Quick answer — leaving Pozzallo ferry port
- Nothing public leaves from the quay. The railway station is 1.9 km away; the AST coaches leave from stops in the town, and the Padre Pio stop has been suspended since June 2026, moved to viale Europa.
- Ships dock in two windows only: early morning (06:45–09:15) or evening (18:45–19:45). No afternoon arrivals; the crossing is timetabled at 1h45.
- Catania Airport by bus: AST direct, 2h20 scheduled, around €8–10. Last departure from viale Europa 18:00 on the weekday we sampled, 19:00 on Sunday.
- Catania by train: never direct — 2h34 to 5h42, always with a change. Comiso Airport (CIY): roughly 55 km and no direct public link at all — no bus, no train; the public itineraries that do work take about 1h40 with at least one change, three times a day.
- Within 35 km of the quay: four of the eight UNESCO baroque towns of the Val di Noto — Scicli, Modica, Noto and Ragusa Ibla.

The Crossing Is the Easy Part
Malta to Pozzallo is operated by Virtu Ferries and by nobody else: the route selector in the operator’s booking engine holds exactly two options. Nor is there a bookable direct ferry from Malta to Catania, whatever the aggregators imply. The ships are large — the M/V Saint John Paul II carries 900 passengers and 167 cars — and Pozzallo handled 479,226 passengers in 2025.
Fix one number before planning a connection: 1 hour 45 minutes. The corporate site advertises a «crossing time of 90 minutes» — sailing time at 38–39 knots, not the number on your ticket. Every sailing we sampled across 28 days and four seasons was timetabled at 1h45. The sea leg works. What nobody writes about is the two kilometres after it.
Most Arrivals Land After the Last Bus
Virtu docks its ships in two windows and no others: early morning, between 06:45 and 09:15, and evening, between 18:45 and 19:45. Cross them against the real bus and train departures and the picture is uncomfortable.
| You dock at | What is actually running |
|---|---|
| 06:45, weekday | The best of the three common weekday arrivals, but tight: allowing twenty to forty minutes to clear the terminal, you have minutes rather than margin for the 07:30 to Catania Airport from viale Europa. Workable only with light luggage or a lift to the stop. The 06:50 train to Modica and Ragusa leaves five minutes after docking, 1.9 km away — treat it as gone. |
| 09:15, weekday | Bus to Catania Airport 09:30, from a stop in the town: fifteen minutes. Next one 11:30. Next train towards Ragusa and Modica 11:04. Close to two hours’ wait. |
| 19:45, weekday | The last bus to Catania Airport left viale Europa at 18:00. The 20:21 train to Syracuse is 36 minutes after docking, 1.9 km away. Then only the 21:42 to Scicli and Modica. Catania or Taormina: nothing until morning. |
| 08:15, Sunday | The 08:24 train and the 08:30 bus are both impossible on foot. Next Syracuse train 10:24 — two hours nine minutes. |
| 19:15, Sunday | The 19:00 bus from viale Europa has gone. The 19:20 train to Ragusa is unreachable. The 20:24 to Syracuse is reachable on foot, but only just: about an hour after docking, against twenty to twenty-five minutes of walking. Catania: nothing. |
| 06:45, Saturday out of season | Often the only sailing of the day, and we did not sample an out-of-season Saturday: check the AST planner for your date before you count on a coach. |
Read the middle rows again. The 09:15 and the 19:45 arrivals both put you on the quay when the last useful onward departure has either gone or leaves in fifteen minutes, from a stop you cannot walk to in fifteen minutes. Between them, those two cover two of the three common weekday arrivals; in winter the second morning sailing disappears altogether. It is nobody’s failure: the two systems were never timetabled against each other, because the port is not a bus station.

The Sailing Pattern, Not a Timetable
We read 28 individual days across four seasons out of the booking engine, and any fixed timetable printed in a guide would be wrong within weeks. What is stable is the shape. Two to three sailings a day per direction on summer weekdays, one or two on Sunday. Saturday is the thin day — out of season we found Saturdays with a single sailing each way. Arrivals cluster into two windows, morning and evening; we found no afternoon arrival at all. Winter pushes the first departure from 05:00 to 06:00 and deletes the second morning sailing, and the evening Malta–Pozzallo run vanishes from winter weekends altogether.
Build the day around the pattern, then confirm your date on book.virtuferries.com. Fares come out of the booking engine per date and per vehicle, so any flat ferry price online is a guess. Pattern checked 14 August 2026.
