Trapani Airport to Trapani City and Port: 2026 Guide

About fifteen kilometres of road, and still easy to get wrong: the AST bus into Trapani runs 21 times on a weekday but only 14 on a Sunday, and nothing leaves the airport for the city between 01:00 and 07:10. Here is every option with its official source, the fixed €35 taxi fare, and the honest case for each.

Quick answer — Trapani Birgi (TPS) to Trapani city and port

  • Bus: AST runs the line into town: 40 minutes to the Trapani-Porto terminus, 30 to the stop called simply Trapani
  • Frequency: 21 departures on the weekday and the Saturday we checked, only 14 on the Sunday
  • The gap: after the night run nothing leaves for the city until 07:10 on a weekday, 07:30 on a Sunday, and the terminal building is shut daily from 00:30 to 04:30
  • Taxi: the airport publishes a fixed fare of €35.00 Birgi–Trapani, and the same €35.00 Birgi–Marsala
  • For the Egadi: the AST line terminates at Trapani-Porto, and the Liberty Lines pier is at Via Ammiraglio Staiti 23 — but AST does not publish where its stops physically stand, so ask at the airport ticket desk before planning a tight hydrofoil connection

Fifteen kilometres, and a terminal that is not in Trapani

Airgest calls Trapani Birgi a "city-airport" and puts it about 15 km from both Trapani and Marsala, 23 km from the top of Erice and 50 km from San Vito lo Capo (airgest.it, checked 12 August 2026). The terminal is not in Trapani at all: it stands in the comune of Misiliscemi, 91031.

Nobody publishes a car journey time for this pair — not the airport, not the taxi tariff, not AST for its own line. The only official durations here belong to the bus: 40 minutes from the airport to Trapani-Porto, 30 to the stop called simply Trapani. Any driving time you read elsewhere is somebody's estimate, so you will not find one on this page. And Trapani is stretched along a spit of land: the distance that counts is the one to your own address, not to the city sign.

The AST bus: the default answer, and the terminus is the port

Airgest lists three scheduled coach operators at Birgi, each with its own destinations, and the one listed for Trapani is AST, Azienda Siciliana Trasporti (+39 0923 21021). The other two are listed elsewhere — Autoservizi Salemi for Palermo, Birgi and Marsala, Autolinee Lumia for Agrigento, +39 0922 20414 (Airgest, "Bus e Navette", checked 12 August 2026). That list names destinations, not exclusivities: Lumia publishes its own stops in Trapani too, as you will see below. AST is the obvious answer, not provably the only one — ask at the airport ticket desk what is running on your day.

The route has four stops. On the official AST engine (checked 12 August 2026) a run reads: Trapani Aeroporto Birgi 10:00 → Paceco-Biv. 10:10 → Trapani 10:30 → Trapani-Porto 10:40. Forty minutes end to end, thirty to the stop named Trapani. Two things follow, both mattering more than the fare.

The terminus is the port, not the railway station. AST lists Trapani and Trapani-Porto as two distinct arrival points, and the bus finishes at the second: staying near the station you get off ten minutes earlier, catching a hydrofoil you stay on to the end.

AST does not publish where its stops physically are. That is a real gap and we will not paper over it with a guess. What is published is another airport carrier's stop list: Autolinee Lumia gives its Trapani points as "Via A. Staiti Egatour (Porto)" and the "Autostazione P.zza Montalto" (autolineelumia.com, checked 12 August 2026) — Via Ammiraglio Staiti being the hydrofoil street. Ask at the airport ticket desk which point AST uses that day.

At the airport end, the bus does not stop at the kerb outside arrivals: Airgest describes a dedicated bus area and "a safe reserved pedestrian route connecting to the bus station and the Rent a car area" (Airgest, "Viabilità Land-Side"), and Salemi calls the same point "AEROPORTO TRAPANI BIRGI Area Bus". One last thing older guides get wrong: AST dropped several provincial services on 1 July 2025 after an in-house award, but Trapani–Birgi is not among them (AST notice, 30 June 2025).

