The gap on the map
Agrigento and Erice sit at opposite corners of western Sicily, and between them there is a hole in the network. No bus, no coach and no train runs from one to the other. What exists is a chain of three services, each run by a different company with its own timetable and closing days — only as strong as whichever link is shut the day you turn up. By road it is one drive across the width of western Sicily, and no official source we checked publishes a distance or a driving time for it, so measure it on a map before you plan the day. By public transport, budget most of a day.
And Erice is a hill town at 751 metres above the sea (Wikipedia, checked 12 August 2026), on a spur above Trapani. You do not simply arrive in Erice: you arrive in Trapani, and then you go up — by cable car, or by road along the Strada Statale Trapani-Erice or the Strada Provinciale Valderice-Erice.
The only coach that exists: Lumia, Agrigento to Trapani
One company links the two provinces: Autolinee Salvatore Lumia, on its Trapani–Sciacca–Agrigento line — not a tourist service but the road link between two provincial capitals. It leaves from Agrigento, Piazza Rosselli, calls at Trapani-Birgi airport about 25 minutes before the city, arrives at the Trapani bus station in Piazza Montalto and continues to Trapani Porto (the Egatour stop in Via A. Staiti) five minutes later — stay on for those five minutes if the port is where you need to be.
Departures on the timetable in force from 10 June to 14 September 2026:
- Weekdays: 04:30, 06:15, 08:00, 10:30, 13:10, 16:00
- Sundays and public holidays: 04:30 and 15:00 only
- Saturdays: the 08:00 and the 16:00 do not run, leaving four departures
Journey times are not uniform. The 04:30 is the fastest, into Trapani at 07:25 — two hours fifty-five. Everything else takes 3h25 to 3h40: 10:30 arrives 13:55, 13:10 arrives 16:40, 16:00 arrives 19:30, and both 06:15 and 08:00 take 3h40, arriving 09:55 and 11:40. The Sunday and holiday 15:00 arrives 18:15. Four days a year nothing runs: Lumia suspends the line on New Year's Day, Easter, Ferragosto (15 August) and Christmas Day.
Tickets are a trap of their own. Lumia's regulations say you buy at an authorised reseller before departure; buying from the crew is allowed only exceptionally, and only in cash. Boarding without a ticket costs the full fare for the whole line plus a penalty equal to 100 per cent of it. Fares are those approved by the Regione Siciliana — and here is the honest part: Lumia does not publish the Agrigento–Trapani fare, and no reliable source confirms a figure, so we will not invent one. Ask at the reseller, and buy the day before.
One dead end to save you the search: Autoservizi Salemi does not serve Agrigento. Its regional network links Palermo with Marsala, Mazara, Castelvetrano, Campobello and Salemi — no Agrigento–Trapani route, whatever a booking site suggests.

Trapani bus station to the cable car: the ATM city bus
The coach drops you in the middle of Trapani; the cable car leaves from the edge of it. Between the two you need a city bus, run by ATM Trapani.
On weekdays it is line 21 (Cappuccinelli–Spiaggia–San Giuliano–Cittadella della Salute–Ospedale–Funivia), ending in Via F.lli Aiuto at the stop called Funivia: first departure from the Terminal 06:40, last 20:35, roughly every 30 to 35 minutes. Line 23 runs the same corridor the other way for the trip back down, first 06:50, last 20:35, with returns until 21:00.
On Sundays and public holidays those two are replaced by line 201 (Lungomare Dante Alighieri–Spiaggia–Funivia–Piazza Vittorio Emanuele) and line 202 (Funivia–Ospedale–Spiaggia–Porto). ATM's summer network runs 15 June to 12 September 2026; outside it, numbers and times may differ.
Tickets are cheap: EUR 1.20 for 90 minutes, EUR 1.50 on board, EUR 3.00 for a day ticket, or 12 rides for the price of 10 at EUR 12.00 on the Drop Ticket app. Buy at the Terminal City in Piazzale Papa Giovanni Paolo II, in over 200 newsagents and tobacconists, or in ATM's online shop — before you board, to save the thirty cents.
One honest gap: ATM publishes departures from the Terminal and passing times at the hospital, but not the time at the Funivia stop, so no official source says how long that hop takes. Leave a margin, not a schedule.

