What the Alibus Is, and Why It Has Its Own Ticket
The Alibus is the airport shuttle run by AMTS, the company that operates Catania’s city buses. It links Fontanarossa with the centre of the city, and for most people arriving with a cabin bag it is the right way to do this journey: €4.00, no booking, one vehicle from the airport to the streets you actually want.
The airport is close in — Wikipedia puts Fontanarossa 4.3 km southwest of Catania, though the airport operator publishes no distance of its own. What matters more is that Alibus is a dedicated airport service, not a city bus that happens to pass by, which is why it is ticketed separately from the rest of the AMT network. That separation is the thing most passengers get wrong.
Tickets: €4.00, Four Ways to Buy, and One That Does Not Work
The Alibus fare is €4.00. It is not a supplement on top of something else, and it is not the ordinary urban fare. AMTS lists four ways to buy:
- On board, in cash or by payment card
- In the AMT Catania app
- At the AMTS season-ticket office and at AMT resellers — the tobacconists and bars that sell city tickets
- At partner hotels
One good detail: the ticket is valid for 90 minutes from validation, and inside those 90 minutes it also works on every other AMT urban line. If the loop does not drop you at your door, the connecting city bus is already paid for — plenty of people buy a second ticket they did not need.
Now the part that catches people out. Ordinary AMT travel documents are not valid on Alibus. AMTS spells out the exclusions: the standard 90-minute AMT ticket, daily tickets, special and reserved tickets, FCE metro tickets and ordinary AMT season passes. If you spent a week in Catania on a pass and assume it covers the ride back to the airport, it does not.
The relationship runs one way only: the Alibus ticket buys you the city network for 90 minutes, a city ticket does not buy you the Alibus (amts.ct.it/alibus, checked 11 August 2026). AMTS says payment cards are accepted on board but does not state whether contactless tap-to-ride works, so carry cash or buy in the app.
Hours and Frequency: 04:40 to 00:30, Sunday Included
Two independent official sources agree on the span. The AMTS booklet gives the first departure from the airport terminus at 04:40 and the last at 24:30 — booklet notation for 00:30 the following morning. The airport operator says the same in English: «First bus leaves at 04:40 – last bus leaves at 00:30 the next day».
Sunday is not a problem. AMTS publishes a separate holiday booklet, and on this line it lists exactly the same departures, 04:40 to 24:30. Sundays and public holidays run the identical Alibus service — not true of most Sicilian bus routes, and worth knowing when your flight lands on a Sunday evening.
The published frequency and the real frequency differ, in your favour. The airport page says buses run every 25 minutes. The AMTS booklet for the current summer timetable is tighter for most of the day: departures at 08:00, 08:18, 08:36, 08:54, 09:12 and so on, an 18-minute interval that holds until 19:42. The gap widens to 20–25 minutes before 07:40 and again after 20:00. In the middle of the day you do not plan around the Alibus: you clear the terminal, walk out, wait a few minutes.
Both figures are official: 25 minutes is the round number the airport gave on 11 August 2026, 18 minutes is what the current summer booklet schedules.
Finding the Stop at the Airport
This is the second thing people get wrong, and it costs a bus rather than a fare. The Alibus airport terminus is the forecourt in front of the old terminal building — «slargo antistante vecchia aerostazione» in the AMTS route description. It is not the kerb outside the current arrivals hall, where the taxis and private cars are. If you walk out of arrivals, see no bus and conclude the Alibus is not running, you are standing in the wrong place. Allow a few minutes to cover the ground, and if in doubt ask for the old terminal rather than the bus.
The Route: a Circle Through the Centre, Not a Straight Line
Alibus is a circular line — Circolare ALIBUS, Aeroporto–Centro. It leaves the airport, loops through Catania and comes back. There is no inbound and outbound to confuse, but how long your ride takes depends on where on the loop your stop sits.
The published route calls at the Port, Via Dusmet, Piazza dei Martiri, Stazione Centrale, Viale Libertà, Corso Italia, Piazza G. Verga, Viale XX Settembre, Via Etnea, Piazza Stesicoro, Corso Sicilia, Piazza Giovanni XXIII, Via Vittorio Emanuele and Piazza San Placido before returning to the airport.
The only running time AMTS certifies is the one that matters most: Stazione Centrale is reached 15 minutes after departure from the airport, on every departure in the timetable — stated for the whole schedule, not one sample run. For the rest of the loop, Via Etnea and Piazza Stesicoro included, no running time is published, so allow more than fifteen minutes. Nor does any official source give a walking distance from an Alibus stop to Piazza Duomo: check your accommodation against the stop list on a map rather than trusting a round number from a forum.
One booklet note is easy to miss. Departures marked with an X do not enter the port area and use the external road network instead: the runs from 04:40 to 06:30 and from 22:20 to 24:30. If your stop is Via Dusmet or the Port at either end of the day, that run is not calling where you expect.
The Hole in the Night: 00:30 to 04:40
Between the last Alibus at 00:30 and the first at 04:40 there is no bus to Catania city centre at all. Not a reduced service, not a night line with another number. Nothing.
The one AMTS service that does call at the airport in those hours is the circular 524S, and it does not help you. It connects the airport arrivals area with the Catania Aeroporto Fontanarossa railway station and the park-and-ride car park, every 10 minutes from 04:30 to 22:40. It also runs overnight, roughly every 15 minutes from 23:00 to 04:15, but those night runs are asterisked in the booklet precisely because they do not call at the railway station. Overnight, 524S shuttles between the airport and a car park.
