Catania Arrivals: What Closes First, and What Never Closes

Why this airport, and when it is the right one

This is a well connected airport that empties out in a particular order, and the order is what matters when you book. It has a railway station of its own, six hundred metres away on foot or a ten-minute shuttle: that shuttle keeps circling all night, but after twenty to eleven its runs stop calling at the station at all. The coach into the city keeps going until half past midnight. The intercity coaches leave from the Terminal A side, where their ticket desks are, and the airport names the companies without publishing a single departure time for any of them. And underneath all of it sits the one rule that decides how a private pickup actually works here: the arrivals lane is closed to private cars, and no meeting point for private drivers is published anywhere — so the exact spot has to come from your driver, in writing, before you land. The table above is the honest measure of how far the road reaches from this terminal, because it only contains journeys an operator has actually priced.

What happens when you land

Arrivals are on the ground floor of Terminal A, and the taxi ranks are at the exit from that arrivals level; on a phone booking the taxis instead load outside the departures ramp, one floor up. The rule that matters for anyone being picked up by a private car is published in a single line: the arrivals lane is closed to private vehicles. The Alibus coach stops at Terminal A, and the shuttle for the railway station leaves from outside arrivals on the office-tower side.

There is no meeting area published for private drivers. The only point the airport calls a meeting point belongs to the radio-taxi service booked by phone, and it is on the departures ramp on the first floor — not where you come out. Since the arrivals lane is closed to private cars, “I’ll be right outside” cannot be the whole instruction: the exact spot has to reach you from your driver with the booking confirmation. What does exist on the arrivals floor is a staffed help desk, open from 6am to 10pm.

Tickets are sold in several different places. For the Alibus coach: on board in cash or by card, through the AMT Catania app, at the operator’s season-ticket office and resellers, and at partner hotels. For the intercity coaches the airport lists ticket desks on the Terminal A side, plus a SAIS ticket office outside the terminal building, open every day from a quarter past six in the morning until a quarter past midnight. The combined train-and-shuttle ticket is sold by the railway operator, at stations or online — and the airport warns that a rail ticket bought to the airport station alone does not include the shuttle.

Luggage is included in the Alibus fare — an explicit exception to the operator’s own rules, which on every other city line allow one small bag free, up to two larger ones only by paying an extra ticket each, and nothing at all above 80×45×25cm or 20kg. In a taxi the fare covers up to four bags, with a supplement per extra piece. Trolleys in the terminal work on a returnable coin deposit.

If the flight slips, or lands at night

The terminal itself is open around the clock, and the things that leave it close in sequence. The help desk in arrivals stops at 10pm. Twenty to eleven is when the shuttle stops calling at the railway station — the ring keeps running all night towards the car park, but its night runs are marked in the operator’s own timetable as not stopping at the station, so the train ceases to be a way out well before the airport goes quiet. The last coach into the city leaves at half past midnight: the airport’s service charter says one in the morning, but the company that runs it prints half past midnight in both its current timetables, and on its own service the company is the one to believe. After that there is no published departure of any kind until twenty to five in the morning. A road journey, which has no last departure, is the only thing that does not depend on where in that sequence your flight actually lands.

A late arrival does not move where you are met — it moves what is still moving around you. Scheduled services keep their timetable and stop when it ends; a road journey has no last departure. Knowing which of the two you are relying on before you board is worth more than anything you can improvise at one in the morning.

The airport is unusually explicit about this. Authorised taxis are white, with TAXI on the roof, a meter, and a licence number shown on the doors, at the back and inside the car. Any other vehicle waiting by the exit, it warns, may be driven by someone without a proper licence, and may charge something other than the municipal fare — so ask the staff on duty what the fare will be before getting in. If something goes wrong, note the licence number on the door and complain to the municipal transport office. That warning is about the kerb, not about a booking: it describes vehicles touting for a fare on the spot, which is the opposite of a car that arrives with a named driver and a written confirmation. On the fares themselves, the city’s own tariff page has been returning an error since this was checked, but the airport’s 2026 service charter publishes starting fares for the nearby zones and for the historic centre, along with the supplements per extra passenger and per bag beyond the fourth — that document, and the staff on duty, are where a figure gets checked.
