The one mistake you must not make

The one mistake you must not make

The Circumvesuviana line from Naples to Sorrento has two stops with “Pompei” in the name. Confusing them is the single most common error first-time visitors make — and it costs at least 40 minutes of unplanned walking or backtracking. Memorise the right one before you board:

Stop nameWhere it drops youFor the ruins?
Pompei Scavi–Villa dei Misteri50 m from the Porta Marina ruins gateYES — get off here
Pompei SantuarioModern Pompei town centre, 1.7 km from Porta Anfiteatro (the side entrance)No — wrong line, wrong town side

“Pompei Santuario” sits on the FS Trenitalia Napoli–Salerno regional line, not the Circumvesuviana — so most travellers won’t hit it accidentally. But it’s the destination Google Maps sometimes suggests for “Pompei”, and the city it’s in is the same. Always type “Pompei Scavi” into transit apps, not just “Pompei”.

What the Circumvesuviana is

The Circumvesuviana is the narrow-gauge commuter railway operated by EAV (Ente Autonomo Volturno) that loops around Mount Vesuvius. The Napoli–Sorrento line (L1) is the one you want for Pompei. It connects Napoli Garibaldi with the seaside town of Sorrento in just over 70 minutes, calling at 34 stations along the way — with Pompei Scavi at stop 22.

For visitors, this line is the cheapest, most direct public transport to the ruins. For locals on the coast, it’s the daily commute. That tension — tourist artery + working commuter train — defines the experience. Expect crowded carriages at peak hours, basic seating, and air conditioning only on the newer rolling stock introduced in 2022–2024. At €3.30 for a 35-minute ride that drops you at the very gate of Pompeii, the value/comfort tradeoff is firmly on the value side.

Buying your ticket — three options, two new twists for 2026

EAV has modernised ticketing significantly. Three ways to pay, all valid:

  • Ticket machines and offices at every station: the most reliable. Machines at Napoli Garibaldi accept cards and cash, with menus in Italian, English, German, French and Spanish. Cost: €3.30 single Naples → Pompei Scavi. Children under 110 cm travel free; standard fare applies from 110 cm upwards.
  • GoEav app (iOS/Android): the official EAV app, rebranded in 2025. Buy a digital ticket in 30 seconds with Apple Pay / Google Pay / credit card. Account creation no longer requires an Italian tax code — foreign emails work since the May 2025 update. The QR code is scanned at the turnstile.
  • Tap&Go® contactless (NEW 2026): on enabled turnstiles at Garibaldi, Porta Nolana, Sorrento, Ercolano Scavi, Pompei Scavi, Castellammare and a handful of others, you tap a contactless credit card (Visa, Mastercard, Amex), Apple Pay or Google Pay directly at the gate. Fare is calculated automatically based on tap-in / tap-out stations. Same €3.30 price, no app needed. This is the fastest path if you have a contactless card.

Validation: the one rule that costs €50 if you forget

Paper magnetic-stripe tickets bought at the machine or tabacchi must be inserted into the yellow validation boxes on the platform before you board. An unvalidated ticket triggers a €50 on-train fine regardless of whether you paid. GoEav app tickets validate automatically when you press “activate” in the app. Tap&Go logs the tap as validation by definition.

From Naples Capodichino airport to Pompei Scavi

The Circumvesuviana does not serve the airport directly — you need a two-step journey. The total airport → Pompei time is 70–90 minutes depending on which leg you optimise:

  1. Airport to Napoli Garibaldi (the Circumvesuviana hub):
    • Alibus — €5, 15-25 min depending on traffic. Departs every 15-20 minutes from Terminal 1 arrivals (look for the blue ANM bus). Drops you at Napoli Centrale; the Circumvesuviana entrance is 50 m away on the underground level, signposted “Circumvesuviana / Linea Sorrento”.
    • Taxi — €23 fixed fare (tariffa predeterminata), 10-15 min. Make sure the driver applies the fixed fare and not the meter; show them the printed leaflet at arrivals if needed.
    • Avoid the metro Line 1 for now — the airport extension is still under construction (estimated 2027).
  2. Napoli Garibaldi to Pompei Scavi — 33-37 minutes on a Direttissimo, 30-32 minutes on a Campania Express. €3.30 standard ticket.