The cable car: ten minutes, and the hours that decide your day
This is the good part, and the part that dictates everything else. The Funivia Trapani–Erice climbs from the valley station on the SP 31 per Erice, at the corner of Via Capua (tel. +39 0923 569306), to Erice Vetta in Via delle Pinete (tel. +39 0923 869720) in 10 minutes: an automatic gondola with eight-seat cabins, from 40 metres above sea level to 703, with night lighting and cabins set up for wheelchair boarding — 4 of the 42, a figure that comes from Wikipedia rather than the operator's own pages, checked 12 August 2026.

- Standard: EUR 9.00 single, EUR 15.00 return
- Children from 3 to 16 inclusive: EUR 2.50 single, EUR 4.00 return
- Residents in Sicily: EUR 6.50 and EUR 11.00; residents in the province of Trapani: EUR 4.00 and EUR 6.50
- Organised groups and tour operators from 25 people: EUR 6.50 and EUR 11.00
- Free: under-2s, blind and deaf-mute passengers, certified mental disability and wheelchair users — the companion pays full fare

Two rules to write down. Every Monday it opens at 14:00, in every season, for the weekly maintenance — and if that Monday is a public holiday the late opening moves to the next working day. And from 3 November to 4 December 2026 it is closed every day, reopening on 5 December: we found no notice of a replacement bus, so in that window plan on reaching Erice by road.
The rules that catch people at the gate. The ticket is strictly personal, non-transferable and not refundable if unused or lost. One bag up to 3 kg travels free and no published allowance covers anything heavier — which matters if you arrive with luggage rather than day-tripping. Dogs need a lead and muzzle, pushchairs and bicycles stay folded until the platform, under-8s travel only with an adult, and each cabin takes 8 people and 640 kg.
One last caveat. The top station is at 703 metres; the town is at 751. The last stretch, to Porta Trapani and the centre, is on foot and uphill, and no official source publishes the distance, the climb or the walking time. Open a map with your address before you assume the cable car puts you at the door.

The train: the option that looks reasonable and is not
Sicily has a railway along most of this coast, so the train looks sensible until you price the hours. There is no direct train from Agrigento to Trapani. Trenitalia's own search returns only solutions with two or three changes — Palermo Centrale, Piraineto, sometimes Castelvetrano — taking 7 hours 07 to 8 hours 08 for a regional fare of EUR 21.00. An example we ran for 15 October 2026: 07:15 from Agrigento Centrale, 14:22 at Trapani. Seven hours, and still at sea level with the city bus and the cable car ahead of you.
It is not a local quirk. Even Palermo to Trapani has no direct trains: every solution needs a change at Piraineto and takes 4h10 to 4h48 for about 100 kilometres, at EUR 14.30, because the trains run the long way round the coast via Castelvetrano rather than the old direct route via Salemi and Milo.
It gets worse in high summer. In August 2026 the Agrigento–Palermo section was worked by replacement buses — Trenitalia's timetable shows entries like "treno 5410 effettuato con bus PA907" — pushing the journey to Trapani to 10 hours and 1 minute. By October the same section shows trains again, so check your date. And Erice has no station: the last leg is always the cable car or the road.

