Quick answer — Agrigento to Ragusa Ibla

Why nobody runs a direct service
Agrigento and Ragusa are about 138 kilometres apart along the southern coast: by road, around 2 hours 40 minutes on our OSRM routing figure of 13 August 2026, with no traffic and no stops in it. Not far by Sicilian standards — but a distance no single carrier covers.
Two bus networks meet at Gela and stop there. Autolinee SAL is the carrier that matters in the province of Agrigento, and its booking system serves sixteen places — Porto Empedocle, Agrigento, Licata, Palma di Montechiaro, Gela, Punta Raisi and Comiso airports among them. Ragusa is not one. AST runs the buses around Ragusa, and its planner lists 420 localities including Comiso, Gela, Ragusa and Marina di Ragusa. Agrigento is not one either. Two networks, one shared town, no through service.
One loose thread, because you will find it if you search in Italian: the Comune di Ragusa's page on extra-urban buses lists SAL as the carrier for the relation "Ragusa, Gela, Agrigento", with a phone number, 0922 596490. That page and SAL's own sales system disagree, and municipal pages age quietly. To test whether something exists that is simply not sellable online, that number and SAL's office line, 0922 401360, are where to ask — but do not build a travel day on it.

The bus that works: Agrigento to Gela, then the train
This is what most independent travellers end up doing, and it is fine if your day is free. SAL runs six buses a day from Agrigento to Gela, leaving Piazzale Rosselli — AGRIGENTO P. ROSSELLI in the timetable — at 06:30, 08:00, 08:45, 13:30, 15:30 and 19:15. The journey takes 1 hour 45 minutes and costs €6.50. Tickets are sold on SAL's site with an assigned seat and live availability, worth doing in August rather than turning up and hoping.
From Gela you have two ways onward, and only one is real. The AST bus from Gela to Ragusa is a trap. There is exactly one a day: Gela 06:00, Vittoria 06:40, Comiso 07:00, Ragusa 07:30. Ask the AST planner for any later departure — 08:00, 11:00, 14:00, 17:00, 20:00 — and the answer is "nessun itinerario trovato". That 06:00 is unreachable from Agrigento, where the first bus of the day leaves at 06:30. It works only if you slept in Gela.
The train from Gela to Ragusa is the one to use: six departures a day at 07:25, 13:30, 15:08, 18:18, 18:51 and 20:52, 1h05 to 1h14 of running time, €5.60.
Now the part no timetable does for you: pairing them. SAL publishes a running time rather than arrivals, so the figures below are our arithmetic on official departures — planning estimates, not printed times.
- 06:30 reaches Gela around 08:15. The 07:25 train has gone, the next is 13:30. Five hours in Gela.
- 08:45 arrives around 10:30, then the 13:30 train puts you in Ragusa around 14:40. The earliest arrival we can verify.
- 13:30 arrives around 15:15 — and the 15:08 train left seven minutes earlier. Right on a map, wrong on the platform. Next train 18:18.
- 15:30 arrives around 17:15, then the 18:18 train reaches Ragusa around 19:25 — an hour of waiting, the tightest connection of the day.
- 19:15 arrives around 21:00, after the last train at 20:52. Dead end.
Two tickets, €12.10 in total, four to eight hours depending on the pair. What you do not get is protection: SAL does not hold a train, Trenitalia does not know about your bus, and a coach twenty minutes late costs you the connection and, on some pairings, the day.

The other SAL bus: Agrigento to Comiso airport
SAL's long line — Porto Empedocle, Agrigento, Palma di Montechiaro, Licata, Gela, Comiso airport — looks like the answer, because it crosses into the province of Ragusa. Departures from Agrigento P. Rosselli at 08:00, 13:30 and 19:15, arriving at Comiso airport at 10:30, 16:00 and 21:45: two and a half hours, €8.80 one way.
Then it stops being documented. AST's planner contains the town of Comiso, not the airport, and the two are not the same place. The airport's bus page names three carriers at the terminal — Tumino (+39 0932 623184), Autolinee Giamporcaro (quoted 05:00 to 22:30) and SAL (+39 0922 401360) — but Giamporcaro's site was down when we checked, and no official page gave a time, a fare or a carrier for the last leg into Ragusa. We will not invent one.
What AST does publish is Comiso town to Ragusa: five departures at 07:00, 11:05, 15:20, 18:20 and 21:50, thirty minutes. Landing at 10:30 puts you close to the 11:05 — if you can cover the gap between terminal and town, which no source we could open describes. A gamble with a suitcase, not a plan. And the 19:15 deserves a flat warning: it arrives at 21:45, at a small airport, at night, with no verified onward service.

