Palermo Airport to Trapani: Bus, Train, Transfer 2026

A hundred kilometres separate Palermo Airport from Trapani, and the railway takes between three and four hours to cover them — three times a day on a weekday, twice on a Sunday. The coach is declared at 1h10. This is the route where public transport splits cleanly in two, and we will tell you which half you are in.

Quick answer — Palermo Airport (PMO) to Trapani

  • The coach is the sensible public option: Segesta runs it, and the airport declares the journey at 1 h 10. The operator does not publish the fare on its site
  • The train is cheap and slow: €15.60, but 3h05 to 4h15 with a change at Piraineto, and only three departures on the weekday we checked — two on Sunday
  • Careful with the Birgi coach: the Salemi line from the airport goes to Trapani Birgi airport and Marsala, not to Trapani town
  • By road: the motorway west, one vehicle, door to door

The widest gap in western Sicily

Trapani is about a hundred kilometres west of Palermo Airport, along a motorway that hugs the coast. It is not a long way. What makes this route worth an article is how differently the two public options treat that distance.

The airport's own list of coach operators gives Segesta → Trapani, 1 h 10. The railway, for the same journey, took 3h37 at best on the weekday we checked. That is not a small difference in comfort — it is nearly three hours, on a hundred kilometres.

The train: €15.60, and three chances to catch it

Search Palermo Aeroporto to Trapani on the official sales engine for Thursday 27 August 2026 and you get three solutions for the entire day:

  • 10:45 → 14:22, 3h37, one change at Piraineto — €15.60
  • 14:45 → 19:00, 4h15, two changes, at Piraineto and Castelvetrano — €15.60
  • 17:45 → 21:34, 3h49, one change at Piraineto — €15.60

On Sunday 30 August there were two: 09:20 → 12:25 (3h05) and 18:25 → 21:34 (3h09), both at €15.60 with a single change. Curiously the Sunday trains are the fastest of the week on this line.

The change is at Piraineto, a junction just a few kilometres from the airport itself — so most of those hours are spent not travelling but waiting for the connection, and then following a slow inland alignment towards the west coast.

There is a reason for the detour. The direct Palermo–Trapani railway via Milo has been out of service since 2013, and the line is still a worksite: RFI is electrifying it and fitting ERTMS over the 116 km between Alcamo, Castelvetrano and Trapani, with more than €400 million of investment and a new station planned at Marsala airport. Commercial service between Marsala and Trapani resumed on 1 June 2025. Until the work is finished, every train from Palermo to Trapani takes the long way round — and none of them serves either airport.

Works and service status from the RFI press releases on the Palermo–Trapani upgrade and the resumption of service, read on 20 August 2026.

None of this makes the train bad value: €15.60 to cross a corner of Sicily is honest money. It makes it a choice about your afternoon.

The coach: the right answer for most people, with one gap

The airport publishes its coach operators and where each one goes. For Trapani town the operator is Autoservizi Segesta, with a declared journey time of 1 h 10.

What we could not do is read a published fare or a timetable on the operator's own website: both sit behind its booking channels rather than on a public page. We are not going to print a number we could not verify — so treat the fare as something to check when you buy, and know that the journey time comes from the airport's own declaration.

There is one trap worth naming, because it catches people every summer.

The Birgi coach is not the Trapani coach

A second operator, Autoservizi Salemi, also leaves the airport — and its line goes to Trapani Birgi airport and on to Marsala. Birgi is the airport, out of town; it is not Trapani.

The Salemi timetable in force from 6 July 2026 shows departures from the Palermo Airport arrivals bus area at 03:35, 08:45, 10:45, 11:00, 13:15, 15:15, 17:15 and 19:15 — but each of those runs on its own days, not daily: 03:35 Tue/Wed/Sat, 08:45 Mon/Thu/Fri, 10:45 Tue/Thu, 11:00 Saturdays only, 13:15 Mon/Wed/Fri, 15:15 Mon to Fri, 17:15 and 19:15 Mon to Sat. Each reaches the Birgi airport bus area in about an hour, 70 minutes on the pre-dawn run — and on Sundays at 04:05, 09:15, 13:00 and 17:15. The same timetable carries an explicit warning in both Italian and English: the service is not available between Punta Raisi airport and Palermo city.

So: if your destination is the airport of Birgi, this line is excellent and runs from before dawn. If your destination is Trapani town, it is the wrong bus.

