The airport is not in Trapani, and it is not in Marsala
Vincenzo Florio airport at Birgi sits in the comune of Misiliscemi (postcode 91031), neither Trapani nor Marsala — which explains much of the confusion online, where most pages treat it as a suburb of Trapani.
For Marsala it is the nearest airport there is. How near, nobody official says: neither the airport company nor the Comune publishes a road distance for this stretch, and the figures circulating online do not agree with each other. The one we can attribute is roughly 14 kilometres, quoted by a local tourism portal, checked 12 August 2026 — a secondary source, not an official one. Plan on the published journey times rather than the kilometres: the scheduled bus is timetabled at 40 minutes on every run.
What matters more than distance: the airport has no railway station. RFI has a future station named after Vincenzo Florio in its plans for the Palermo–Trapani line, but it does not exist yet, and the airport company calls the airport equidistant from the Trapani and Marsala stations — so going to Trapani for a train back to Marsala goes backwards before it goes forwards.
The bus: Autoservizi Salemi, 40 minutes, nothing in between
Airgest lists the scheduled carriers at Birgi by destination, and for Marsala there is exactly one name: Autoservizi Salemi, on the Palermo / Birgi airport / Marsala service, on +39 0923 981120. The other two go elsewhere — Autolinee Lumia towards Agrigento, AST for Trapani city, and AST is not listed for Marsala.
The second thing to know is that this is not a dedicated airport shuttle. The active line in the operator's register is 006, Marsala – SS115/SP21 – Palermo – Dir. SP21 APT Birgi: your bus is the final leg of the Palermo – Punta Raisi – Birgi – Marsala run. It does not wait at Birgi for flights, and whatever delayed it earlier arrives at your bay with it.
You board at the Area Bus, bay number 4, registered in the operator's systems as "Aeroporto Vincenzo Florio – Trapani Birgi (Stallo nr.4)", and the operator asks passengers to be there ten minutes before departure. In Marsala it terminates in Via Amerigo Fazio, beside the railway station, printed in the timetable as "MARSALA Capolinea Via A. Fazio (Stazione FS)". From there to the historic centre is about 1,192 metres, roughly a 16-minute walk according to a public transport data provider rather than an official municipal source, towards Piazza della Repubblica on the pedestrianised Via XI Maggio.
Between those two points the bus makes no intermediate stops at all: the official GTFS feed goes from the Palermo-side stops straight to the airport bay, then to Via Amerigo Fazio. Depending on the departure it takes the SP21 or the SS115, both declared at 40 minutes. If you are staying out towards the lagoon, it will not get you closer than the middle of town.
On the fare, we are going to disappoint you on purpose. Autoservizi Salemi publishes no price for this leg on its site or in the timetable PDF, and its ticketing engine needs a login. Figures circulate on aggregators; we could not confirm any at source, so we are not printing a guess dressed as a fact. Tickets are sold online on the operator's site, by phone through the Booking Center on +39 0923 981120, and at the airport, where Airgest confirms a ticket desk and gives the number +39 0923 610111. One call settles it. The shape of the answer is not in doubt: for one or two people with hand luggage a line-service ticket costs a fraction of any car, and that is the honest starting point for everything below.
The timetable, run by run
This is where the journey is decided, because frequency is the weak point. Departures from Birgi towards Marsala in the timetable in force from 6 July 2026, with the days each runs:
- 04:45 — Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays only
- 07:50 — Monday to Saturday
- 09:45 — Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays
- 11:45 — Tuesdays and Thursdays
- 12:00 — Saturdays only
- 14:15 — Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays
- 16:15 — Monday to Friday
- 18:15 — Monday to Saturday
- 20:15 — Monday to Saturday
Add 40 minutes to any of those for the arrival in Via Amerigo Fazio. Sunday has its own shorter service: 05:15, 07:50, 10:15, 14:00 and 18:15, arriving 05:55, 08:30, 10:55, 14:40 and 18:55.
Read the list as a single day and the picture sharpens: because of the day restrictions, any given weekday has six departures, Saturday five and Sunday five. The operator's official GTFS feed, valid 12 August to 4 October 2026, matches it run for run. Six departures across a whole day means gaps big enough to change your plans:
- Monday: nothing between 09:45 and 14:15 — four and a half hours.
- Thursday: nothing between 11:45 and 16:15 — the same hole, shifted.
