Two Greek cities on the same coast, with no line between them
After a morning among the temples at Agrigento, Selinunte is the obvious second act: the same civilisation, the same century, on an empty coast where the ruins meet the dunes instead of a modern city. It is a short hop by Sicilian standards, two provinces along the same southern shore — and yet one of the hardest to do without a car, for a historical reason rather than a geographical one.
There used to be a railway along this coast. The narrow-gauge Castelvetrano–Sciacca–Porto Empedocle line ran its last train on 31 December 1985, and from 1 January 1986 every passenger and freight service ceased (Wikipedia, secondary source, checked 12 August 2026). Nothing replaced it. What is left, if you are not driving, is one coach company, one change, and a last leg whose timetable nobody publishes — or the private transfer from Agrigento to Selinunte, which we argue for below only where it earns it.
The Lumia coach: the only through service, and how it works
The through connection is the Agrigento – Trapani Birgi Airport – Trapani line of Autolinee Salvatore Lumia. Castelvetrano is a stop on it, between Menfi and Campobello di Mazara. The timetable in force is the summer edition, valid from 10 June to 14 September 2026.
From Agrigento (Piazza Rosselli), Monday to Friday, six departures: 04:30, 06:15, 08:00, 10:30, 13:10 and 16:00, reaching Castelvetrano at 06:00, 08:25, 10:10, 12:20, 15:10 and 18:00. The run takes between 1h30 (the 04:30, on empty roads) and 2h10 (the 06:15), typically close to two hours. On Saturdays the 08:00 and the 16:00 do not operate, leaving four departures — and the 08:00 is exactly the one a day-tripper would pick.
Coming back, Monday to Friday, Lumia leaves Castelvetrano at 10:20, 12:35, 14:35, 17:10, 19:35 and 22:05, into Agrigento at 12:15, 14:30, 16:30, 19:30, 21:15 and 23:40. The 12:35 and the 22:05 do not run on Saturdays.
In Castelvetrano the coach stops in Via Marinella 33 towards Trapani and Via Marinella 60 towards Agrigento — but on Sundays and public holidays those stops move to the McDonald's towards Trapani and the Bar Oasi towards Agrigento. Stand in Via Marinella on a Sunday and no coach is coming.
Tickets are the part that catches visitors. Lumia does not sell online, and the timetable says it in capitals: munirsi di biglietto o di monete prima di salire a bordo — have a ticket, or coins, before boarding. The only ticket office in the company's contacts is the Agrigento branch, Via Pindaro 3/c, telephone 0922 20414. The fare is published nowhere on the operator's site, so we will not guess it: ask when you buy, and keep small change for the return.
One more line from the official poster: no service at all on New Year's Day, Easter, Ferragosto and Christmas. Ferragosto is 15 August, mid-season, when most visitors are here.

Castelvetrano is not Selinunte: the last 14.7 kilometres
This is where plans made from home fall apart: the coach leaves you in Castelvetrano, and the park is not in Castelvetrano. The entrance is at Piazzale Iole Bovio Marconi 1, in Marinella di Selinunte, a seaside village in the municipality of Castelvetrano, province of Trapani; the park's number is 0923 1990030 (Parco archeologico di Selinunte, Regione Siciliana, checked 12 August 2026). From Castelvetrano railway station to that gate is 14.7 km, about 31 minutes by car (OSRM routing, checked 12 August 2026). Nobody walks it.
The published way to cover it without a car is the urban service run by Autoservizi Salemi between Castelvetrano and Marinella di Selinunte, roughly 30 minutes. CoopCulture confirms it exists and adds that its times change with the season and should be checked with the operator (secondary source, checked 12 August 2026). We went looking for that timetable and could not find one published — it is not on the operator's own list of lines, which is also where you can see that Salemi does not serve Agrigento at all (checked 12 August 2026): its network is built around Palermo, Marsala, Mazara del Vallo and the western airports. Treat the last leg as the unknown of your day: call the park on 0923 1990030 (answered daily 9 to 17) and ask whoever you are staying with, the evening before.
