Why Sorrento for Your PADI Certification
The journey begins with Discover Scuba Diving (DSD) — a half-day introduction that requires no prior experience. After a theory briefing and a pool session at Marina Grande, your PADI instructor takes you into the open sea for a guided dive down to 12 metres. You will encounter octopus, colourful wrasse, sea stars and the rocky landscape of the Sorrento coast. The programme costs from €150 per person and is available daily from April to November. It is the perfect taster for anyone unsure about committing to a full course. Browse all our diving experiences.
Discover Scuba Diving
If that first dive leaves you wanting more — and it usually does — the PADI Scuba Diver certification is the next step. This two-day course covers three knowledge development sections, three confined-water sessions and two open-water dives. You will learn buoyancy control, mask clearing, regulator recovery and safe ascent procedures. Upon completion you are certified to dive to 12 metres under the supervision of a PADI professional. The course costs approximately €300 and all materials are included.
PADI Open Water Diver
For full autonomy underwater, the PADI Open Water Diver course is the global gold standard. Over three to four days you complete five knowledge modules (via PADI eLearning before you arrive, saving time on holiday), five pool sessions and four open-water dives at sites around Punta Campanella and Vervece. Maximum depth: 18 metres. You graduate as a certified diver recognised worldwide, free to dive with a buddy at any dive site on the planet. The course costs approximately €450 and includes all equipment, materials and certification fees.
About the Dive Center
Sorrento's PADI 5-Star centre has been operating since 1996 and holds a flawless safety record. Instructors hold a maximum ratio of 1:4 in open water, ensuring personalised attention. The centre uses well-maintained Aqualung and Mares equipment, and boats are purpose-built aluminium dive boats with ladders, freshwater showers and shaded seating. Everything is designed to make learning comfortable and stress-free.
Learning in the Mediterranean
Learning to dive in the Mediterranean has unique advantages. The water is warm enough (22–27 °C in summer) to learn in a thin wetsuit rather than a dry suit, visibility is excellent, currents are mild, and the marine life is diverse enough to keep you fascinated without being overwhelming. Compare this to cold-water certification courses in lakes or quarries and the choice is clear — if you are going to learn, learn here.
After Certification
Once certified, a whole world opens up. Join a guided dive at Punta Campanella the day after your course, explore the caves of Marina di Crapolla, or plan a dive trip to the Blue Grotto of Capri. Sorrento is also a gateway to the Amalfi Coast — between dives, take a boat trip to Positano, visit Ravello, or relax at one of our holiday apartments. Your diving certification is for life and recognised at every dive centre on earth.