Driving yourself, and where to leave the car
With a hire car the road is the simplest answer: one vehicle, no changes and no timetable to miss. Erice is reachable from the Strada Statale Trapani-Erice and the Strada Provinciale Valderice-Erice, so you can drive all the way up. Most people do not: they leave the car at the bottom and take the cable car.
There are two car parks reserved for cable car customers at the valley station: P1 at the corner of the former SP 31 and Via Capua, P2 at the corner of Via Avellino and Via F.lli Aiuto. The tariff is EUR 5.00 for the first three hours, EUR 1.00 per additional hour, EUR 10.00 for the day, paid on the way out at the machine beside P1. Add four return cable car tickets and the day costs more than most people expect — but the car is still right if you want to stop on the road west, the one thing three timetables can never do.
Putting the chain together: what a realistic day looks like
The best combination is the 10:30 from Piazza Rosselli, into Trapani at 13:55. The city buses are running, the cable car has been open since 08:30, and you reach Erice with the afternoon ahead. In high season the cable car itself runs until midnight or 01:00, but the city buses below it do not: the last ATM 21 leaves the Terminal at 20:35 and line 23's returns stop at 21:00, so an evening up there means deciding in advance how you cross Trapani afterwards.
The 04:30 is the fastest coach and the worst plan. A genuine 2h55, into Trapani at 07:25 — before the cable car opens on any day of the year. You spend the forty-five minutes you saved sitting in a bus station.
The 16:00 arrives at 19:30, and it works, but on one bus: the last ATM 21 leaves the Terminal at 20:35, and nothing is published after it.
Monday is the day the chain breaks. Whichever coach you take, the cable car carries nobody before 14:00: move the day, or go up by road.
Saturday loses the 08:00 and the 16:00. Sunday and public holidays are hardest: only 04:30 and 15:00, the latter arriving 18:15, and the Funivia stop is then served by ATM 201 and 202, whose departure times we could not confirm from the published timetables — check ATM's site the morning you travel.
Two things override all of the above. On New Year's Day, Easter, Ferragosto and Christmas the coach does not run at all. And this timetable is valid to 14 September 2026: its replacement was not online when we checked.
When you do not need a private transfer
We sell private transfers, and on this route public transport genuinely works for a lot of people. Take the coach and the cable car if:
- You are one or two people travelling light. A coach ticket plus EUR 1.20 plus EUR 9.00 is a fraction of any private car.
- You are travelling Tuesday to Friday, with six coach departures rather than four or two, and the cable car open from 08:30.
- Your day is flexible. Leave at 10:30, arrive mid-afternoon, and the timetable is on your side.
- You want the cable car anyway. Ten minutes over the roofs of Trapani is one of the better arrivals in Sicily, and EUR 15.00 return is honest value.
- You are carrying on to a flight from Trapani-Birgi. The same coach calls at the airport, so in that direction the chain is shorter than it looks.
If that is you, close this page, buy the coach ticket at a reseller the day before, and keep small change for the bus.
When a car with a driver earns its place
The honest case for a private transfer between Agrigento and Erice is not the distance. It is the days when the chain does not hold, and what three vehicles do to a family:
- Three or more people with cases. Multiply the fares, then add a coach, a city bus with steps and a gondola with a 3 kg free-bag rule.
- Monday, or any date from 3 November to 4 December 2026. The cable car is shut until 14:00, or shut entirely; the road up is open regardless.
- Sunday, New Year's Day, Easter, Ferragosto or Christmas. Two coaches, or none at all.
- You need to leave after 16:00 — the last weekday coach from Agrigento.
- Children, a pushchair, or anyone who cannot manage an uphill walk from the top station into the town.
- An early flight from Trapani-Birgi, or any departure before the first coach of the day. Pickup is scheduled on the real departure time, not on a coach.
What you get is one vehicle from your address to Erice, a pickup planned around your real time, waiting time as set out in the booking conditions, and a fixed price confirmed before you pay. What you do not get is a cheaper journey than a coach ticket plus EUR 1.20 plus EUR 9.00, and we will not pretend otherwise.
What to check on the day you travel
Everything here was verified on 12 August 2026, and western Sicily runs on seasonal timetables. Check four things:
- The Lumia timetable in force. These departures expire on 14 September 2026, and the winter sheet was not published when we checked.
- The cable car's hours for your exact date, including the Monday 14:00 rule and the 3 November – 4 December 2026 closure.
- Which ATM lines are running — 21 and 23 on weekdays, 201 and 202 on Sundays and holidays.
- The coach fare, at the reseller. It is not published online, and boarding without a ticket costs the full line fare plus a 100 per cent penalty.
One vehicle instead of three
A private transfer from Agrigento to Erice goes from the Valle dei Templi to the top of the hill in one car — on a Monday morning, on a Sunday, on Ferragosto, or in the month when the cable car is closed. Pickup is planned on your real departure time, and the price is fixed and confirmed before you pay.
