Dive Guide

Snorkelling in a Marine Protected Area

The Punta Campanella Marine Protected Area stretches from the tip of the Sorrento Peninsula to the Li Galli islands, protecting 40 kilometres of coastline and the rich marine ecosystem that thrives beneath the surface. Seagrass meadows shelter juvenile fish, rocky reefs are home to octopus and moray eels, and the clear water — with visibility often exceeding 20 metres — makes this an ideal spot for snorkelling without any prior experience. Explore all our water tours to find the right excursion.

Guided by Marine Biologists

Several of our snorkelling tours are led by marine biologists who explain the ecology of the Tyrrhenian Sea as you swim. Learn to identify Mediterranean parrotfish, bearded fireworms, sea cucumbers and the colourful nudibranchs that dot the rocks. These educational tours are especially popular with families and school groups, combining adventure with genuine learning. A marine biologist guide brings the underwater world to life in a way that a simple swim never could.

Best Snorkelling Sites

Punta Campanella's western face drops steeply into deep blue water, creating a dramatic wall snorkel where damselfish congregate in their thousands. Further east, the coves around Recommone and Marina di Crapolla feature shallow, sheltered waters with sandy patches — perfect for children and less confident swimmers. Near Positano, the Li Galli islands offer open-water snorkelling over a rocky seabed dense with sea fans and sponges. Book a private boat to reach these spots in comfort.

Family-Friendly Options

Families with young children will appreciate our dedicated family-friendly snorkelling trips. The boat anchors in shallow bays where the depth does not exceed 3 metres, lifejackets are provided for all ages, and the guide stays close to ensure everyone feels safe. Children as young as 5 can join — the only requirement is that they are comfortable in the water. Snorkelling is the perfect introduction to the marine world for kids who are not yet old enough to dive.

Sunset Snorkelling

For a truly memorable experience, book a sunset snorkelling excursion departing around 17:00 in summer. As the light turns golden, the underwater colours shift and the activity of marine life increases — octopus emerge from their lairs, moray eels peek from crevices, and schools of silverside fish shimmer in the fading light. The boat returns to port as the first stars appear over Capri. A glass of local white wine and a selection of bruschette are served on board.

What Marine Life to Expect

The waters along this coast support a surprising diversity of marine life for a popular tourist area. You may spot barracuda, amberjack, flying fish, seahorses, starfish, and — if you are lucky — a loggerhead sea turtle passing through on its migration route. The Marine Protected Area's no-take zones have allowed fish populations to recover significantly since 1997, making every snorkel here noticeably richer than unprotected stretches nearby. Need accommodation? Holiday homes in Positano or apartments in Sorrento are ideal bases.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How much does a snorkelling tour cost?

Group snorkelling tours start from around €45 per person for a half-day (3–4 hours). Private boat snorkelling charters for up to 8 people range from €350 to €600 depending on duration and itinerary. Sunset snorkelling trips are approximately €65 per person including aperitivo.

Do I need to be a strong swimmer?

No, you do not need to be a strong swimmer. Lifejackets and neoprene vests are provided for buoyancy. The guide stays with the group at all times. However, you should be comfortable in the water and able to float. Non-swimmers can stay on the boat and enjoy the scenery.

Are snorkelling tours suitable for families with children?

Absolutely. Children aged 5 and over are welcome on all our snorkelling tours. Family-friendly excursions anchor in shallow, sheltered bays. Child-sized masks, snorkels and lifejackets are provided. Children under 5 can join the boat trip but are not recommended for in-water snorkelling.

Is snorkelling equipment provided?

Yes, all tours include high-quality mask, snorkel, fins and a neoprene vest. If you prefer to use your own mask for comfort, you are welcome to bring it. Underwater cameras are available for rent on some tours.

What are the best snorkelling spots?

The top spots are Punta Campanella (dramatic wall and clear water), Recommone bay (shallow and sheltered), Marina di Crapolla (sea caves), the Li Galli islands near Positano (open water with sea fans), and the coves between Praiano and Amalfi. Your guide selects the best location based on conditions.

When is the best season for snorkelling?

The snorkelling season runs from May to October. June and September offer the best combination of warm water (23–26 °C), excellent visibility and fewer crowds. July and August are warmest but busier. Water is swimmable into late October in mild years.

Can I book a sunset snorkelling tour?

Yes, sunset snorkelling tours depart around 17:00 from June to September. The tour includes snorkelling at a sheltered cove, an aperitivo on board (wine, bruschette, fruit) and a cruise back to port under the stars. It is our most popular experience for couples.