Where the Ship Docks, and What the Terminal Has
Ships berth on the southern side of the commercial port, in Contrada Raganzino. The passenger building — the Stazione Marittima, Pozzallo Ferry Terminal in English — is a 1,744 m² hall opened on 7 February 2020, with a waiting room and a bar. The terminal description also mentions a baggage service, but the operator’s own FAQ states that there is no left-luggage storage at the port. The operator keeps two offices: the booking office in town at Largo dei Vespri Siciliani 70, on +39 0932 811811, open weekdays 09:00–19:00 in winter and to 20:00 in summer, Saturdays 09:00–13:00; and the departure office inside the port, on +39 0932 956099, which opens only two hours before a sailing.
Three absences to know about. There is no left luggage — the operator states it in its own FAQ. We found no source confirming a taxi rank staffed for every arrival; taxis do work the port, but at 19:45 on a Tuesday in January you do not want that to be the plan. And there is no stop of any kind at the quay: neither the AST nor the Trenitalia system contains a «Pozzallo Porto», because none exists.

The Station Is 1.9 km Away, and Six Trains a Day Run in Each Direction
Pozzallo station sits on Via Leonardo da Vinci, 1.9 km from the port by road — four minutes in a car, twenty to twenty-five on foot with cases. Twenty-five minutes is not a long walk; it is a long walk at 19:45 in November, towards a train you can already tell will not wait.
The line is the Syracuse–Modica–Ragusa–Gela route: not electrified, worked entirely by diesel Regionale units. Westbound, towards Scicli, Modica and Ragusa, trains left at 06:50, 11:04, 15:59, 16:51 and 18:44 on the Monday we checked, plus a 21:42 that goes only as far as Scicli and Modica: Scicli 20–24 minutes, Modica 33–37, Ragusa 58 minutes to 1h07 for €5.50. Eastbound, for Noto and Syracuse, 05:32, 06:24, 09:44, 15:41, 17:16 and 20:21, Noto 31–51 minutes out. Two details matter: the 09:44 and the 11:04 ran as replacement buses that day, one in each direction; and Sunday is a different railway, a clean two-hourly pattern, Syracuse 08:24 through 20:24, Ragusa 09:20 through 19:20. Six departures a direction, with a gap of five to six hours between mid-morning and late afternoon — 09:44 to 15:41 eastbound, 11:04 to 15:59 westbound — is a service built for school and work runs, not for a ship that can unload up to 900 people at once.
Pozzallo to Catania by Train Is Never Direct
If you take one fact from this page, take this one. There is no direct train from Pozzallo to Catania. Every itinerary the Trenitalia system returns involves at least one change, and the journey runs from 2 hours 34 minutes to 5 hours 42 minutes at €11.70–22.10. On the Sunday we sampled the spread was 2h39 to 4h29.
By road, Catania is about 117 km and somewhere between 1h30 and 1h50 of driving. The big journey planners get this corridor wrong too: we found one major aggregator quoting a bus time of 1h45 where the carrier’s own timetable says 2h20. Check the operator, not the aggregator.
AST Buses: The Stop Names, and the One That No Longer Exists
The bus operator here is AST (Azienda Siciliana Trasporti). Interbus and Etna Trasporti, familiar from the Catania–Taormina corridor, are a different matter: neither appears with a Pozzallo stop in any primary source we could check. AST’s system contains exactly three stops with Pozzallo in the name: POZZALLO, POZZALLO-V.EUROPA and POZZALLO P. PIO. Search with those spellings.
And one of them is out of service. After a local police ordinance of 4 June 2026 on roadworks, AST published a notice on 22 June 2026 stating that the Padre Pio stop has been transferred, until works finish, to the viale Europa stop. Guides written before summer 2026 still send people to Padre Pio, where they will watch their bus leave from somewhere else.
Pozzallo to Catania Airport by Bus: It Exists, and It Stops Early
There is a direct public link to Catania Airport: AST runs it through the Val di Noto on a scheduled 2 hours 20 minutes. A typical weekday run reads 06:40 Pozzallo, 07:00 Ispica, 07:20 Rosolini, 07:45 Noto, 08:00 Avola, 09:00 Catania Aeroporto, continuing into the city for 09:20. On the weekday we sampled, across the town stops the system returned departures at 06:10, 06:40, 07:30, 08:40, 09:30, 11:30, 11:40, 13:30, 13:40, 15:30, 16:40 and 18:00 from viale Europa, the last — six to eight distinct runs, since the same coach calls at more than one of them. The 08:40 is the odd one out: the system returns it on the Padre Pio stop, the one now transferred to viale Europa. Which stop you stand at decides your day: from the POZZALLO stop the last useful run left at 16:40. On the Sunday, far fewer: 08:10, 08:30, 15:00, 16:40 and 19:00, again from viale Europa.
The caveats are real. The fare has no primary source: the carrier’s own tariff page returned a 404 when we checked, and the only figure available is a third-party estimate of around €8–10. Departures are from town stops, and those timings are two summer dates on a network revised often. And 2h20 on a coach with a suitcase is a different proposition from 1h30 to 1h50 in a car when yours is the last flight out; the Pozzallo Port to Catania Airport transfer is priced live on the route page by the local operator who would drive it.
