The Marine Protected Area
The waters off the Sorrento Peninsula have been a Marine Protected Area since 1997, and the results are visible the moment you descend. Posidonia meadows carpet the sandy bottom, colourful nudibranchs cling to rocky walls, and schools of barracuda and amberjack patrol the blue. Visibility regularly exceeds 25 metres between May and October, rivalling the best dive destinations in the Mediterranean. Browse all our water activities to find the dive experience that suits you.
Best Dive Sites
The crown jewel is Punta Campanella itself — a submerged promontory where the cliff face plunges to 40 metres and a Roman shrine to Athena lies beneath the surface. Experienced divers can explore the Vervece rock, a dramatic offshore pinnacle that rises from 30 metres and attracts grouper, moray eels and the occasional eagle ray. Closer to shore, the caves at Marina di Crapolla and Recommone offer spectacular swim-throughs with shafts of sunlight piercing the darkness.
For Beginners: Discover Scuba Diving
You do not need to be a certified diver to experience the underwater world here. Discover Scuba Diving programmes let complete beginners make their first open-water dive after a short pool session at Marina Grande. The maximum depth is 12 metres — more than enough to encounter octopus, sea stars and the ubiquitous ornate wrasse darting through the rocks. If you catch the diving bug, full PADI certification courses are available from Open Water to Advanced.
For Certified Divers
For certified divers, the local PADI 5-Star centres offer two-tank morning dives departing at 9:00 and returning by 12:30. Equipment rental is included — BCD, regulator, wetsuit, mask, fins and tank. All you need to bring is your certification card and a sense of adventure. Nitrox fills are available for those who want to extend their bottom time on deeper sites.
Dive Season & Conditions
The dive season runs from April to November, with peak conditions in June, July, September and October. Water temperature ranges from 18 °C in spring to 27 °C in late summer, and most divers are comfortable in a 5 mm wetsuit. August is warm but can bring jellyfish; early autumn offers the best combination of warm water, calm seas and fewer crowds.
Beyond the Diving
Beyond the diving itself, Sorrento is the perfect base for a multi-activity holiday. Spend your mornings underwater and your afternoons exploring the town's historic centre, sampling limoncello at a local distillery, or taking a boat trip along the Amalfi Coast. Need a place to stay? Holiday apartments in Sorrento put you minutes from the dive centre. For a day off from diving, try a snorkelling excursion to Punta Campanella.