The train: three solutions a day, all of them in the afternoon
There is no direct train, and no version of this journey with fewer than one change. Trenitalia's sales system returns three solutions in the whole day.
The fastest is Agrigento Centrale 14:38 → Canicattì 15:32, then Canicattì 17:50 → Ragusa 19:57: 5 hours 19 minutes, one change, €14.30 in second class, a price we confirmed for two separate dates, 15 October and 18 November 2026. Note what sits in the middle — two hours eighteen on the platform at Canicattì. The last solution of the day leaves at 15:22, takes two changes via Roccapalumba-Alia and Caltanissetta Xirbi, runs 6h35 and costs €20.00. Before 14:38 there is nothing at all: if you wanted to be in Ibla for lunch, the railway cannot do it.
The bottleneck is the first fifty minutes. Agrigento Centrale to Canicattì has three services a day — 13:15, 14:38, 19:12 — taking 44 to 54 minutes for €5.50, and the 13:15 forms part of no Ragusa itinerary Trenitalia sells. Everything downstream hangs on those three.
One more thing catches people who booked a train and expected a train. Until 1 October 2026 the Agrigento–Canicattì leg is operated by replacement buses: the timetable says "treno effettuato con bus" and names services such as PA300, PA306 and PA314. You board a coach with a rail ticket. From 2 October 2026 the three runs revert to Regionale trains 21562, 21566 and 21556. Travelling this summer, plan for a bus. Canicattì to Ragusa alone is €8.40, minimum 2h07; Gela to Ragusa €5.60.

Sunday, and why it breaks this journey
Sicilian rural transport thins out on Sundays. Here it does more than thin out. The SAL line towards Comiso airport does not run on Sundays at all: we queried SAL's sales system for Sunday 23 August, Sunday 6 September and Sunday 13 September 2026 and got zero services each time, while Monday to Saturday the same three departures appear. The single AST bus from Gela to Ragusa does not run on Sundays either — for Sunday 23 August 2026 the planner answers "nessun itinerario trovato".
We did not verify the Agrigento–Gela departures for a Sunday and will not guess: query SAL's system for your own date, and note that the rail solutions above were priced on two weekdays. Sunday changes the last leg too — the urban service to Ibla becomes line 1 Festivo, 08:00 to 21:00, hourly.
Ragusa station is not Ragusa Ibla
This detail ruins more arrivals than any missed connection. Ragusa is two towns: the modern one on the plateau, and Ibla — the baroque one, the one Montalbano's viewers recognise — on the ridge below. The railway station is in Ragusa Superiore, at coordinates 36.91927, 14.725677 in RFI's own record. Getting off the train does not mean you have arrived.
Ragusa Ibla does have a station, still there as an installation: code S12416, at 36.93133, 14.750993. It is closed to passengers — it lost all regular traffic in the early 1990s, its passenger building is now a restaurant, and it sits about 1.8 km from Ibla's baroque centre anyway. It reopened seasonally for the "Treni del Barocco" in the summers of 2020 and 2021; whether anything runs today, no official source confirms. Treat the dot on the map as scenery.
Arriving by bus, note the change of address: since 18 August 2025 AST no longer stops in via Zama. The stop is the new Terminal Bus Scalo Merci, via Scalo Merci at the corner of via Archimede, opposite the church of the Sacra Famiglia, bays 8 and 9. Guidebooks printed before that send you to the wrong place.
And a gap we could not fill: no official source publishes the walking distance or time from Ragusa station to piazza Duomo or the Giardino Ibleo. Open a map against your real address.