Comiso Airport: 55 km, and No Direct Public Link at All
Comiso (CIY) is the closest airport to the Val di Noto, and nothing runs there direct from Pozzallo: no bus, no train. We checked three ways. AST’s system has no airport stop at Comiso among the destinations reachable from Pozzallo — it sells tickets to Comiso town, a 2h05 itinerary with a change at Modica, which is not the same thing. Public itineraries do exist, but only with changes: journey planners, not the carriers, return about 1h40 at best, with at least one change and three a day. The coaches that serve the airport itself, according to a third-party airport listing, not to the airport’s official site, come in from Ragusa, Vittoria and Gela.
The distance is roughly 55 km by road, an hour to seventy minutes of driving. The airport handled 260,438 passengers in 2024, down 14.2 per cent year on year, and its route map is strongly seasonal: year-round flights to Rome, Milan and Turin, with services to France, Poland, Czechia and Albania appearing and vanishing with the summer. An airport that size rewrites its schedule every six months, so check its own site rather than any guide, this one included. For CIY the Pozzallo to Comiso Airport transfer is not a convenience purchase: on this run the only door-to-door options are private ones — a booked transfer, a shared shuttle or a taxi.
Four UNESCO Baroque Towns Within 35 km of the Quay
Here is the thing nobody says about Pozzallo, and it is the best reason to arrive here rather than fly into Catania. The Late Baroque Towns of the Val di Noto were inscribed by UNESCO in 2002: eight towns — Caltagirone, Militello in Val di Catania, Catania, Modica, Noto, Palazzolo Acreide, Ragusa and Scicli — rebuilt after the 1693 earthquake.
Four of those eight are within 35 km of the ferry quay. Scicli is 19.6 km, about 26 minutes. Modica, the chocolate town stacked up both sides of a gorge, is 22.9 km and about 27 minutes. Noto, the golden set-piece, is 32 km and about 41 minutes. Ragusa Ibla, the old town below the new, is 34.1 km and about 37 minutes. That also reframes the Malta day trip: a 09:15 arrival against a 19:30 sailing back is about nine hours ashore, once you allow for disembarkation and the one-hour check-in, or two baroque towns at a civilised pace.
Syracuse and Ortigia: The Best Train on the Line
Of everything reachable from Pozzallo on public transport, Syracuse — Siracusa — is where the train genuinely competes: €7.10 and 1h06 to 1h18, against 56 minutes for the 59.3 km drive, with Ortigia about a twenty-minute walk from the station, or a short bus or taxi ride.
The constraint is frequency: six departures on a weekday, the first at 05:32, and seven on a Sunday, the first at 08:24. AST also runs a coach, roughly two hours via Ispica, Rosolini, Noto and Avola. Both leave from the town, not the port, which brings you back to the walk into town.
Marzamemi and Marina di Ragusa: One Bus a Day, or None
Marzamemi is the clearest gap between what looks reachable on a map and what is reachable in practice. It is a former tuna-fishing village in the comune of Pachino, 35.3 km and about 45 minutes away, built around its tonnara and Palazzo Villadorata. AST runs exactly one bus a day there from Pozzallo, at 14:10, via Portopalo di Capo Passero. One. Miss it, or want to come back the same evening, and there is no public plan B.
Marina di Ragusa, the province’s main summer resort and a 2026 Blue Flag beach, is not on the Pozzallo bus map either — the services that reach it run down from Ragusa, not east from here.
Taormina, Giardini Naxos and Letojanni: Off the Bus Map Entirely
People step off the ship intending to sleep in Taormina that night, so let us be blunt. Taormina does not appear anywhere in AST’s list of destinations reachable from Pozzallo. Nor do Giardini Naxos, at sea level below it, or Letojanni, a few kilometres up the same shoreline.
The public route is: reach Catania first — 2h34 minimum by rail, or 2h40 by AST coach — then a second operator’s coach or train north up the Ionian coast. From a 19:45 arrival that is not a late evening, it is the following day. By road Taormina is about 169 km, roughly 2h10.
Montalbano Country Starts Twenty Minutes from the Ship
If you watched the series, you have already seen this coast. Scicli town hall, on Via Francesco Mormina Penna, is the Vigàta police station: the ground floor holds the set, with the desks of Catarella, Fazio and Montalbano, and the mayor’s room is the Montelusa headquarters. Open every day 10:00–22:00, entry €5, reduced €3, Via F.M. Penna 1 — 19.6 km from the quay.