Budget a 2-hour window between landing and reaching the Pompeii ticket gate. The single longest delay is usually the Alibus queue at peak arrivals (8-10 am, 5-7 pm) — taxi shaves 15-20 minutes off that.

Boarding at Napoli Garibaldi — the platform-3 rule

The Circumvesuviana hub at Garibaldi is on the underground level of Napoli Centrale, signposted from the main concourse. It’s a busy, slightly utilitarian commuter station — expect limited English signage and bag-toting commuters at peak hours. Three rules to make the boarding painless:

Getting there

Book a private transfer to Sorrento

Private car · Fixed price · Door-to-door

All routes to Sorrento →
  1. Sorrento-bound trains almost always depart from platform 3. There’s no escalator or elevator to the underground platforms — just stairs. If you have two large suitcases, the trip is genuinely awkward. Plan accordingly: travel light or take a transfer.
  2. Read the display board before going down to the platform. Trains marked “Sorrento” are correct for Pompei Scavi. Trains marked “Sarno”, “Poggiomarino” or “Torre Annunziata” are different lines that do not stop at Pompei Scavi. This confusion accounts for most missed connections.
  3. Board the front carriages for marginally more space. They fill last and have slightly wider doorways for a rolling suitcase. If you’re only doing 35 minutes to Pompei, standing is survivable — but a seat is nicer, especially southbound in summer.

The 35-minute journey — landmarks from the window

From Napoli Garibaldi the train climbs east through the suburbs, then bends south toward Vesuvius. Stops worth a glance:

  • San Giorgio a Cremano (stop 5) — eastern Naples residential edge.
  • Ercolano Scavi (stop 13) — the Herculaneum archaeological site. A five-minute walk straight downhill from the station takes you to the entrance. A common “combo” day: morning at Herculaneum (less crowded, more intact than Pompeii), afternoon at Pompeii Scavi.
  • Torre del Greco (stop 16) — the train briefly skirts the Bay of Naples on the right; on a clear day you see Capri and the Sorrento peninsula across the water.
  • Torre Annunziata–Oplonti (stop 19) — the Villa di Poppea Roman villa is 600 m from this stop, often overlooked by Pompeii visitors despite being part of the same UNESCO site.
  • Villa Regina (stop 21) — a small rustic villa, last stop before Pompei Scavi.
  • Pompei Scavi–Villa dei Misteri (stop 22) — your stop. The platform sign is blue-and-white, clearly visible from the carriage. From the station forecourt the Porta Marina ruins entrance is straight across the road.

Arriving at Pompei Scavi — Villa dei Misteri

The station is small. Single line, two platforms (boards facing both directions), one ground-level exit. Amenities are basic but functional: a bar/café next to the ticket office, public restrooms (€1 coin), an information desk that’s usually staffed 09:00–18:00 in season, and a small luggage-storage counter (€5 per piece per day) for travellers who want to do the ruins without dragging suitcases.

Walk out of the station and turn right onto Via Villa dei Misteri. The Porta Marina entrance to the Pompeii archaeological park is 50 metres ahead — you can’t miss it; it’s where everyone is heading. Buy your park ticket online in advance via pompeiisites.org (€22 full / €2 EU 18–25 / €5 reduced) to skip the often-long ticket queue. The park is open 09:00–19:00 in summer (last entry 17:30), 09:00–17:00 in winter (last entry 15:30).

Around the Pompei Scavi station

Pompei Scavi–Villa dei Misteri is the dedicated stop for the Pompeii archaeological park — the gate is 50 metres from the station, the busiest tourist access to the ruins. The town centre of modern Pompei (Santuario della Madonna del Rosario) is a separate stop further along the line. Don’t confuse the two — most tour operators meet at the Scavi station.

