Option 1: the two buses, €15,40
This is the cheapest way and the one most guides describe. The Curreri Viaggi coach leaves from outside arrivals and reaches Sorrento in 75 to 90 minutes for €13. In Sorrento you walk to the SITA stop and take the coast bus to Positano, a €2,40 ticket that you buy before boarding, because drivers do not sell them.
Counting the wait between the two, plan for three hours. The second leg is the pretty one, along the cliff road, and in summer it is also the crowded one: the bus fills in Sorrento and people stand.
Option 2: Alibus, train, then bus
The other public route goes Alibus to Napoli Centrale, Circumvesuviana train to Sorrento, then the same SITA bus. It costs a few euro more than option one, adds a change, and puts your luggage on a commuter train with no racks. It makes sense only if you are already going into Naples first.
Option 3: private transfer, from €156
A driver meets you in arrivals and drives to your address in Positano in about an hour and a half. The price is per vehicle, not per person: from €156 for a sedan up to three passengers and from €180 for a minivan up to eight. Tolls and parking are included, the flight number is tracked, and the fare is the same at any hour.
For two people it costs more than the buses. For four with suitcases it is usually the same money once you count four bus tickets twice over, and it saves the change in Sorrento.

Option 4: the ferry, and why it rarely works from the airport
There are seasonal boats along the coast, but none of them leaves from the airport. You would first reach the port of Naples, then sail, then climb from the beach to your hotel. In April to October it is a lovely way to arrive; with an evening flight it is not an option at all, because the last boats leave in the early afternoon.
Which one to choose
Two people, light bags, daytime arrival: the buses. You will pay €30,80 for the pair and spend an afternoon arriving.
Family or four adults: the transfer, for the same reason every time. Four tickets plus the change with suitcases beats the saving.
Flight landing after 20:00: the transfer, because the SITA service thins out in the evening and a missed connection in Sorrento means a taxi anyway.
The part about Positano nobody mentions
Positano is built on a cliff and closed to through traffic in the centre. Whatever you take, the last part is on foot, down steps. Tell your driver the name of your hotel and not just the street: drivers who work the coast know which drop off point leaves you with twenty steps instead of two hundred.