Punta Secca, in the comune of Santa Croce Camerina, is Marinella: Montalbano’s house stands on the sand beside the Saracen tower and now operates as a guesthouse. It is 38 km and about 54 minutes away, and its season runs roughly April to November. In Ragusa Ibla, 34 km away, the later seasons moved the police station to Piazza Pola. At Sampieri the shell of the Fornace Penna brickworks — built 1909–1912, la Mànnara on screen — stands above the beach; access is free and unrestricted, which is the problem, because the structure is unguarded and unstable. Look at it from the sand, at sunset.
Pozzallo Itself: Two Blue Flag Beaches and a Tower from 1429
Plenty of people treat Pozzallo as a corridor. It is a working town of around 18,958 people, and both its beaches carry a 2026 Blue Flag — Sicily has sixteen in all. Raganzino is the port’s own beach, fine pinkish sand with lidos and free stretches, beside where you docked. Pietre Nere is golden sand and largely unmanaged. Behind them stands Torre Cabrera, a defensive tower dating from 1429 and in military use as late as the Second World War. The 2026 list is dense along this stretch — Maganuco and Marina di Modica, Santa Maria del Focallo at Ispica, Sampieri at Scicli — so you need not go far.
Going Back: Check-In Times and the No-Left-Luggage Problem
Returning is more rule-bound than arriving. Foot passengers must check in one hour before scheduled departure; with a vehicle, ninety minutes. Check-in opens two hours before and closes thirty minutes before departure — that closing time is the one that catches people. Vehicle loading is at the master’s discretion and explicitly not first-come-first-served, so arriving early buys no place in the queue. Club Class buys priority disembarkation, and at your seat you may keep one piece of small hand luggage.
Which brings back the fact that ruins more day trips than any other: there is no left luggage at Pozzallo port. If your ship leaves at 19:30 and you checked out of a Modica hotel at 10:00, the cases are with you all day — up Scicli’s staircases, round Noto’s corso. On the way in, allow twenty to forty minutes between docking and standing outside the terminal, foot passengers first and cars after. No operator publishes a figure; the best public estimate is the ferry company’s own coach schedule, which allows about 2h30 from ship arrival to Catania against 1h30 to 1h50 of driving — forty minutes to an hour for docking, disembarking and getting aboard the coach.
When a Car and Driver Is Worth It, and When It Is Not
BlueKeys does not drive you: a licensed local NCC operator does, and the price on each route page is that operator’s own, live. So there is no reason to talk you out of a €5.50 train. Take the bus when you dock at 06:45 on a weekday, travel light and can be at viale Europa for the 07:30. Take the train later in the morning instead: after the 06:50, which you should treat as gone, the first useful departures are 09:44 eastbound for Noto and Syracuse and 11:04 westbound for Scicli, Modica and Ragusa — both of which ran as replacement buses on the day we sampled. The 06:45 is the best of the three common weekday arrivals, but it is tight: with twenty to forty minutes needed to clear the terminal, you have minutes rather than margin for the 07:30 from viale Europa, so count it workable only with light luggage or a lift to the stop.
A car with a driver earns its keep in a narrow, specific set of cases: the 19:45 arrival, when nothing runs onward to Catania or the Ionian coast until morning; the 09:15 arrival, when the next bus is at 11:30; Comiso Airport, where nothing runs direct; Marzamemi, outside its single 14:10 departure; a flight out of Catania, where 2h20 scheduled plus a walk out to a stop in the town is a lot of variables to stack in front of a gate; three or more people with luggage; and Saturdays out of season, when the single sailing lands into a skeleton timetable. Your driver waits at the terminal, the vehicle is sized to the bags when you book, and the price is fixed at booking rather than negotiated on the quay — pulled live from the operator’s own list, which is why no number is typed into this text.
How We Checked This
Everything here was verified on 14 August 2026 from primary sources: sailing patterns read day by day out of the Virtu Ferries booking engine across 28 dates in four seasons; terminal addresses, office hours, check-in and baggage rules from the operator’s own pages; train times and fares from Trenitalia for a Monday and a Sunday in August 2026; bus times and stop names from AST’s official planner for the same two dates, with the Padre Pio suspension from AST’s notice of 22 June 2026. Road distances and driving times alike are OpenStreetMap routing estimates — approximate rather than official, and the driving times have been widened upwards to allow for August traffic, when the real times on the road are worse.
Where nobody publishes a figure, we say so instead of inventing one: AST’s fare page is offline, no primary source gives a taxi tariff from the port, no operator publishes a typical disembarkation time, and the only figures for public itineraries to Comiso come from journey planners, not from a carrier’s own timetable. Two summer dates are not an annual timetable. Confirm your own date with the carrier before you travel, especially if a flight depends on it.
Docking at 19:45? Book the Road Leg Before You Sail
The evening arrival has no onward public connection towards Catania, Taormina or Comiso airport. A local operator meets you at the terminal, at a price fixed when you book — start with the Pozzallo Port to Catania Airport transfer or the Pozzallo to Comiso Airport transfer.
