Quick answer — Sicily in October
- You can still swim — for about two weeks. The sea off Palermo averages 23.5 °C across October, falling from roughly 25.0 °C on the 1st to roughly 22.2 °C on the 31st
- Days are warm, nights are not. Catania averages 24.9 °C by day and 13.9 °C at night; Palermo 23.5 °C and 16.7 °C
- Rain is real but not constant. Palermo averages 105.6 mm over 8.2 rainy days — which leaves about 23 dry days. Catania gets 62.7 mm over 5.4 days
- Half the visitors, not half the island. Accommodation nights fall 49.9% from August to October, but airport passengers fall only 11.1%
- Two dates decide your logistics: 1 October, when island ferry fares and timetables change, and 25 October, when the airline winter schedule starts

October across Sicily, in numbers
Sicily is not one climate. The Tyrrhenian coast at Palermo, the Ionian coast at Catania and the south coast at Agrigento behave differently in October, and the gap is wide enough to decide where you sleep. These are the only three Sicilian stations for which the WMO publishes normals.

That table makes the first decision for you: Catania is warmer by day and markedly drier than Palermo, and its nights are about 2.8 °C cooler. Agrigento is drier still, with mild nights. If rain worries you, go east and south; if cold evenings worry you, the Tyrrhenian coast is kinder.
The sea: warm for two weeks, then a decision
Averaged over the month the sea is 23.5 °C off Palermo and Catania and 23.6 °C off Taormina and Giardini Naxos, the warmest of the four points we measured. That number hides the story: October is when the Mediterranean gives up its summer.

Translated into a plan: if swimming is the point of the trip, go in the first half of October. The water on 1 October, at roughly 25.0 °C off Palermo, is still full swimming temperature. The water on 31 October is water you get into deliberately, briefly, then reach for a towel — not unpleasant, simply not a beach holiday.
One thing we cannot tell you honestly: which beach clubs still have decks and bars standing. There is no official register of seasonal closures in Sicily, and no ordinance we could read setting a date to dismantle beach structures. Plan for a free beach with no services; treat an open lido as a bonus.
How much it really rains, and why the east is a different island
October is when the Sicilian autumn starts, and the numbers are blunt. Palermo goes from 65.3 mm over 5.4 rainy days in September to 105.6 mm over 8.2 days in October, then 117.5 mm over 10.4 days in November. Against July's 6.7 mm over 1.2 days, October rainfall in Palermo is roughly sixteen times higher.
Read the other half: 8.2 rainy days leaves about 23 dry ones. Sicilian October rain arrives as heavy short episodes, not drizzle, and the day after is usually clear.
On the Ionian side the picture barely moves: Catania averages 62.7 mm over 5.4 days in October against 66.0 mm over 5.9 days in November, so on that coast October is not a rain peak at all. Agrigento is the driest of the three stations at 52.5 mm over 5.0 days. If your itinerary is Siracusa, Noto and the Baroque southeast, you are planning around a much smaller problem than Palermo's.

The uncomfortable part: half the beds does not mean half the queues
The usual promise about October in Sicily is an empty island. The official numbers say something more awkward.
On the demand side the collapse is genuine: nights spent in Sicilian tourist accommodation fell from 4,208,519 in August 2025 to 2,109,463 in October 2025, down 49.9%. The year before, the same — 3,136,445 against 1,554,030, down 50.4%.
On the transport side, almost nothing happens. Sicily's four airports handled 2,171,799 passengers in October 2025 against 2,443,118 in August 2025 — only 11.1% fewer. Catania alone was down 9.0%, Palermo 12.6%, Trapani 11.6%. Nine in ten August travellers still land in Sicily in October. They stay fewer nights, but arrivals halls, hire-car desks and the road up to Taormina do not empty the way the accommodation figures suggest.
One real exception: Comiso, Sicily's fourth airport, handled 4,990 passengers in October 2025 against 18,283 in August — a 72.7% collapse. It hibernates outside summer, which matters if you meant to fly into the Ragusa area.
And a corrective the other way: October is still 9.0% of Sicily's annual accommodation nights and 2.8 times busier than November. You are not travelling out of season, you are travelling at the end of one.