There is a second trap in the change itself. The two companies do not use the same stop. Autoservizi Salemi works from Piazza Matteotti (and the Santa Ninfa junction on the A29), while Lumia uses Via Marinella. You get off one bus and walk across town for the other: with a daypack an annoyance, with two suitcases and a connection to make, the point where the plan breaks.
Once in Marinella the rest is easy: from the centre of the village to the gate is about 760 metres, a little over ten minutes on foot (OSRM pedestrian routing, checked 12 August 2026).
The weekday day trip that does work
Put the two timetables side by side and one combination stands out, Monday to Friday: the 08:00 from Piazza Rosselli, into Castelvetrano at 10:10; the walk to Piazza Matteotti, the urban bus to Marinella and ten minutes on foot; then the 17:10 back, in Agrigento at 19:30, which means leaving Marinella in mid-afternoon to be safe.
That is roughly half a day on site, if the urban bus falls right. Be clear about what it rests on: two operators, no shared ticket, no guaranteed connection, an urban timetable you could not verify in advance. Miss the 17:10 and the next is 19:35, home at 21:15.
Sunday and public holidays: the day trip does not exist
On Sundays and public holidays the Lumia service drops to two runs in each direction. From Agrigento at 04:30 (Castelvetrano 06:00) and 15:00 (Castelvetrano 16:50). Back from Castelvetrano at 10:20 (Agrigento 12:15) and 22:00 (Agrigento 23:45).
Read those four times together and the arithmetic is brutal. The only useful outbound run arrives at 16:50 — and the only daytime return left at 10:20. Take the early coach instead and you are in Castelvetrano at six in the morning, before the park opens, committed to the 22:00 return and home at a quarter to midnight. A Sunday day trip from Agrigento to Selinunte by scheduled bus is not practical: it is not a matter of being clever with the connections, the timetable does not contain the combination.
Which matters because Sunday is when people plan day trips, and because entry is free on the first Sunday of every month — the day the site is busiest and the coach least useful. On those dates, and on the four blank days, the options are your own car, a taxi at a fare agreed beforehand, or a pre-booked transfer between Agrigento and Selinunte.
The train: technically possible, practically not
People ask about the train because the map suggests a coastal line. There is none; what the network offers is a long detour inland. Querying the Trenitalia engine for Agrigento Centrale to Castelvetrano on 20 August 2026, the fastest solution was 09:47–16:57: seven hours ten minutes, four changes; the first departure of the day, 08:59, reaches the same 16:57 in 7h58 with three changes. Everything routes via Palermo, and the first leg from Agrigento is flagged treno effettuato con bus — a replacement coach, not a train (lefrecce.it, checked 12 August 2026). Seven hours to reach Castelvetrano, with 14.7 km still to cover at the end.
Castelvetrano's station is perfectly alive; it simply faces the wrong way. From Palermo Centrale the journey takes 2h34 to 2h57 with a change at Piraineto (sample departures on 20 August 2026: 10:12, 14:12, 17:12, 20:12 — same source and check date). Opening times and last entry: the number that picks your coach
The opening hour moves with the season. From 1 May to 14 September the park opens at 08:00; from 15 September to 4 October, from 29 March to 30 April and from 26 October to 28 March, at 09:00. Closing is always given as at sunset, never as a clock time (official opening hours, Regione Siciliana, checked 12 August 2026).
Last admission in 2026, from the official ticketing channel: 15:30 from 1 January to 11 March, 16:30 from 12 to 28 March, 18:00 from 29 March to 30 April, 19:00 from 1 May to 14 September, 18:00 to 4 October (CoopCulture, checked 12 August 2026).
Now hold that against the coach timetable, because this is where a winter trip goes wrong. In winter the ticket desk closes at 15:30. The Lumia run leaving Agrigento at 13:10 arrives in Castelvetrano at 15:10 — 14.7 km from the gate, twenty minutes on the clock, an urban bus still to find. You will not get in, and the 16:00 departure is useless for the same reason for most of the year. In high summer the 19:00 last entry is generous, but closing follows the light: aim to be through the gate by mid-afternoon, which means the 08:00 or the 10:30 from Agrigento.