The timetable: a good weekday, a good Saturday, and a Sunday that changes the plan

We ran the official AST engine on three dates in August 2026 (checked 12 August 2026) to see the shape of the service. Departures from the airport towards Trapani-Porto:

  • Weekday, Thursday 13 August — 21 runs: 00:30, 01:00, 07:10, 07:15, 08:15, 08:40, 10:00, 11:30, 12:30, 13:30, 13:50, 14:30, 14:50, 15:30, 16:30, 17:30, 18:30, 19:30, 20:30, 21:30, 22:30.
  • Saturday 22 August — 21 runs: 00:30, 07:10, 07:15, 08:15, 08:40, 09:30, 11:30, 12:30, 13:30, 13:50, 14:30, 14:50, 15:30, 16:30, 17:30, 18:30, 19:30, 20:30, 21:30, 22:30, 23:30.
  • Sunday 23 August — 14 runs: 01:00, 07:30, 08:15, 09:15, 11:00, 12:30, 13:30, 15:15, 16:30, 17:30, 18:30, 19:30, 20:45, 21:30. A third of the service gone, and the last bus at 21:30.

From mid-morning on you are usually looking at one bus an hour, with clusters early and around lunchtime: workable for a short hop. The hole is at the start of the day. Nothing leaves the airport between 01:00 and 07:10 on the weekday, or between 01:00 and 07:30 on the Sunday — over six hours with no bus into town. If your flight lands inside that window, the fare stops being the question: the bus is simply not there. We checked one Thursday, one Saturday and one Sunday, all in August: holidays and the winter timetable are unknown to us, so reopen the engine for your date.

Outbound the service is denser and starts earlier. Weekday from Trapani-Porto — 22 runs: 04:00, 06:00, 06:35, 07:15, 08:15, 10:30, 11:30, 12:00, 12:30, 12:50, 13:30, 14:15, 14:30, 15:30, 16:30, 17:30, 18:30, 19:30, 20:30, 21:30, 22:30, 23:30, the Trapani stop served five minutes later each time. Sunday — 16 runs: 04:00, 05:00, 06:00, 07:15, 08:15, 10:00, 11:30, 12:30, 13:30, 15:30, 16:30, 17:30, 18:30, 19:30, 20:30, 23:30. Allow 40 minutes from the port, 35 from the Trapani stop, AST's own running times, then add your own margin.

Tickets: three ways to buy, and one thing the ticket does not do

AST sells tickets online after registering an account, through the AST Ticketing app, and on board from the driver — on board, only single and return tickets, in cash or by credit card. Airgest adds a fourth channel, easy to miss on arrival: a ticket desk inside the terminal.

The detail that catches people out: AST states that the ticket does not reserve a seat, and that it carries the date of purchase, not the date of travel (AST, "Modalità acquisto biglietti", checked 12 August 2026). Buying ahead buys convenience, not a place on a specific bus.

On price we stop short rather than print a number that turns out wrong at the door. AST publishes intercity fares in kilometre bands: €1.90 single and €3.00 return up to 10 km; €2.40 and €3.80 from 10 to 15 km; €2.70 and €4.20 from 15 to 20 km; €2.90 and €4.80 from 20 to 25 km (AST Tariffe, Tabella A, checked 12 August 2026). Trapani–Birgi sits inside those bands, but AST does not publish the fare distance for this line, and third-party sites quoting a single figure contradict each other. Expect a couple of euro, carry cash, ask at the airport desk — whatever the number is, it is a fraction of everything else here.

Straight to the Egadi: the port, the pier, and the shuttle that goes there

For a large share of Birgi arrivals Trapani is a corridor to Favignana, Levanzo or Marettimo — Airgest says as much, noting that the airport's position "favours quick connections with the ferry docks for the Egadi islands". You are not catching a bus, you are catching a boat.