What ends on 30 September, before you even arrive
Sicily does not wind down gradually. A cluster of things stops on the last day of September, which is why the first week of October feels abruptly different from the week before it.
- The Cous Cous Fest at San Vito Lo Capo, Sicily's largest food festival, runs 18–27 September 2026 in its 29th edition. If that is why you were coming, you need September — see the Palermo Airport to San Vito Lo Capo transfer.
- The evening opening of the Villa Romana del Casale at Piazza Armerina, 20:00–22:30 for EUR 7.00, runs only from 10 May to 14 September 2026. The mosaics by night are a September experience.
- The summer Aeolian ferry timetable from Caronte & Tourist / Siremar is valid only 1 June to 30 September 2026.
- Reinforced local buses. Etna Trasporti's Hybus Verde and Hybus Rossa in Ragusa run only 1 April to 30 September 2026. Operators step down before October begins, not during it.
The one confirmed large October food event is the 35th Sagra del Pistacchio di Bronte on Etna's western flank, over two weekends: 25–27 September and 2–4 October 2026. Beyond that, the Regione Siciliana's own portal listed no October 2026 sagre when we checked. The year-long draw is Gibellina, in the Belice valley, Italian Capital of Contemporary Art for 2026, programming from 15 January to 31 December.

Ferries and hydrofoils: 1 October changes the fare and the timetable
If the Aeolian, Egadi or Pelagie islands are in your plan, October is a different operating regime, and it starts on day one. Low season on the Siremar / Caronte & Tourist minor-islands ferries runs 1 October to 31 May, high season 1 June to 30 September: 1 October is the first day of cheaper fares.

Now the part that costs people their connection: the October timetables were not published when we checked. On 13 August 2026 Liberty Lines had online only summer hydrofoil timetables — Aeolian Islands from 8 June, Egadi, Pelagie, Ustica and the Strait of Messina from 1 June — with no end date and no winter timetable at all. The one exception is Pantelleria, valid 1 June to 31 October 2026. A standing notice also says the modified Messina–Aeolian times apply "until 30/09/2026", so that service changes from 1 October. Do not book a flight around a hydrofoil time you read in the summer: reopen the operator's page before you travel, and build the trip so a missed island connection does not also cost you the flight home.
The second risk is the sea. Liberty Lines publishes a daily list of suspended sailings, and in late July 2026 alone — the calmest part of the year — notices went out on the 25th, 26th, 27th and 28th, covering Marettimo, Levanzo, Filicudi, Ustica, Lampedusa and Linosa. If hydrofoils are cancelled for sea state in July, they will be cancelled more often in October. Treat a night on Marettimo or Alicudi as a plan needing a spare day.

