Sorrento sits on a cliff edge above the Bay of Naples with uninterrupted views of Vesuvius, Capri and the sea below. It is the most practical base on the Sorrentine Peninsula — a real town with year-round restaurants, frequent ferries to Capri and the Amalfi Coast, and a railway connection to Naples and Pompeii. BlueKeys offers hand-picked villas, apartments and holiday homes in Sorrento starting from €80 per night.

Sorrento is widely considered the best base for exploring both the Amalfi Coast and the Bay of Naples in a single trip. The town's ferry port (Marina Piccola) runs regular hydrofoils to Capri (20 minutes, €22) and fast boats along the Amalfi Coast. The Circumvesuviana railway connects Sorrento to Pompeii (30 minutes) and Naples (65 minutes), making day trips effortless. Browse all Sorrento stays to find properties near the ferry, the town centre or the quieter clifftop suburbs.
Clifftop villas and hotels in Sorrento offer some of the most dramatic views in Italy — the city and bay spread below, with the silhouette of Vesuvius on the horizon and Capri floating to the west. Villa rentals with private terraces typically range from €150 to €500 per night depending on size and season. Many include a lift to the beach via a private elevator cut into the cliff — a Sorrento speciality.
The historic centre of Sorrento (Piazza Tasso and the pedestrianised lanes around it) is the most convenient location for visitors who want everything on foot: restaurants, limoncello shops, the fish market and a lively evening passeggiata. Apartments here tend to be compact but well-equipped, with prices starting from €80 per night for a studio or one-bedroom.
Sant'Agnello and Meta di Sorrento are quieter residential areas immediately adjacent to Sorrento with slightly lower prices and a more local atmosphere. They are well-connected to the town by bus and on foot, and have excellent restaurants that cater more to residents than tourists. Many BlueKeys guests prefer these areas for longer stays, appreciating the calmer pace while still being minutes from the ferries.
If you are travelling with children, Sorrento is particularly family-friendly. The main beach area at Meta di Sorrento has shallow, calm water and flat access (a rarity on this coast). The town centre has multiple gelaterias, a dedicated children's park and wide pavements on the main shopping street. The ferry to Capri with children is an easy and hugely popular day trip — book group boat tours in advance for the best prices.
Sorrento's food scene is excellent and underrated. The town produces some of Italy's finest limoncello and mozzarella di bufala, and the restaurants around the fishing harbour of Marina Grande serve some of the freshest seafood on the peninsula. For a cooking class experience, BlueKeys offers classes at local homes where you learn to make pasta, gnocchi or pizza from scratch with local chefs — see our tours page for current availability.
Transport from Naples Airport to Sorrento is straightforward: a private transfer takes approximately 70–90 minutes and costs €110–€140 for up to 4 passengers. Alternatively, the Alibus from the airport to Naples Centrale station (15 minutes) connects with the Circumvesuviana railway to Sorrento (65 minutes). BlueKeys recommends the private transfer for families or on first visits — the railway option requires changing trains and managing luggage on crowded platforms.

FAQ
Sorrento is arguably the best base for a first trip to the region. It combines easy ferry access to Capri and the Amalfi Coast, a rail link to Pompeii and Naples, a real town atmosphere with year-round services, and accommodation that is generally 20–30% cheaper than equivalent properties in Positano. Most Amalfi Coast highlights can be reached from Sorrento by ferry in under 90 minutes.
Budget stays (studio apartments, B&Bs) start from €80/night. Mid-range apartments and villas with sea views or terraces range from €130–€280/night. Premium clifftop villas range from €280–€600/night in summer. Prices are significantly lower than Positano for comparable quality, making Sorrento the best value option on the peninsula.
The historic centre (Piazza Tasso area) is best for restaurant access and nightlife. The clifftop areas west of centre (Via Capo, Via Nastro Verde) offer the best sea views and villa-style accommodation. Sant'Agnello is quieter and 5–10% cheaper, ideal for families. Meta di Sorrento has the best beach access with flat terrain.
By private transfer: approximately 70–90 minutes (€110–€140 for 4 passengers). By public transport: Alibus to Naples Centrale (15 min) + Circumvesuviana train (65 min) = approximately 90–100 minutes total. We strongly recommend a private transfer for first-time visitors to avoid the complexity of connecting trains with luggage.
Sorrento is excellent from late April through October. May and September are particularly good — warm enough to swim, restaurant options are full, and prices are lower than peak. The town also has a lively shoulder season (April, October, November) unlike the smaller coastal villages. Christmas and Easter are popular with Italian visitors and worth considering for a cultural experience.
Capri (20-min hydrofoil from Marina Piccola), Pompeii (30-min train), Amalfi Coast villages by ferry (45–90 mins), Naples (65-min train), Herculaneum (50-min train). The most popular combination is a morning boat trip to Capri and an afternoon relaxing in Sorrento. BlueKeys offers [Capri boat tours](/capri-boat-tour-from-sorrento) and [Amalfi Coast tours](/tours-amalfi-coast) departing from Sorrento.
Yes, Sorrento is more car-friendly than the Amalfi Coast proper. Several paid car parks operate in and around the town centre, and many villas include private parking or have arrangements with nearby garages. If you are renting a car for the whole trip, Sorrento is a good base — but we strongly recommend leaving the car behind for Amalfi Coast day trips and using the ferries instead.
All our boats are fully licensed and insured. Skippers are local professionals with years of experience navigating the Amalfi Coast. Free cancellation up to 48 hours before departure.