Departures from the Autoservizi Salemi official timetable PDF, edition in force from 6 July 2026, read on 20 August 2026. Fares are not printed on it.

The road: what you are actually buying

By road it is the A29 west, and the listed journey time on this route is around an hour and a half. No authority publishes an official door-to-door driving time and we will not invent one — but on this particular route the comparison is unusually stark, because the alternative is not a slower car. It is a railway with three departures a day.

That is what a transfer buys here: not luxury, but the right to land at a time of your choosing.

When public transport is the right call

We sell private transfers, and on this route we will say plainly that many people should take the coach:

  • You are one or two people and the coach is running. 1 h 10 declared, a fraction of the price of anything else — take it.
  • You are going to Birgi airport, not Trapani town. The Salemi line is frequent, starts at 03:35 and runs on Sundays too.
  • You have an afternoon to spend and like trains. €15.60 and the inland line to the west coast is a real journey, and the Sunday runs do it in just over three hours.

When a car with a driver earns its place

  • Your flight lands outside coach hours, or late enough that the last useful departure has gone.
  • You are three or more. A fixed price per vehicle against three or four individual fares changes the arithmetic quickly.
  • You are staying outside Trapani town — the salt road towards Marsala, or up at Erice — where the coach terminus is the start of another journey.
  • You have real luggage, children, or a tight connection to a Favignana or Pantelleria sailing.
  • Your flight might be late. Pickup follows the real flight time, and on a route with three trains a day that is the whole game.

What you get is a driver in arrivals, one vehicle west and a fixed price confirmed before you pay: see the conditions on the Palermo Airport to Trapani transfer page. What you do not get is a cheaper journey than a €15.60 train ticket, and we will not pretend you do.

Three trains a day, or your own departure time?

A private transfer from Palermo Airport to Trapani puts a driver in arrivals with your name and takes one vehicle west to your address, whatever time you land. The price per vehicle is fixed and confirmed before you pay.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get from Palermo Airport to Trapani?

+
The practical public option is the coach: the airport lists Autoservizi Segesta for Trapani with a declared journey time of 1 h 10, though the operator does not publish its fare on a public page. The train costs 15.60 EUR but takes 3h37 to 4h15 with a change at Piraineto and ran only three times on the weekday we checked. Verified on the airport site and the official Trenitalia sales engine on 20 August 2026.

How long does the train take from Palermo Airport to Trapani?

+
Between 3h05 and 4h15 for about a hundred kilometres. On Thursday 27 August 2026 there were three solutions: 10:45 to 14:22 (3h37), 14:45 to 19:00 (4h15, two changes) and 17:45 to 21:34 (3h49), all at 15.60 EUR. On Sunday 30 August there were only two, 09:20 to 12:25 and 18:25 to 21:34, both around 3h05 — the Sunday trains are the fastest of the week on this line.

Is the bus from Palermo Airport to Trapani direct?

+
Autoservizi Segesta serves Trapani town directly from the airport, with 1 h 10 declared on the airport's official operator list. Be careful not to board the Autoservizi Salemi line by mistake: that one runs to Trapani Birgi airport and Marsala, not to Trapani town. Its timetable also states explicitly that it does not serve the Punta Raisi airport to Palermo city leg.

What time does the bus leave Palermo Airport for Trapani Birgi airport?

+
On the Autoservizi Salemi timetable in force from 6 July 2026, departures from the Palermo airport arrivals bus area are at 03:35, 08:45, 10:45, 11:00, 13:15, 15:15, 17:15 and 19:15 across the week, but each runs on its own days rather than daily — 03:35 Tue/Wed/Sat, 08:45 Mon/Thu/Fri, 10:45 Tue/Thu, 11:00 Saturdays only, 13:15 Mon/Wed/Fri, 15:15 Mon to Fri, 17:15 and 19:15 Mon to Sat — each reaching the Birgi airport bus area in about an hour, and at 04:05, 09:15, 13:00 and 17:15 on Sundays. The line continues to Marsala. Fares are not printed on the timetable.

Is it worth taking a private transfer from Palermo Airport to Trapani?

+
It depends on when you land and how many you are. If the coach is running and you travel light, take the coach — 1 h 10 declared is hard to beat on price. A transfer earns its place when your flight lands outside coach hours, when you are three or more and a fixed price per vehicle beats several individual fares, when you are staying outside Trapani town, or when you have a ferry to Favignana to catch.