The last mile down to Ibla: bus 11, bus 33, or the stairs
The Comune di Ragusa publishes a leaflet for exactly this problem, titled "Lascia l'auto, immergiti nel Barocco" — leave the car, go down into the baroque town on foot or by bus.
By urban bus. Three AST services connect the upper town with Ibla: line 11 (Monday to Saturday, 06:40 to 20:40), line 33 (Monday to Saturday, 07:00 to 21:00) and line 1 Festivo (Sundays and holidays, 08:00 to 21:00). All three run every 60 minutes, take 25 minutes, and set you down at the Giardini Iblei, at the far end of Ibla — a good place to start walking back through it.
The detailed line 11 timetable has a catch. Departures are at 6.40, 7.40, then at forty past each hour from 11.40 to 19.40 — and the 8.40, 9.40 and 10.40 runs go only as far as Cimitero Ibla, not the Giardini Iblei. Mid-morning is precisely when someone who left Agrigento at dawn arrives. Returns leave the Giardini Iblei at five past the hour, 7.05 to 20.05.
Two caveats. That timetable has been in force since 4 October 2021 and still names "Nodo Zama" as the departure point — the stop superseded by the August 2025 terminal move. Whether lines 11 and 33 now call at the station, at the new terminal, or both, no source we could open states: ask when you arrive. AST publishes the urban fare nowhere we could find; tickets go through the AST Biglietteria app or on board with a surcharge, so carry coins.
On foot. The Comune signposts two stair routes down: the scalinata di Santa Maria delle Scale, from via 24 Maggio at the corner of Corso Mazzini to piazza Repubblica, and the scalinata del Carmine, from piazza Carmine to largo S. Paolo. Both are the walk that makes Ragusa famous, and both are stairs with no lifts. Going down at nine in the morning with a daypack is a pleasure. Coming up at three in the afternoon in August with two wheeled cases is what people remember for the wrong reason.
By taxi, Ragusa's municipal service answers on 0932 1832. Staying on the coast, Tumino's TPL line 50 — Ragusa, Marina di Ragusa, Punta Secca, Santa Croce Camerina — stops at both Ibla and Ragusa Superiore; tickets at biglietti.tuminobus.it.

Driving it yourself
With a hire car this is a straightforward drive: about 138 kilometres, around 2 hours 40 minutes on our OSRM figure of 13 August 2026. That number contains no traffic and no stops, and the road crosses Gela and the Vittoria plain, which in summer carry holiday traffic and farm vehicles in the same lane. Add a margin rather than believing it — and plan the end, not the middle: the Comune's own campaign asks visitors to leave the car and reach Ibla by bus or on foot.
When you do not need a private transfer
We sell private transfers, and we would rather you kept the money than bought one you do not need. Take the bus and train if:
- You are one or two people with a small case each. €12.10 in tickets against any car is not a close contest, and no comfort argument changes it.
- Your day is genuinely free. The 08:45 bus and the 13:30 train put you in Ragusa around 14:40, with nothing in between but Gela. If that does not bother you, it should not bother us.
- You are travelling Monday to Saturday, when both networks run their normal service.
- You are staying in Ragusa Superiore near the station and happy on stairs. The descent into Ibla is one of the best short walks in Sicily.
- You are heading for Comiso airport anyway. €8.80 and one vehicle, Monday to Saturday, is a deal no private car beats.
If that is you, book the SAL seat online and keep coins for the urban bus.
When a car with a driver earns its place
The honest case is narrow, and it is about the calendar and the load, not the distance:
- You are travelling on a Sunday. The SAL Comiso line and the AST bus from Gela both stop, and what is left must be verified date by date.
- You need to be in Ragusa in the morning. Public transport cannot do it: the earliest verifiable arrival is mid-afternoon, and the railway cannot leave Agrigento before 14:38.
- You are three or more with luggage. The tickets are still cheaper and we will not pretend otherwise. What you buy is the removal of two boardings, hours in Gela, and a stair descent at the end.
- Children, a pushchair, or anyone who cannot manage stairs. Ibla's two signposted routes are staircases without lifts, and the urban bus runs hourly.
- You are combining the Valley of the Temples with Ibla in one day. A normal request, and an impossible one by timetable.
What a private transfer from Agrigento to Ragusa gives you is one vehicle from address to address, a fixed price confirmed before you pay, luggage counted per vehicle in advance, and a pickup set around the time you actually need to leave rather than around three bus departures. What it does not give you is a fare that competes with €12.10.
What to check on the day you travel
Everything here was verified on 12 August 2026 on official carrier systems, and Sicilian timetables move. Check four things:
- Your actual date in SAL's booking system, not a weekday you checked earlier. Sunday and holiday services are the ones that vanish.
- The Gela train departures against your bus arrival — nobody protects that connection.
- Whether the Agrigento–Canicattì leg is still a replacement bus. It reverts to trains on 2 October 2026, under the same train number.
- Which side of Ragusa you are sleeping on, and where the urban bus to Ibla now leaves from — the published timetable still names Nodo Zama, superseded in August 2025.