Tickets: two official prices, and both are correct
You will find two different figures for the same site, and neither is wrong. The Regione Siciliana page lists the archaeological area of Selinunte at €14.00 full and €7.00 reduced. On CoopCulture, the official sales channel, the 2026 ticket is from €17.00 full, because it includes the exhibition Pericolo Estinzione running to 31 December 2026; the reduced ticket is €10.00 for EU citizens aged 18 to 25 and FAI members, entry is free under 18 and free on the first Sunday of every month. Bookings on 0923 1990030, every day from 9 to 17 (checked 12 August 2026).
Two products, not a contradiction: check which one you are paying for at the moment you pay. With a car, Cave di Cusa — the quarry where the columns of Selinunte were cut — is the natural pairing.
Inside the park: 270 hectares, and no shuttle you can book
Size is the operative fact of the visit. The park covers about 270 hectares and is counted among the largest archaeological sites in the Mediterranean (CoopCulture, secondary source, checked 12 August 2026): separate hills with a valley between them, the eastern temples, the acropolis, the sanctuaries. You cross that on foot.
There is an internal shuttle from Piazzale Iole Bovio Marconi at €5.00 per person return, but read the official product first: it is reserved for groups and schools, minimum 15 and maximum 50 passengers, entrance ticket bought separately (CoopCulture, checked 12 August 2026). A couple or a family of four cannot book it: arrive as an individual visitor and you plan the day on your legs.
We are deliberately not giving you a walking distance between the eastern hill and the acropolis: automatic routing goes round the public roads outside the fence and returns a number with no relation to the paths inside. Take the park's own map at the ticket desk — with water and a hat from May to September.
When you do not need a private transfer
We sell private transfers, and we would rather you took the coach than bought something you do not need. Take the bus if:
- There are one or two of you, travelling Monday to Friday, with light bags. The 08:00 from Piazza Rosselli works, and the fare is per person: for a solo traveller nothing comes close on price.
- Your day has slack in it — a missed connection costs you a coffee, not a flight.
- You already have a rental car. One drive, no timetable at all — nothing here beats your own keys. We will not tell you where to park, because no official source publishes it: check the approach on a map and allow a margin in high season.
- You are sleeping in Castelvetrano or Marinella and taking the last stretch at your own pace next morning. With no schedule to keep, the urban bus and a 760-metre walk are easy.

When a car with a driver earns its place
The honest case for booking is not comfort in the abstract. It is specific days and specific loads:
- Sundays and public holidays, two runs each way with no combination that gives you a visit — and New Year's Day, Easter, Ferragosto and Christmas, when the coach does not run at all.
- After 14 September, when the summer timetable expires and the winter edition is not out yet: you cannot plan a connection against a timetable that does not exist.
- Winter afternoons, against a ticket desk that shuts at 15:30 with 14.7 km still to cover.
- Three or more people, since the coach fare is per person and a car is priced per vehicle — and cases, which mean two operators, two stops in Castelvetrano and a walk across town between them.
- Children, or anyone who cannot manage two changes and a walk in the sun.
- Both parks in one day, or Selinunte on the way from Agrigento towards Trapani, Marsala or Palermo, luggage in the boot instead of in your hands.
What a booking gives you is plain: one vehicle from your address in Agrigento to Piazzale Iole Bovio Marconi, a pickup time set on your own schedule, waiting as set out in the booking conditions, and a fixed price confirmed before you pay. What to check on the day you travel
Everything above was verified on 12 August 2026, and Sicilian timetables move with the seasons. Before you commit, check four things:
- The Lumia timetable in force — the one quoted here runs to 14 September 2026 — and your date against the four blank days and the Saturday cuts at 08:00 and 16:00.
- The last-entry time for your date, and when the sun sets, since closing follows the light.
- The Castelvetrano–Marinella urban bus, on 0923 1990030 or locally: no timetable is published that we could verify.
- Which ticket you are buying: the €14 park ticket, or the CoopCulture one from €17 with the exhibition included.