Etna in October: the rules are stricter than the weather
Etna is why many people choose October: clear air, no heat, snow not yet in the way. What stops them is not the season but the access rules.
Under the Belpasso mayoral ordinance no. 135 of 10 August 2026, in force indefinitely, the summit zone may be entered only with licensed Alpine or Volcanological guides. That zone is roughly everything above 2,500 m on the southern, western and northern flanks, plus the upper Valle del Bove above 1,700 m, and mountain clothing and an approved protective helmet are compulsory. The numbers are capped too: 10 hikers per guide, groups starting at 15-minute intervals, no more than 300 hikers a day through the Zona a Pericolosità Permanente, and nobody within 300 metres of the base of the Southeast Crater cone or 50 metres of an active lava flow.
A structural warning: Etna access rules are set municipality by municipality — Adrano, Belpasso, Biancavilla, Bronte, Linguaglossa, Maletto, Nicolosi, Ragalna, Randazzo, Sant'Alfio and Zafferana Etnea each issue their own ordinances, reissued as risk changes. Check the one for the flank you are climbing.
Below the summit zone the Funivia dell'Etna cable car runs daily 08:30 to 16:45, last descent 17:15, "weather and technical conditions permitting" — a qualifier that means more in October than in July. The 2500 m ticket costs EUR 54.00.
The other trap is the railway. The Ferrovia Circumetnea narrow-gauge line does not run at all on Sundays or public holidays, and its bus lines are suspended on those days too; the timetable in force is dated 16 March 2026. A Sunday circuit of the volcano by train does not exist. Archaeological sites: what keeps full hours, and what loses an hour
This is where October is genuinely, measurably better — with caveats.
The Valle dei Templi at Agrigento is open every day of the year, 08:30 to 20:00, last admission an hour before, and its hours do not shrink in October. Walking that ridge at 09:00 at 22.9 °C rather than in August heat, with a fraction of the coach traffic, is the strongest argument for the month — see the Palermo to Agrigento transfer.
Inside the park, the FAI-run Giardino della Kolymbethra opens 10:00–18:00 in October, last admission 17:30, against 10:00–19:00 in July, August and September — one hour less at the end of the day, enough to ruin a late-afternoon plan built on summer hours.
At Piazza Armerina the Villa Romana del Casale is open daily 09:00–19:00, last admission 18:00. Admission is EUR 14.00 full price, payable by everyone over 25 including over-65s, EUR 7.00 for 18–24 year olds, free for under-18s, and free on the first Sunday of every month with no booking — a very good day to be there in October. Getting across the interior: Agrigento to Piazza Armerina, then Agrigento to Noto or Agrigento to Ragusa for the Baroque southeast.
The caveat is Taormina. The Parco Archeologico Naxos Taormina publishes hours one month at a time and says explicitly that they change "in relation to the time of sunset." In August 2026 the Teatro Antico and the Naxos park opened 09:00–19:45, last admission 19:00; on 13 August 2026 no October hours had been published. Same for Morgantina and the Aidone museum.
Why "check before you assume open" is not a formality here: Isola Bella at Taormina was wrecked by cyclone Harry on 19–20 January 2026, the storm surge destroying the electricity, water and sewage ducts under the isthmus. It reopened only on 20 June 2026, five months later.
The Scala dei Turchi at Realmonte is open in 2026. The municipality closed it 11:00–18:00 on heatwave days in July 2026 — the 18th, 19th and 22nd — a summer problem that does not arise in October. What we could not verify is whether the free booked-access system still applies, or what October hours and capacity limits are in force: check the Comune di Realmonte notices.

25 October: the day the flight map is redrawn
One date changes more October plans than the weather. The IATA Winter 2026/27 airline season begins on 25 October 2026 — the day schedules to and from Sicilian airports are rebuilt and summer-only routes vanish.
If your trip straddles it, the outbound flight you find may have no matching return the following week, because the return falls in a different season — and connections, first and last departures and the airport bus timetables hanging off them can all shift on the same weekend. A trip from 20 to 28 October is not one schedule, it is two.

