Pompeii Tours
Pompeii is one of the most visited UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the world — an entire Roman city frozen in time by the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. Walking its streets, entering its houses and reading its graffiti is an experience unlike any other. BlueKeys offers skip-the-line Pompeii tours from Sorrento and Naples, with expert guides ranging from €65 per person for small groups to fully private experiences at €150 per person.

Private Pompeii ExperienceAbout our boat tours
Skip-the-line access is essential at Pompeii. In peak season (July and August), general queues at the main entrance can stretch to two hours. Our Pompeii tours include pre-booked timed entry tickets — you walk straight to the fast-track lane and begin your visit immediately. All tours are capped at small group sizes (maximum 12 people) to allow close access to the ruins without the crowds of mass-market operators.
Private Pompeii tours offer the deepest experience of the site. Your archaeologist guide — all our guides hold a licensed guida turistica qualification — will lead you through the Forum, the Villa of the Mysteries, the Amphitheatre, the brothel (Lupanare) and the plaster casts of Pompeii's victims. They will explain the social structure of Roman Pompeii, the sequence of the eruption and the ongoing excavation work still revealing new discoveries. Browse private Pompeii experiences for availability and pricing.
For travellers on a tighter budget, our small-group Pompeii tours from Sorrento and Naples deliver outstanding value. A licensed guide covers all the major sites in a structured 2.5-hour walking tour. Round-trip transfers by air-conditioned minibus from Sorrento are available as an add-on, making this the simplest way to combine Pompeii with a Sorrento or Amalfi Coast holiday. Groups depart daily from both departure points.
Herculaneum (Ercolano) is Pompeii's smaller, better-preserved sister site and makes an excellent alternative or combination visit. While Pompeii covers a vast area and is partially unroofed, Herculaneum's buildings survive to their original second-storey height with intact wooden beams, mosaics and furniture. Our guides can run a combined Pompeii and Herculaneum full-day itinerary — contact us for a bespoke quote.
The best time to visit Pompeii is during the shoulder seasons: March to May and September to November. Summer heat in the ruins is intense — there is very limited shade and temperatures regularly exceed 35°C in July and August. If you visit in summer, choose an early morning departure (9:00 opening) and carry at least 1.5 litres of water per person. Closed-toe shoes are essential as the ancient cobblestones are uneven.
Combining a Pompeii tour with an Amalfi Coast boat trip makes for an unforgettable full day. We recommend a morning Pompeii visit (9:00–12:30) followed by an afternoon boat tour from Positano or a sunset cruise along the coast. Our team can coordinate both bookings and arrange shared transfers. This combination is one of our most-requested multi-experience packages.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
How much do Pompeii tours cost?
Small-group Pompeii tours from Sorrento start from €65 per person including skip-the-line tickets and a licensed guide. Private tours for 2–8 people range from €120 to €150 per person depending on group size and duration. Transfer from Sorrento is available as an add-on.
Do I really need a guide for Pompeii?
A guide is strongly recommended. Pompeii covers 66 hectares — it is easy to miss the most significant sites without direction, and many of the most interesting rooms (such as the Villa of the Mysteries) require context to fully appreciate. Our archaeologist guides bring the site alive in a way no audio guide can replicate.
How long does a Pompeii tour take?
A standard guided tour covers the main highlights in 2.5 to 3 hours. A comprehensive full-site tour with a private guide typically runs 3.5 to 4 hours. If you want to include the Pompeii Archaeological Museum in Naples, allow a full day.
What is skip-the-line at Pompeii?
Skip-the-line (also called timed entry or fast-track) means your tickets are pre-booked for a specific entry time. Instead of queuing at the ticket office — which can take 1–2 hours in peak season — you proceed directly to the reserved entry lane and enter within minutes of arrival.
Can I visit Pompeii from Sorrento?
Yes, Sorrento is the ideal base for a Pompeii visit. The Circumvesuviana train runs regularly between Sorrento and Pompeii station (journey time: approximately 30 minutes). BlueKeys also offers air-conditioned minibus transfers from Sorrento for small groups, which is more comfortable and punctual than the train.
What should I wear and bring to Pompeii?
Wear comfortable closed-toe shoes — the basalt cobblestones are uneven and slippery in places. Bring a hat, high-SPF sunscreen, at least 1.5 litres of water per person and a light jacket for spring or autumn visits. Bags larger than 30x30x15cm must be checked at the entrance cloakroom.
Is Pompeii suitable for children?
Yes, children find Pompeii genuinely fascinating — the plaster casts are particularly affecting. Our guides adapt their commentary for family groups. Note that some adult-content areas (Lupanare, some erotic frescoes) have restricted access for minors. The site is stroller-friendly on the main paved paths, though the uneven cobblestones require some manoeuvring.