The pier and the Liberty Lines ticket office are at Via Ammiraglio Staiti 23, open daily 06:00–20:00, +39 0923 022 022 (libertylines.it, checked 12 August 2026). The bus terminus is on the same street, but no official source measures the walk from stop to boarding gate: short and unmeasured, so do not build a five-minute connection on it.

The timetable in force since 1 June 2026 gives 19 daily departures from Trapani to Favignana, the first at 06:50 and the last at 21:00, 16 to Levanzo and only 7 to Marettimo (08:00, 08:30, 11:00, 12:30, 15:00, 17:45, 21:00), per the official Egadi timetable (checked 12 August 2026). Liberty Lines publishes departure times but not arrival times, so nobody can tell you how long the crossing takes.

Those seven Marettimo sailings are why this section exists: a missed boat costs half a day, and an hourly bus is a thin margin when a flight lands late. Connecting to a specific sailing — the 08:00 or the 21:00 above all — is the moment to weigh the private transfer from Trapani Airport to Trapani against the wait for the next bus.

There is also a dedicated shared shuttle. TAB, Trapani Airport Bus, runs airport to Porto di Trapani at €10.00 per person, minimum two people, quotes about 25 minutes and drops passengers "in front of the hydrofoil boarding"; its driver waits in arrivals with a TRAPANI AIRPORT BUS sign, and the booking form asks for your inbound flight. Service is guaranteed for bookings made at least 24 hours ahead; later than that, phone +39 339 4130555 (trapaniairportbus.com, checked 12 August 2026). For two people with heavy bags, €20 to the pier is a fair trade — though the site carries no last-updated date, so confirm first.

Taxi: a fixed €35, published by the airport itself

This is one of the rare Italian airports where the fixed fare is printed by the airport operator instead of being buried in a council resolution. Airgest publishes the tariffs set by the Comuni of Trapani and Marsala: €35.00 fixed between Birgi and Trapani, the same €35.00 between Birgi and Marsala. On the meter the published figures are €3.00 initial charge, €14.50 minimum fare, €1.50 per kilometre "including the return leg" and €20.00 per hour of waiting. That per-kilometre wording is the airport's own, and it matters: the driver's empty return leg is already priced into the rate, so the meter does not simply count the kilometres you ride.

The rank is at the exit of the terminal. For when it is empty, Airgest lists Radio TAXI 0923 0880 and Radio Taxi Trapani 1852 +39 0923 1852. Ask for the fixed airport fare by name before you get in: it is the fare the Comune set, and asking is normal here. (Airgest, "Transfer e Taxi", checked 12 August 2026.)

The terminal closes at 00:30, and that changes the night

Airgest states that the terminal building is closed every day from 00:30 to 04:30 (Airgest, "Aerostazione", checked 12 August 2026). Not the runway — the building. Land on a delayed late flight, or arrive early for a dawn departure, and you cannot sit inside and wait.

Line that up against the bus. The weekday and Saturday timetables show a city departure at 00:30, exactly the closing time, and the weekday and Sunday ones at 01:00; Salemi has a 01:30 towards Palermo. There is night movement at Birgi, more than at most airports this size — but it is thin, it assumes your aircraft is roughly on time, and no official source states that these runs are coordinated with flight arrivals. The times happen to suit night flights, they are not promised to wait for one. If your scheduled arrival is after 23:30, plan as though you will be outside a closed terminal with your luggage.

Not stopping in Trapani: Marsala, Palermo, Erice and the rest of the west

Birgi is the low-cost door to the whole western corner of Sicily. The Salemi figures below come from the operator's timetables in force from 6 July 2026 (outbound PDF, return PDF), checked 12 August 2026.

Marsala. Salemi runs Birgi to Marsala's Via A. Fazio terminus, by the railway station, in 40 minutes (04:45 to 05:25, for instance), the reverse taking 20 to 30 minutes. No fare is printed for this leg: ask the Ticket Office at Trapani Airport, +39 0923 610111, or the booking centre on +39 0923 981120.