So the picture for a 02:00 landing is short, and thinner than most pages admit. No operator and no public body publishes anything for that window: not a night bus, and not a taxi or shuttle guaranteed to be waiting. The airport does list taxi ranks at the exit of the Arrivals level and an official radio taxi number, but neither is published with night hours, so at 02:00 a taxi is a reasonable hope rather than a plan. When the Alibus Is Not the Right Choice
Most of this article exists to help you take the bus, because for most arrivals it is the sensible answer. Five situations where it is not:
- You land in the 00:30–04:40 window. Not a matter of waiting longer: there is no bus at all.
- You are three or more. The €4.00 is per person and the total climbs with the party, while a car is priced for the car — and you still finish on foot from a stop on the loop with the bags. The arithmetic changes, and so does the walk.
- Luggage. AMTS publishes no luggage allowance for Alibus, and a buggy plus two large cases is a bad fit for a boarding door in August.
- Your address is not on the loop. Staying outside the circle, up towards Etna or along the coast, the €4.00 saving disappears into a second leg and a taxi at the end.
- Very early departures. The first Alibus leaves the airport at 04:40, which tells you nothing about when it passes your stop in the city. For a flight boarding at first light, work backwards from the booklet — and if the numbers do not fit, book a car rather than hope.
Outside those five, take the bus: buy the ticket in the app while you wait for your case, and walk out to the old terminal forecourt.
The Taxi Rank, and What the Fares Actually Are
If you do need a taxi, most likely because you landed in the night gap, here is what is published and what is not.
The taxi ranks are at the exit of the Arrivals level. Licensed Catania taxis are white, carry a TAXI sign on the roof and display a licence number on the doors, at the rear and inside the vehicle. The airport warns in writing that any other vehicle waiting at the exit may be driven by someone without a regular licence and may charge a fare higher than, or different from, the one set by the Comune di Catania; ask about the fare before boarding. Complaints go to trasporto.pubblico@comune.catania.it quoting the CP Taxi licence number, and the official radio taxi number is +39 095 330966 (aeroporto.catania.it, checked 11 August 2026).
On fares, be careful with what you read online. From 1 July 2026 the Comune di Catania introduced a fixed fare of €27.00 for Piazza Duomo–Aeroporto Vincenzo Bellini and Stazione Centrale–Aeroporto Vincenzo Bellini, alongside an updated meter: €4.00 initial charge, €1.60 per kilometre, €7.00 minimum fare, €26.00 per hour of waiting. A separate «Taxi by night» flat fare of €12.00 for up to four passengers applies within the city centre between 20:00 and 05:00 — a city-centre fare, not an airport fare, and the two get confused.
Two caveats. The package is experimental and expires on 31 December 2026. And the figures come from Sicilian press reporting of the Giunta comunale decision — Balarm, NewSicilia and CataniaToday, all checked 11 August 2026 — because the Comune’s own tariff document is not currently reachable online. Three consistent outlets is decent evidence, not a published tariff. Ask at the rank before you get in.
The Train Instead: the Airport Has Its Own Station
Catania Airport has its own railway station, Catania Aeroporto Fontanarossa, which the airport operator describes as about 600 metres from the terminal on a signed pedestrian path; the Italian-language Wikipedia entry on the station puts it around 700 metres in a straight line and the shuttle transfer at roughly three minutes, checked 11 August 2026. That second pair of figures is Wikipedia, not the operator: useful for scale, not something to time a connection on.
That shuttle is the same AMTS 524S: every 10 minutes from 04:30 to 22:40, quoted by the airport at €1.00. Trenitalia prices the bus leg of its integrated ticket — the Fontanarossa Airlink — at €1.40, sold only as part of a combined train-plus-bus ticket, never separately. Two official figures for two different products, so read the machine rather than assuming.
Here is the trap the airport flags itself: to have the shuttle included you must book to the destination «Catania Aeroporto Fontanarossa Bus». A ticket bought to «Catania Aeroporto Fontanarossa» without the word Bus does not include it — two nearly identical station names, one of which leaves you paying twice or walking with your luggage. The Airlink sells through all Trenitalia channels — website, app, station machines, ticket offices, PUNTOLIS and Mooney — and stops outside terminal arrivals and at the platform in front of the station (aeroporto.catania.it, Trenitalia, checked 11 August 2026).
For the city centre itself Alibus is simpler: one vehicle, no connection to miss. The train earns its place when you are going on somewhere else in Sicily the same day, because it puts you on the rail network without crossing the city first. Which places that actually reaches, and how long it takes, is not something any source we checked publishes for this station — look up your own date on Trenitalia before you build a day around it.
Going Back: Catching the Alibus to the Airport
Because Alibus is circular, the return is the same line rather than a mirror image, and the same rules apply: €4.00 on board, in the app, at a reseller or at a partner hotel — and your city pass will not do.
Plan the departure end with a margin. The only running time AMTS guarantees is airport to Stazione Centrale in 15 minutes; going the other way you are joining the loop somewhere along its course, in city traffic, on a run that may or may not be entering the port area depending on the hour. Take the departure before the one that theoretically works. If your flight boards early enough that the arithmetic gets uncomfortable, book a car the day before instead of improvising at 05:00.