- Saturday: nothing between 12:00 and 18:15 — over six hours with your luggage.
- Every evening: nothing after 20:15, and on Sunday nothing after 18:15.
That is not a sales argument, it is the printed timetable: put your landing time next to the list, add the wait for a case, and see which departure you can make. The return leg is easier — from Marsala to the airport the timetable shows 20 to 30 minutes depending on the run and the road, the first useful weekday departure is 05.45, and there is a night run at 01.00 for very early flights.
The timetables online that are no longer true
If you have already searched this route you have probably seen a far better service: an airport shuttle most hours, calling at Birgi Novo and Contrada Spagnola. That timetable was real. It is not now. Two Salemi lines are marked as withdrawn in the operator's own line register, checked 12 August 2026:
- Line 0051, Marsala – Via SP21 – Aeroporto Trapani Birgi, the dedicated airport shuttle behind the older schedules still circulating, with many more runs and the stops at Birgi Novo (SP1) and Contrada Spagnola (SP21). Those stops are not served today.
- Line 0052, Marsala – Sappusi – Mothia – Birgi – S. Teodoro, the only Salemi line that served the side of the lagoon where the boats for Mozia leave. There is no Salemi scheduled bus between Marsala and those jetties today.
The rule: if a page shows an hourly Birgi shuttle, or a bus calling in Contrada Spagnola, it is a withdrawn service. Trust the timetable dated 6 July 2026 on the operator's own site.
The train: cheap, frequent, and starting from the wrong place
The railway between Trapani and Marsala is in better shape than its reputation. The official RFI departure board for Trapani, valid 14 June to 12 December 2026, lists 16 regional trains a day stopping at Marsala, and — worth saying out loud in western Sicily — none is marked as a replacement bus. First out at 05:50, arriving 06:26; last at 20:46, arriving 21:23; 27 to 37 minutes depending on the service. The fare is €3.40 one way, direct, checked in Trenitalia's own sales engine on 12 August 2026 for a departure on 20 August. Nothing else here competes with that number.
Two caveats decide whether it is any use to you. On public holidays 12 of the 16 do not run, and only three are marked as running: the 05:55, the 09:10 and the 15:20. And you cannot board any of them at the airport — with no station at Birgi you would take a bus or taxi to Trapani, then ride back past the airport to Marsala, moving your luggage three times to save a few euro.
The train earns its place after you arrive. Between Trapani and Marsala it calls at Paceco, Marausa, Mozia-Birgi and Spagnuola, the last two being the closest stations to the Stagnone lagoon. Based in Marsala without a car, €3.40 a hop beats anything we sell.
Taxi: the option we can say the least about
We would rather admit a gap than fill it with something plausible. For taxis from Birgi to Marsala the only figure we can stand behind is around €20, quoted on 12 August 2026 by a local tourism portal — a secondary source, not a tariff, and we found no official fare table for this run. So do the one thing that protects you: agree the fare before you get in, out loud, for the exact address. And allow for the possibility that after a late flight there is less waiting outside than you hoped, at an airport whose bus service stops at 20:15 and where nobody publishes availability.
Mozia, the Stagnone and the salt pans: what the timetable does not solve
Many of the people who choose Birgi over Palermo are here for the lagoon: the salt pans, the windmills, the crossing to Mozia. The Fondazione Whitaker, which runs the island, lists four embarkation points along the Stagnone coast — Arini e Pugliese, Laguna dello Stagnone, Saline Genna and Mamma Caura — with departures every 30 minutes and a crossing of 8 to 12 minutes, and states plainly that it is not responsible for crossings cancelled by the weather, which on this coast is not a formality. Two operators we could verify directly at source on 12 August 2026:
- Arini e Pugliese, the Imbarcadero Storico at C.da Spagnola 228, 91025 Marsala, free parking on site, phone and WhatsApp +39 347 343 0329. Return crossing €6.00 adults, €4.00 children aged 6 to 12, €4.00 per adult in groups of 20 or more, €2.50 school groups. Every 30 minutes, 8 to 10 minutes across on a 115-passenger boat. April to October 09:15–18:30, November to March 09:00–15:00, closed Wednesdays unless booked in advance.
- Mozia Line, C/da Ettore e Infersa 158, 91025 Marsala, in the salt-pan area: €6.00 adults, €4.00 children aged 4 to 12, every 30 minutes, 09:45–18:30 from 1 April to 31 October and 09:15–15:00 from 1 November to 31 March. The boat is wheelchair accessible.