For food and rest stops in the immediate radius:

  • Bar/Trattoria del Suburbio (200 m from station) — classic post-ruins lunch, decent pasta, fair prices.
  • President Restaurant (Piazza Schettino, 700 m) — the historic Michelin-recommended spot in the modern town.
  • Hotel Vittoria (300 m from station) — if you want to stay overnight close to the ruins for a 9 am opening sprint.

The modern Pompei town centre with the Santuario della Madonna del Rosario is 1.5 km from the Scavi station — a 20-minute downhill walk or a €5 taxi if you want to see the modern shrine after the ruins.

The Campania Express alternative

If you’re visiting Pompei in season (mid-March to mid-October) and value comfort, consider the Campania Express. It’s a tourist-focused service run by EAV on the same tracks, with four daily departures in each direction, calling only at the high-traffic stops: Napoli, Ercolano Scavi, Torre Annunziata, Pompei Scavi, Castellammare, Vico Equense and Sorrento.

  • Reserved seating — no standing.
  • Dedicated luggage racks — large suitcases welcome.
  • Air conditioning guaranteed, modern rolling stock.
  • Supplement of €15 on top of the standard €3.30 fare — so €18.30 total Naples → Pompei. Buy online at eavsrl.it, the GoEav app, or at the Garibaldi ticket office.

For a family of four with luggage in July, the Campania Express is a genuine upgrade. For a solo traveller in October, the standard Direttissimo is the rational pick.

Practical tips at Pompei Scavi

  • Time your visit: the ruins are crushingly hot 12:00–15:00 in July–August. Plan to arrive at the 09:00 opening or after 16:00 for the cooler hours, bring a hat, refill the official water fountains inside the park (they exist).
  • Luggage: the train’s aisle racks are minimal. If you’re overnighting in Sorrento and stopping at Pompei en route, use the station’s luggage counter (€5 per piece) rather than hauling bags around the ruins.
  • Peak hours: 07:30–09:00 and 17:30–19:00 weekdays are commuter rush hours; the trains are packed.
  • Pickpocketing: isolated but real on the first few stops out of Garibaldi. Keep your bag on your lap, not between your feet. The risk drops to near-zero after Torre del Greco.
  • Strikes: EAV publishes a list of treni garantiti (guaranteed services) on strike days — typically the early-morning and late-afternoon services. Check eavsrl.it the day before travelling if a strike has been announced.
  • Last trains: southbound from Napoli Garibaldi the last useful train is 22:14 arriving Pompei Scavi 22:44. Northbound from Sorrento the last train through Pompei is 21:29 → Naples 22:05. After that you’re looking at a taxi or a private transfer.

When the train isn’t the right call

The Circumvesuviana is the best Naples → Pompei option for solo travellers, couples with cabin luggage, and anyone prioritising cost over comfort. Take a private transfer instead if:

  • You land at Naples Airport after 21:00 — the train’s last useful southbound departure is 22:14 from Garibaldi.
  • You’re travelling with two or more large suitcases — the Garibaldi platforms are stair-only access.
  • You’re a group of four — a private transfer at €85–120 lands you door-to-door at the Porta Marina gate and works out cheaper than four Campania Express tickets.
  • You have a tight cruise-ship turnaround at Naples port — a transfer can wait, the train cannot.

Pompei vs the alternatives — direct comparison

Option Cost Time Best for
Circumvesuviana (DD) €3.30 35 min from Garibaldi Solo/couple, light luggage
Campania Express €18.30 30-32 min Family with luggage, comfort priority
Trenitalia regional €2.80 25 min to Pompei Santuario Locals; wrong stop for ruins (1.7 km walk)
Private transfer €85 sedan / €120 minivan 30 min door-to-door Group of 4+, luggage, late arrivals
SITA bus + walk €2.20 ~70 min via Stazione Marittima Almost never the right choice
Organised tour (skip-the-line) €55-95 pp half-day with transport First-timers wanting a guide

Plan your Pompei day

See the end-to-end Naples → Sorrento Circumvesuviana guide if Pompei is one stop in a longer trip, the full transfer comparison if you’re weighing options, or book a private transfer straight to the Porta Marina gate if comfort matters more than cost.

