travelling light, with a whole flexible day. If the SAIS counter in Piazza Fratelli Rosselli gives you a workable pair of times, the fare is a fraction of any car, and you see a piece of Sicily most visitors never look at.
- You are already staying in or near Piazza Armerina. The whole problem shrinks to the last 4 km, and the shuttle solves it for €1.50 one way or €2.50 for the day — as long as you call ahead.
- You are heading east afterwards, towards Enna, Caltagirone or Ragusa. Piazza Armerina sits on the SAIS lines that go that way, so a coach onward may fit better than a car that has to come back.
We will not tell you the bus from Agrigento is bad: there isn't one to be bad. The real comparison is your own car against a car with a driver.
When a car with a driver earns its place
The case is narrow, and it is about time rather than distance:
- You are two or more. Split across three or four, the arithmetic against a coach fare plus a shuttle fare plus a lost afternoon stops being obvious.
- You want more than the Villa in one day. Those opening windows cannot be chained on six shuttle runs. A day with waiting time at a site, or a stop at Morgantina or Aidone on the way, is a different job from a point-to-point run: ask for it to be quoted that way, and the price you are given is the price for that day.
- You want the evening opening. The site opens 20:00–23:00 from 10 May, to a closing date the two official sources put a week apart, and the last shuttle back to town leaves at 19:00 in any case.
- You are travelling with children, a pushchair, or someone who cannot manage a hot walk on a provincial road. The gap between the bus stop and the entrance is the problem, not the trip.
- It is a Sunday or a public holiday. The regional pattern is fewer runs, not more, and a plan built on two changes rests on one missed connection.
- You are checking out, not coming back. Moving on with the luggage in one vehicle is the case a coach change handles worst, whatever the day looks like after the mosaics.
What a private transfer from Agrigento to Piazza Armerina gives you is a fixed price per vehicle, confirmed before you pay, a pickup at the hour you choose rather than the hour a timetable allows, and — if you name it when you book, so the quote covers it — a drop-off at the Villa entrance on the SP 90 instead of in the town, 4 km short of it. What it does not give you is a cheaper day than a coach fare, and we will not pretend otherwise.
What to check on the day you travel
Everything above was verified on 12 August 2026. This route has more moving parts than most; check four things before you leave:
- The shuttle: season, day of the week and your specific run, on 366 4448128 — the booking has to be made 15 minutes before departure, not on arrival at the stop.
- The Villa's hours for your date, including whether the evening session runs, on the park's ticket page.
- Morgantina, Aidone and Palazzo Trigona, which publish month-by-month hours and do not close on the same day.
- If you are attempting the coach: both legs confirmed by voice at the Agrigento ticket office on 0922 26059. The return decides whether the plan works.
One vehicle, no change, and the mosaics on your own timing
A private transfer from Agrigento to Piazza Armerina takes the whole route in one car and sets the pickup at the hour you want to leave. Ask for the drop-off at the Villa entrance on the SP 90 rather than in town, 4 km away, and it goes into the quote. Fixed price per vehicle, confirmed before you pay; early departures, evening returns and stops along the way quoted at booking.