Palermo. The same line continues north, with 18 departures from Birgi on a weekday — the first at 01:30, then from 06:05 to 22:30 — and only 5 on a Sunday: 09:30, 11:00, 13:00, 18:00, 21:30. Reckon about 1h10 to Punta Raisi airport and 1h55 to 2h05 to the Via Fazello terminal beside Palermo Centrale. One warning printed in capitals on the operator's timetable: the service does not carry passengers between Punta Raisi airport and Palermo city, either way.

Fares on that leg reach us through a press item rather than the timetable: €11 from central Palermo (€5.50 children) and €8.40 from Palermo airport (€4.20 children), the ticket valid all day, so a delayed flight lets you take the next departure subject to seats (Tp24, 4 June 2026, secondary source, checked 12 August 2026). An indication — confirm when you buy.

Everywhere else. The AST engine offers 66 destinations from Trapani Aeroporto Birgi, among them Erice, Erice funicular station, San Vito lo Capo, Custonaci, Valderice, Mazara del Vallo, Castellammare del Golfo and Castelvetrano. How often each runs is a separate question: check them one by one, starting from our Sicily destination guide.

And the train? Not yet. Rail service between Marsala and Trapani resumed on 1 June 2025 after upgrade works, and a station named Vincenzo Florio serving the airport has been under construction since November 2024 — but it is not in service and RFI has published no opening date (RFI, 3 June 2025). Anyone sending you to Birgi by train is describing a future timetable.

When you do not need a private transfer

We sell private transfers, and on this route the bus wins more often than it loses. Take AST if:

  • You are one or two people with hand luggage or a case each. A couple of euro a head against any car is not a close contest.
  • You land on a weekday or Saturday between about 07:00 and 22:00, when there is roughly a bus an hour.
  • You are staying near the port or the old town. The line finishes at Trapani-Porto, where much of the central accommodation sits anyway.
  • Your hydrofoil is hours away, not minutes. Sailing tomorrow morning rather than this afternoon, the bus does the job.
  • You are heading to Marsala or Palermo instead. Salemi's coaches go there straight from the airport.

If that is you, follow the reserved pedestrian route to the Area Bus and keep some cash for the driver.

When a car with a driver earns its place

The honest case for booking ahead is narrow, and it is about the calendar and the load, not the kilometres:

  • You land between 01:00 and 07:10, or on a Sunday morning — no bus reaches the city then, and the terminal is shut from 00:30 to 04:30 — or you fly out before 04:00, ahead of the first AST departure.
  • You are connecting to a specific sailing. Seven boats a day to Marettimo: a pickup scheduled on your real arrival protects the connection, an hourly timetable does not.
  • You are three or more with cases. Multiply any per-person fare by four, add the walk at both ends, and the comparison stops being about money.
  • Children, a pushchair, a car seat, or someone who cannot manage the walk to the Area Bus. A 40-minute bus with no reserved seats is a poor first hour in Sicily.
  • Your flight is likely to run late. Pickup is scheduled on the real arrival time and waiting follows the booking conditions agreed in advance; a timetable does neither.

What you get is a driver in arrivals with your name, one vehicle to your address, and a fixed price confirmed before you pay — no meter, and whatever applies to your hour, a night rate included, is already inside the figure you agreed: nothing gets added at the kerb. What you do not get is a cheaper ride than a scheduled bus. If that describes your arrival, look at the Trapani Airport to Trapani private transfer; if it does not, the timetable above is the better answer.

What to check on the day you travel

Everything here was verified on 12 August 2026 on official sources, and Sicilian timetables move with the season. Before you leave, check three things:

  • The AST engine for your own date, and your realistic arrival time — baggage reclaim included — against the 01:00–07:10 gap and the 00:30–04:30 terminal closure.
  • The exact fare, at the airport ticket desk or on board: AST publishes bands, not a price for this line.
  • Your hydrofoil departure, and whether the Via Ammiraglio Staiti ticket office is open when you arrive — it closes at 20:00.