Frequently asked questions

Which Circumvesuviana stop is closest to the Pompeii ruins?+
Pompei Scavi–Villa dei Misteri — the Porta Marina ruins entrance is 50 metres from the platform. Do NOT get off at Pompei Santuario; that's a different station on the FS Trenitalia line, 1.7 km from the side entrance of the ruins.
How long does the Circumvesuviana take from Naples to Pompei?+
About 35 minutes from Napoli Garibaldi to Pompei Scavi on a Direttissimo (33-37 min depending on the run). The Campania Express does it in 30-32 minutes. Source: EAV official L1 timetable in force since 28 March 2026.
How much does the train from Naples to Pompei cost in 2026?+
€3.30 for a standard single ticket. The Campania Express is €18.30 (€3.30 fare + €15 supplement). Children under 110 cm travel free; standard fare applies from 110 cm upwards.
Can I pay with a contactless card on the Circumvesuviana?+
Yes — Tap&Go® rolled out in 2026 on enabled turnstiles at Napoli Garibaldi, Porta Nolana, Pompei Scavi, Sorrento, Ercolano Scavi, Castellammare and a few others. Tap a contactless Visa/Mastercard/Amex, Apple Pay or Google Pay at the gate; fare calculated from tap-in to tap-out, no app needed.
Do I need to validate a paper ticket before boarding?+
Yes — paper magnetic-stripe tickets must be inserted into the yellow validation machines on the platform before boarding. Failing to validate triggers a €50 on-train fine regardless of whether you paid. GoEav app tickets and Tap&Go are auto-validated.
Which platform do Sorrento-line trains leave from at Napoli Garibaldi?+
Sorrento-bound Circumvesuviana trains almost always depart from platform 3, on the underground level of Napoli Centrale. There is no elevator or escalator to the platforms — stairs only. Watch the display board: trains marked "Sorrento" stop at Pompei Scavi; trains marked "Sarno", "Poggiomarino" or "Torre Annunziata" do NOT.
Can I leave my luggage at the Pompei Scavi station?+
Yes — a small luggage-storage counter operates next to the ticket office at Pompei Scavi station, €5 per piece per day. Useful if you're continuing to Sorrento after visiting the ruins.
What is the Campania Express and is it worth the supplement?+
A tourist-focused EAV service on the same tracks: reserved seating, dedicated luggage racks, guaranteed air conditioning, four daily departures per direction. €15 supplement on top of the standard ticket (so €18.30 Naples → Pompei). Worth it for families with luggage in peak summer; standard Direttissimo is fine for solo/couple in shoulder season.
When is the last train back from Pompei to Naples?+
Northbound from Pompei Scavi the last train to Napoli Garibaldi departs at 22:05 (arriving Garibaldi 22:35). After that, your only options are a taxi (€60-80) or a pre-booked private transfer.
Can I take the Circumvesuviana directly from Naples Capodichino airport?+
No — the Circumvesuviana does not stop at the airport (the metro extension is still under construction, estimated 2027). Take the Alibus (€5, 15-25 min) or a fixed-fare taxi (€23) to Napoli Garibaldi first, then board the Circumvesuviana to Pompei Scavi. Total airport → Pompei time: 70-90 minutes.
Is the Circumvesuviana safe with luggage and a stroller?+
It works for one or two cabin-sized suitcases and a compact stroller, with patience. Two or more large suitcases plus stroller is genuinely awkward — aisle racks are minimal, doorways are narrow, and Napoli Garibaldi is stair-only access to the platform. For that profile, a private transfer is significantly more comfortable.
Where do I buy the Pompeii archaeological park entry ticket?+
Buy online in advance at pompeiisites.org (the official site): €22 full / €5 reduced / €2 EU 18-25. Online tickets skip the on-site queue, which can be 30-60 minutes in peak season. Tickets are NOT bundled with the train — you buy train and park tickets separately.