Getting around: October is when the timetables go dark
We move people around this island for a living, and the message is uncomfortable: October is the worst month of the year for relying on published Sicilian transport information. Not because services are bad, but because the summer documents expire and the winter ones are not out yet.
On 13 August 2026 the Aeolian ferry timetable ran out on 30 September with no replacement online, Liberty Lines had no winter hydrofoil timetable, and Interbus, Etna Trasporti, AST and SAIS served their timetables dynamically with no autumn notice. We went looking for the switch dates; they are not published.
In practice:
- Rail is the network we could not check. The Trenitalia and RFI works pages would not open for us on 13 August 2026, so we cannot tell you which Sicilian lines are running in October and which are suspended or on replacement buses. Ask the operator before you build a day around a train.
- Do not build a tight day around one rural bus. A missed connection in the interior can mean the next one is tomorrow.
- Sunday is a real constraint — the Circumetnea does not run on Sundays or public holidays.
- Comiso is not a viable arrival airport in October at 4,990 passengers for the month. Fly to Catania or Palermo.
If you are hopping between towns — the airport road to Cefalù, Catania Airport to Siracusa, the long run down to Marzamemi — October is where fixing transfers in advance stops being a comfort choice and becomes a scheduling one.
What actually costs less, and what we will not pretend to know
This is where most October guides invent a percentage. We are not going to.
Documented: ferry fares to the minor islands fall on 1 October, by the amounts in the table above — roughly 5% to 12% on the three Milazzo routes. The fares are published by the operator; the percentages are our arithmetic on them.
Inferred but solid: with accommodation nights down 49.9% against August while nine in ten August air passengers still arrive, demand for beds falls far faster than the number of people on the island. That is the structural reason October accommodation is easier to get. But we found no official Sicilian hotel-industry source publishing a high-versus-low season rate differential, so we are not printing one. If a page tells you Sicilian hotels are "40% cheaper in October", ask where that number came from.
The biggest saving in October is not on the bill anyway. It is arriving at the Valle dei Templi at opening with the ridge largely to yourself, at 22.9 °C.
What to pack, honestly
The mistake is packing for one Sicily. The range in the first table is the packing list.
- Daytime is summer clothing, 22.9–24.9 °C across the island. Palermo's average maximum only drops to 19.0 °C in November, so October is the last shirtsleeve month on the Tyrrhenian coast.
- Evenings need a layer, Catania two. A 13.9 °C night after a 24.9 °C day is an eleven-degree swing; Palermo's nights hold at 16.7 °C.
- Rain gear, not a raincoat wardrobe — 8.2 rainy days in Palermo, 5.4 in Catania, 5.0 in Agrigento.
- Swimwear, especially for the first half — 24.5 °C off Palermo in the first ten days is not a compromise.
- Proper shoes if Etna is in the plan. The Belpasso summit ordinance makes mountain clothing and an approved protective helmet compulsory; ask your guide company whether a helmet is provided.
Where to base yourself in October
Two recommendations, based on the rainfall column rather than the scenery.
For the best odds on weather: base east and south. Catania for Etna and the Ionian coast, Siracusa and Noto for the Baroque southeast, Agrigento for the temples. That side averages roughly half Palermo's October rainfall, and the sea off Taormina and Giardini Naxos is the warmest we measured — see Catania Airport to Giardini Naxos.
Mildest evenings and city life: base in Palermo. Its nights are nearly three degrees warmer than Catania's, its October days still average 23.5 °C, and a wet day in a city with that many churches, markets and palaces is not a wasted day. Cefalù is the coastal base on the same side.
What we would not do is split the island in half for a week and cross it twice. The bus network is between timetables and Sicilian driving distances are longer than the map suggests. Pick a side.
What to check the week before you travel
Everything here was verified on 13 August 2026. Check four things:
- October hours for the Teatro Antico di Taormina and the Naxos park, published one month at a time and tied to sunset.
- Winter hydrofoil and ferry timetables for your island: the summer documents expire on 30 September.
- The mayoral ordinance for the flank of Etna you plan to climb, and the Comune di Realmonte notices if the Scala dei Turchi is in the plan.
- Whether your dates straddle 25 October, when the airline winter schedule starts.
Moving around Sicily in the month the timetables change
Between the summer ferry timetables ending on 30 September and the airline winter season starting on 25 October, published Sicilian transport information is at its least reliable. A private transfer from Catania Airport or Palermo Airport puts a driver in arrivals with your name, tracks the flight if it is delayed, and runs at hours the buses do not. Fixed price per vehicle, confirmed at booking.
Plan the rest of the island
Start from Sicily, then pick a side: Palermo and Cefalù, or Catania, Taormina, Siracusa and Noto. For the roads between them: Catania Airport to Taormina, Palermo Airport to Cefalù, Palermo to Agrigento, Trapani Airport to Marsala and Agrigento to Erice.