One thing catches almost everybody: the boat ticket does not include the island. Entry to the Isola e Museo Whitaker is separate — €12.00 full, €6.00 for under 18s, free under 5 — bought on the island or online. The island and museum open 09:30–18:30 from April to October and 09:00–15:00 from November to March; on 25 and 26 December and 1 and 6 January the last boat back is at 13:00.
The gap is getting there. Since line 0052 was withdrawn there is no Salemi scheduled bus between Marsala and the jetties, and the airport bus makes no stop in Contrada Spagnola. We could not check the Comune di Marsala's own urban and suburban lines, so do not assume nothing at all runs down there — assume you have to check it yourself before you rely on it. The nearest stations are Mozia-Birgi and Spagnuola, but we have not verified how far either is on foot from a jetty and will not estimate it with a suitcase in the balance. If your first afternoon starts at the lagoon, treat the last few kilometres as a separate problem: a hire car, a taxi arranged ahead, or a driver going straight to the jetty.
The cellar you booked for this afternoon
Marsala is a wine town before it is anything else, and many arrivals at Birgi have a tasting booked for the same afternoon at a fixed slot. Work it backwards before you land: take the departure you can realistically catch, not the one leaving eight minutes after your landing, then add the ten minutes at the stop, the 40-minute run and the walk from Via Amerigo Fazio — about 16 minutes to the centre, longer if your appointment is out of town, because the terminus is nowhere near the countryside cellars.
Often it works: land at 08:30 on a Monday and the 09:45 has you in Marsala before eleven. Land at 13:00 on a Saturday and the next bus is at 18:15, and the afternoon you flew here for is gone. Same route, different day — that is the whole story of this journey.
When you do not need a private transfer
We sell private transfers, and we would rather be honest than sell you one you do not need. Take the bus and keep the difference if:
- You are one or two people with a case each. A line-service ticket against a whole vehicle is not a close contest, whatever the fare turns out to be.
- Your flight lands within an hour or so of a departure. Six a day is thin, but if yours is one of the six the bus is direct, stops nowhere and is declared at 40 minutes.
- You are staying in central Marsala. The terminus is beside the station, roughly 16 minutes on foot from the centre on flat ground.
- Your afternoon is flexible. If nothing is booked, a four-hour gap costs time, not a missed appointment, and the regional train at €3.40 covers the province afterwards.
If that is you, sort the ticket before you fly and look for the Area Bus, bay number 4.
When a car with a driver earns its place
The honest case for booking ahead is about the timetable, not the distance:
- Your flight lands in one of the holes — Monday 09:45 to 14:15, Thursday 11:45 to 16:15, Saturday 12:00 to 18:15 — or in the evening, after 20:15 Monday to Saturday and after 18:15 on Sunday, when the scheduled bus is finished for the day.
- You have something booked for the same afternoon — a cellar, a tasting, a boat, a check-in window. Losing four hours to a timetable is expensive in a way the fare never shows.
- You are three or more, with cases, or travelling with children, a pushchair or a car seat. Multiply any bus fare by the heads, add the walk from Via Amerigo Fazio, and the comparison stops being about money.
- You are staying out on the Stagnone side, near the salt pans or towards Contrada Spagnola: no Salemi scheduled bus has served that stretch since line 0052 was withdrawn, and the airport bus stops nowhere between the terminal and the middle of town.
- Your flight is likely to move. The pickup is scheduled on your real flight time rather than the booked one, with waiting time as set out in the booking conditions; the 20:15 leaves at 20:15 regardless.
What you get is a driver waiting in arrivals, one vehicle from the terminal to the address you actually gave — the cellar, the agriturismo, the jetty — and a fixed price confirmed before you pay, with waiting time as set out in the booking conditions rather than invented at the kerb. What to check on the day you travel
Everything here was verified on 12 August 2026, and western Sicily moves its timetables with the season. Check three things:
- The timetable edition in force — the one quoted here runs from 6 July 2026, its GTFS feed to 4 October 2026 — against your realistic arrival time, landing plus the belt plus the ten minutes at the stop.
- The bus fare, by phone: Booking Center +39 0923 981120 or the airport ticket desk +39 0923 610111. Never an aggregator's price.
- Ferry season, the Wednesday closure and the separate island ticket if Mozia is in the plan.
Landing between the buses