Arriving when the bus is not running, or with a boat to catch

A private transfer from Trapani Birgi to Trapani city or port puts a driver in arrivals with your name and takes one vehicle to your address or to the hydrofoil pier. Pickup is scheduled on your flight's real arrival time, waiting follows the booking conditions, and the price is fixed per vehicle and confirmed before you pay. The right call for the Sunday timetable, the 01:00–07:10 gap and tight Egadi connections.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get from Trapani Birgi airport to Trapani city centre?

+
AST runs the scheduled bus from Trapani Aeroporto Birgi into the city. Its official timetable shows four stops — Birgi, Paceco-Biv., Trapani and Trapani-Porto — with 30 minutes to the stop named Trapani and 40 minutes to the Trapani-Porto terminus, which is the port rather than the railway station. Taxis wait at the rank outside the terminal, and a shared shuttle, TAB, takes bookings to the port — its site carries no last-updated date, so confirm the service is running before you count on it. Verified on the official AST timetable engine and on airgest.it on 12 August 2026.

What time is the first and last bus from Trapani airport to Trapani?

+
On the weekday we checked (Thursday 13 August 2026) there were 21 departures, the first at 00:30 and the last at 22:30; on the Saturday, 21 departures with the last at 23:30; on the Sunday, only 14, from 01:00 to 21:30. Nothing leaves the airport for the city between 01:00 and 07:10 on a weekday, or between 01:00 and 07:30 on a Sunday. Winter times and midweek public holidays were not verified, so check the AST engine for your own date. Verified on the official AST timetable engine on 12 August 2026.

How much does the bus from Trapani airport to Trapani cost?

+
AST does not publish a fare for this specific line, and third-party sites quoting a single figure contradict each other, so no honest guide can give you one number. AST publishes intercity fares in kilometre bands: EUR 1.90 single and EUR 3.00 return up to 10 km, EUR 2.40 and EUR 3.80 from 10 to 15 km, EUR 2.70 and EUR 4.20 from 15 to 20 km. Buy at the airport ticket desk or on board from the driver, in cash or by credit card. The ticket does not reserve a seat. Verified on astsicilia.it on 12 August 2026.

How much is a taxi from Trapani airport to Trapani?

+
Airgest, the airport operator, publishes a fixed fare of EUR 35.00 between Birgi airport and Trapani, and the same EUR 35.00 between Birgi and Marsala, set by the two Comuni. On the meter the published figures are EUR 3.00 initial charge, EUR 14.50 minimum fare, EUR 1.50 per kilometre including the return leg, and EUR 20.00 per hour of waiting. The rank is at the exit of the terminal; ask for the fixed airport fare by name before boarding. Verified on airgest.it on 12 August 2026.

How do I get from Trapani airport to the Egadi islands hydrofoils?

+
The AST bus terminates at Trapani-Porto, on Via Ammiraglio Staiti, the same street as the Liberty Lines pier and ticket office at number 23, open daily 06:00 to 20:00. No official source measures the walk from the bus stop to the boarding gate, so leave margin. The shared shuttle TAB, Trapani Airport Bus, advertises the airport to the port for EUR 10.00 per person with a minimum of two people, in about 25 minutes, guaranteed for bookings made at least 24 hours ahead; its site carries no last-updated date, so confirm the service is running before you count on it. From Trapani there are 19 daily sailings to Favignana, 16 to Levanzo and only 7 to Marettimo. Verified on libertylines.it and trapaniairportbus.com on 12 August 2026.

Is there a train from Trapani airport, and how do I reach Marsala or Palermo?

+
There is no train yet: the Vincenzo Florio station serving the airport has been under construction since November 2024 and RFI has published no opening date. Autoservizi Salemi runs coaches from the airport to Marsala in 40 minutes, and north to Palermo, with 18 departures on a weekday and 5 on a Sunday, reckoning about 1h10 to Punta Raisi airport and 1h55 to 2h05 to the Via Fazello terminal by Palermo Centrale. That service does not carry passengers between Punta Raisi and Palermo city. Autolinee Lumia serves Agrigento. Verified on rfi.it, autoservizisalemi.it and airgest.it on 12 August 2026.
