Castellammare di Stabia is the Gulf of Naples' best-kept secret for travellers who want authentic coastal Italy without Amalfi prices. Sitting at the base of Monte Faito and 15 minutes from Pompeii, the city combines real Neapolitan life, an excellent Circumvesuviana rail connection to everywhere you want to visit, and accommodation that costs 30–40% less than comparable stays in Sorrento or Positano. BlueKeys lists hand-picked apartments, B&Bs and holiday homes starting from €75 per night.

The strategic value of Castellammare is transport. The Circumvesuviana station is inside the town and runs trains every 20–30 minutes: Pompeii (9 minutes), Herculaneum (25 minutes), Sorrento (25 minutes), Naples Centrale (45 minutes). For a week-long itinerary covering Vesuvius, the archaeological sites, Sorrento, Capri and even day trips into Naples, Castellammare gives you more flexibility per euro than any other base in the region. Browse all available stays to filter by price, guests and proximity to the station.
Accommodation types range from modern apartments in the new town near the seafront (€70–€140/night) to B&Bs in restored historic buildings in the upper town (€60–€110/night), with a handful of larger villas on the slopes of Monte Faito for groups and families (€150–€300/night). Most properties offer free Wi-Fi, air conditioning and private parking — parking in particular is a major practical advantage over Sorrento, where street parking is virtually impossible. Many hosts also include a breakfast basket with local products on arrival.
What makes Castellammare special beyond logistics is the layered history. The archaeological park of Stabiae preserves two Roman villas — Villa Arianna and Villa San Marco — with frescoes and mosaics rivalling anything in Pompeii, but without the crowds. Entry is free. Monte Faito rises 1,100 metres directly behind the town and is reachable by cable car (closed November–March) for 360-degree views over the Gulf, the Sorrentine Peninsula and Capri. The medieval castle (Castello Angioino) marks the old harbour; below it, a working shipyard that has launched Italian naval vessels for two centuries continues to operate.
Day trips from Castellammare are remarkably convenient. Pompeii is a single stop on the train. Herculaneum is three stops. Sorrento is a 25-minute ride. The ferry terminal (Molo Borbonico) connects to Capri in 50 minutes by hydrofoil during the summer season — the quickest route to the island from anywhere on the mainland. For Amalfi Coast trips, a private transfer or the SITA bus from Meta di Sorrento reaches Positano in 50 minutes. Book a private transfer to Positano if you want door-to-door service.
Eating in Castellammare is genuinely local — none of the Amalfi Coast tourist menu inflation. Look for the city's signature cuisine: pizza stabiese (a thicker-crusted Neapolitan variant), fresh mozzarella di bufala from the surrounding plain, and the city's justly famous pastries (the babà and the sfogliatella stabiese). The Villa Comunale seafront promenade is where locals take the evening passeggiata; the bars and gelateria around it serve the whole town. For seafood, the restaurants near the fishing port at Marina del Cantiere source directly from that morning's catch.
Timing your stay: Castellammare has a real climate — hot and humid in July/August (peak tourist month), perfect in May/June and September/October. Unlike Positano, the town does not empty in winter — shops, restaurants and public transport all run year-round. Hotel prices rise roughly 20–30% in July and August versus shoulder season, well below the 50%+ peak-season premiums in Sorrento and Positano. Easter week and the first two weeks of August require booking 4–6 weeks ahead; other periods are usually available within 2 weeks.
BlueKeys properties are personally vetted against our 40-point quality standard. Every listing includes verified photos, accurate descriptions and direct-to-host contact. FAQ
Yes. Castellammare is a working Italian city rather than a resort town, with the same standards of safety as comparable provincial cities. The tourist areas — the seafront, the station area, Monte Faito cable car base, Stabiae archaeological park — are well-policed and busy. Use normal urban travel sense (watch for pickpocketing at the station, secure valuables in parked cars) and you will have no issues. Most BlueKeys hosts can arrange taxi pickup for late arrivals.
Accommodation in Castellammare averages 30–40% less than equivalent Sorrento stays. A modern one-bedroom apartment that costs €140–€180 per night in Sorrento typically costs €80–€110 in Castellammare. Restaurants are 20–30% cheaper, parking is free or €5/day (versus €20–€30/day in Sorrento), and supermarket prices are standard Italian — no tourist markups. The savings over a week-long family holiday typically reach €400–€700.
Yes, very easily. The Circumvesuviana rail line runs every 20–30 minutes. Pompeii is a single stop (9 minutes, €1.50). Sorrento is 25 minutes away (€3.20). Herculaneum is 25 minutes toward Naples. The station is central — most Castellammare stays are within a 10-minute walk. A reduced Campania Express tourist service also runs in summer with guaranteed seats.
Very good. The flat seafront promenade (Villa Comunale) is stroller-friendly, the town has a real beach at Pozzano and several public swimming pools, and the Monte Faito cable car is a highlight for children. Restaurants are relaxed and welcome children at any hour — no Sorrento-style tourist-menu pressure. Many BlueKeys apartments come with kitchens, making self-catering easy with young children. Winter visits are possible since the town does not shut down like resort villages.
For transport convenience, choose the area around the main Circumvesuviana station (Piazza Amedeo) — flat, walkable, close to shops. For sea views, look at properties along Via Acton or Via Bonito near the old port. The upper town (Quartiere Antico) has character B&Bs in historic buildings with cathedral views. Pozzano and Scanzano to the west have family apartments near the beach. Avoid the industrial area east of the shipyard.
Yes, and it is a notable foodie destination in its own right. Look for pizza stabiese (thicker crust than classic Napoletana), the babà stabiese pastry (widely considered the best version of this Neapolitan classic), fresh seafood at the Marina del Cantiere, and the local fior di latte mozzarella from surrounding farms. The weekly market (Wednesday mornings) sells produce from the Monti Lattari farming villages. Restaurant prices are typically half what you pay in Sorrento for equivalent quality.
Yes. Private transfer from Naples Capodichino Airport to Castellammare takes approximately 40–50 minutes via the A3 motorway and costs €108 for up to 3 passengers in a sedan (€132 for minivans up to 8 passengers). All transfers include meet-and-greet at arrivals with a name sign, free flight tracking, child seats on request and fixed pricing (20% night supplement between 8 PM and 8 AM).
